Maltese Cross – a flower?

Maltese Cross flower

The other day when I was experimenting with my new camera while out in the rain I discovered a perfect looking Maltese Cross bloom. I took several photographs of it, getting closer and closer as I did.

The cluster of flowers is actually only an inch or so in diameter so you can imagine just how close I was zooming in to get this close up.

Don’t the petals actually have a bit of a plasticized look to them?

The Maltese cross is a great plant to grow. It’s fairly hardy. I think it’s a zone 3 or 4 plant. The plant grows tall stalks that develop flower buds on their tips which develop into clusters of flowers as shown above. There’s often 20+ stalks at a time.

My Maltese Cross plants bloom at least twice a year. Usually in late June to early July and then I cut down the stalks when the flowers are finished. The plant then blooms once more in late August or early September. The flowers tend to last for about two weeks at a time.

Passion Flower

I’m sorry that this Green Thumb Sunday post is late. I’ve had a busy weekend and wasn’t able to make my post on early Sunday morning as I normally do.

This photo of a passion flower was taken earlier this week. I took the photo with my new Digital SLR camera. Doesn’t it take a great photo?

I’ve gone nuts over vines this year. A couple of weeks ago I bought two more clematis vines, three different passion flower vines and a tropical vine that I can’t find the name of yet.

This passion flower has a faint scent. You can’t smell it until you actually put your nose to it though. It smells lemony. It’s a lovely fresh scent.

Do you enjoy passion flower vines too?

The Baronne is blooming

cluster Barone Prevost

Baronne Prevost is an antique rose with an amazingly strong fragrance. I seem to be on an antique rose kick today because I also posted another antique rose photo on my gardening blog today.

This rose is very hardy. It had very little die back over the winter and I didn’t give it any kind of winter protection this year either! It’s grown quite tall. It’s approximately 7 feet tall. The only complaints that I might have about it is that it has weak stems and as a result is a somewhat floppy rose. It’s also very prickly! It has both thorns and tiny fine prickles. Both of which makes working with the rose kind of dangerous to your skin!

I have Baronne Prevost growing on one side of my garden opposite another antique rose called Compte De Chambord. Both are extremely fragrant and tend to bloom at the same time so standing in the middle of the garden between these two roses when they are blooming is pure heaven.

Octavia Hill Rose

My roses are blooming. All of them are blooming! Come visit my backyard and smell their sweet perfume. It’s heavenly.

Three of my rose bushes are taller than I am and they are just covered with scented spring buds and blooms. It’s gorgeous! There’s white ones, pale yellow ones, rich yellow ones, pink ones, pink ones, pink ones, and red ones!

I went out and finally did some work in my garden yesterday. My back is now aching! It as nice to be surrounded by such beauty and scent. My lavender is just about ready to bloom too and I was working with it to straighten it out and the scent of lavender mingled with the beautiful rose scents. Ahhhhh! I must bottle that scent for winter!

The photo above is not this years. I did take some photos while I was out but I haven’t transfered them to my computer yet. Just wait until you see them!

Sadly I lost some roses this winter. You can find out which ones on As the Garden Grows.

New Hosta Leaves

I don’t think there’s anything prettier than the greens of spring. The vibrant colors of new leaves as they grow are just beautiful to me.

This is a photo of new Hosta leaves. I took the photo just after it had rained which of course is why they are covered in water droplets. I actually have an even pretty picture of the hosta leaves on my photo blog Breath of Life if you’d care to take a look at it. I’m actually quite happy with the way both photos turned out.

As you’ve probably noticed I love taking photos of flowers. I think this year I’m going to try to capture the beauty of foliage a little more often than I’ve tried in the past.

Don’t forget to check out the Chive blooms on As the Garden Grows too!

I’m way behind in posting my Green Thumb Sunday post. I thought that I’d be creating a number of posts on Sunday and didn’t want my GTS post to get buried to fast. I might as well have posted this early Sunday morning because I didn’t get around to doing all the posts that I knew were coming until late Sunday evening. Next time!

I hope to get around to all the GTS sites through the week. I will try. I promise!
