Wondering when the axe will fall

February 22, 2008 by Tricia

I was just talking about how much I’d like to get back to work, but I’ve been on medical leave for 25 months now. It’s hard to imagine that I’ve been off for so long!

Almost every day I wonder when the phone will ring and on the other end it will be the oc health department at the hospital calling to tell me that they can’t extend my medical leave any longer. If that happens I’ll be very upset.

Since I’m officially on medical leave I still have my full time position. It’s being held for me. I also have health benefits. I do have to pay a certain amount each year – money that would normally be taken from my paychecks, but I’m still covered.

If I ever do get that call I’ll have to switch over to a private family or individual health insurance plan. Actually, Chris works at the hospital. He’s only part time (but works almost full time hours). I think he can apply for health coverage. I should get him to check on that and we could switch over. Then if the axe does fall we’ll at least still have continued health insurance coverage.

Do you have health insurance from your workplace?

Too cold for outdoor activity

February 22, 2008 by Tricia

Well so much for my attempt at weight loss. I made quite a bit of progress in the first month that we had our puppy but since then I’ve either been feeling so sick or it’s been so cold outside (or both) that I haven’t been as active. So my progress has slowed.

What a vicious cycle. I’m sick and in pain so I’m not all that active which caused me to gain a bit of weight (my medications have as well (steroids)) and then when I want to get more active I can’t – again because of the pain. Arghhh!

I hope the weather starts to get better soon. It’s too easy to make the excuse that I’m not going to walk the dog because it’s -20 or even -30 Celsius (-22 F) outside (that’s darn cold!). Of course I’m not just making the excuse because I don’t want to go. Even the puppy doesn’t want to walk very far when it’s that cold out either!

Only a month or so ’till Spring and nicer weather. I can’t wait.

Wordless Wednesday

Aw … the deer want in!

If it keeps snowing here the way it has we’ll probably start to see deer wandering around! Honestly. We’re in the process of getting about 30 more centimeters of snow here in Toronto and those of us with small lawns literally have no place left to put the snow. We might also have an ice storm too. Oh goody.

I posted this photo of the snow almost as high as our car last week on one of my other blogs after last weeks snow storm and now the snow is piled higher than our car. I really can’t lift the snow much higher and when I do try it just starts to slide off. This is getting crazy! Apparently we’ve already reached or passed the February record for snow at our airport and we aren’t even half way through the month! This is certainly a snow year around here!

I wonder if any market research studies have been done about how this much snow affects people and their shopping habits! I’m sure a lot of shovels and snow blowers were purchased here in Toronto this month.

I’ll have to try to take a photo of our puppy trying to climb up the mound of snow on our lawn. She sinks into it right up to her neck. Still … she insists on climbing it so that she can do her business. It’s pretty funny. If you’ve been wondering where I’ve been the last couple of days I’ve either been hiding indoors since it’s been getting to -30 Celsius (-22 F) with the windchill – and when you’ve got a constant fever that’s really not much fun, or else I’ve been outside shoveling!

Feverish

February 6, 2008 by Tricia

I can’t believe I haven’t posted anything here for a few days!

Well I have a good excuse. I’ve been sick again. What else is new eh? I’ve had a constant fever from sometime Saturday evening up until sometime earlier today.

It’s not unusual for me to have several fevers in a day or even several fevers each day for days on end. It just goes with my Crohn’s disease. In fact it’s so common that’s why I came up with the name Feverish Thoughts for this sites domain.

It’s been a while though since I’ve pretty much had a constant fever for days on end!

I don’t know how you feel when you have a fever … I’ll bet you probably have other symptoms going on when you get one … but for me, a fever just zaps all my energy. I’m shivering with the chills or too hot as my fever comes down and I’m just too tired to think or do much of anything.

Surprisingly my crohn’s pain is usually a little better or rather less painful when I have a fever and it gets worse again when the fever finally goes away. So right now my fever seems to be gone but I’ve got bad abdominal pain. Go figure. I can’t win for losing!

Obviously I haven’t been up to too much in the last few days what with my fevers zapping all my energy. Other than our current ice, snow and thunder storm that’s going on the only other interesting thing that’s happened in the last few days is that an old friend came over to see me on Monday.

My friend was in the area and she decided to pop in for a quick visit. I hadn’t seen her for maybe two years! She moved from the area when she got married two years ago, changed jobs and we just kind of lost touch with each other.

She’s going to have a few more changes in her life soon too. When I gave her a hug I couldn’t help but feel a baby bump! After she took her coat off I could see that she definitely is expecting. She’s only about four and a half months along but she’s so excited she’s already wearing maternity jeans! She’s so cute.

My long lost friend stayed for two hours or so and we had a chance to catch up on what’s been happening in our lives.

I don’t really like having people over when I’m not feeling well, but it’s different when it’s a really good friend. She didn’t mind that I lay on the couch for part of our visit.

Anything interesting happening in your life? Hopefully you guys are healthier than I am lately!

Do you hate popups as much as I do?

January 29, 2008 by Tricia

I mostly use firefox these days when I’m working on my sites or visiting websites on the internet. I have the popup blocker turned on and I only allow a few sites to give me popups simply because the only way to get the sites to work is to allow popups.

However, lately I’ve found a number of sites that are some how able to bypass the browsers popup blocker controls. Several sites I visited yesterday ended up automatically giving me popup ads.

I hate that!

Seriously, if you’re site works in such a way that you occasionally need to send a visitor to another page while they are doing something on one page – for example registering for the site or for a contest and the reader is supposed to agree to the terms of service or contest rules – don’t make it a popup. Let the link take the visitor to another tab or window or at least give them a choice of whether the link should popup or take them to a new tab.

As for popup ads? Get rid of them! If you want ads for your site tastefully place them in your sidebar or fit them in your post. Honestly. I never ever click on popup ads and I will not ever click on a popup ad. Ever!
