Promoting your site in the real world

March 7, 2008 by Tricia

I’ve been trying to think of a way to promote my sites when I’m not online.

Last November when I went to the Vegas blogging conventions a lot of people had made up business cards and some had even made up created little gifts to hand out with their logo and site address on them.

I’d thought of making up some cards before I went but honestly I was feeling so sick as I began to prepare for my trip that I just didn’t get around to it.

I’ve been thinking of making up some logo pens or something that I could hand out. Business cards too of course, but I think pens are good too because everyone needs a pen and if the pen them happen to be using has your logo and site address on it they might remember to visit your site right?

Have you come up with any cool ideas to promote your site offline?

Finally upgrading my WP sites and their plugins!

March 7, 2008 by Tricia

Over the last few days I’ve spent a good portion of my time updating all of my blogs. All of the new ones – the hush hush ones – have been updated to WP 2.3.3. It was easy to do because I was able to use Fantasico in my web hosting C-Panel to do it.

Now I have to update all of the blogs on this domain! Argh … I’ve moved those blogs to new web hosts twice in the last year and the last time was a manual update so this time round all the blogs will have to be manual updated too. It’s ok to do one or two manually, but when you have seven or eight that need to be upgraded manually it’s a pain in the butt! By the time I’m done I’ll be the WordPress upgrading queen! (17 blogs later!)

I’d also been having trouble on all my blogs when I’d try to save or publish a new post. A few months ago I had some kind of conflict occur when I upgraded my bad behavior plugin and the Google Sitemaps plugin on the same day. Ever since then I’d always get an error message when I saved or published a post. The posts were published but I’d have to check to be sure. It was a pain! I didn’t realize it but it was also messing up the do follow tags on my sites too. So there was a conflict between three plugins!

Luckily I discovered that there was yet another new Bad Behavior plugin update as well as a new Google XML sitemaps plugin. I updated those two plugins and refreshed my permalinks and TADA everything works right again!

Now I just hope that I don’t have any problems with my wordpress themes when I upgrade the sites on Feverishthoughts.com to the most recent WP upgrade. I think all my blogs on this domain are using 2.2.1 so it’ll be a big upgrade. If you drop by and notice that one of my feverishthoughts blogs is sporting a new very plain bare bones theme then you’ll know something strange happened when I updated the platform. It will only be temporary.

Once all that is done I can get back to work on the new blogs. One is a home and garden blog that will discuss mostly home type topics (my gardening blog will go back to mainly gardening!) such as decor, interior decorating, great recipes, tips for around the home and so on. The other blog is a shopping blog where I’ll talk about fashion trends, cosmetics, new home decor designs – who knows I’m sure I’ll even talk about platform beds on one or both!

Working on those two sites has inspired me again. I’m full of ideas and of course every time I find something cool to write about I also want to go out and buy it. I’ll be unveiling these new blogs shortly and I really hope that you like them. I’m trying to keep it fun, interesting and of course full of helpful information.

Have any of you updated your sites recently? Did it go well?

Anyone start any new blogs too? What is your new blog about? Are you being re-inspired as well?

I really need a holiday

March 7, 2008 by Tricia

I was just babbling on my other blog about how I need a holiday and soon! The weathers been so bad here this winter … I even think our snowy week managed to knock me out on Wednesday as I had a terrible migraine all day.

So … a holiday … Maybe we’ll take another trip to Las Vegas. We had a lot of fun when we were there last November. We’re a little short on funds this time round though so I’ll have to try to find a great deal or some cheap hotel Las Vegas if I can.

Ok I’m obviously still suffering from my migraine … they tend to make me talk funny and I guess type funny. I meant cheap Las Vegas hotels of course.

Do you have any suggestions for a hotel that won’t cost too much but that’s also nice and on the strip? We stayed in the Imperial Palace last time and I don’t want to stay there again.

Is Construction ruining your city?

March 4, 2008 by Tricia

I was watching the news last night and I was shocked to hear about how a church in protesting about how the commercial real estate near it is being used.

Like most people living in large cities I’m starting to get more than a little frustrated by all the construction going on all the time. There are so many condo’s going up in downtown Toronto it’s crazy. In fact, our whole shoreline has changed from the time I moved here in the 80’s. You used to be able to see the lake as you drove along Lakeshore Boulevard, but they might as well change the name of the street now as there are so many condos along the waterfront that you can barely see the lake from the boulevard anymore.

Still, if someone owns a property and if the city approves of the construction the owner should be able to build what they planned to build shouldn’t they? This one church doesn’t think so. The commercial property owner has plans to build two condo’s on the properties near the church and the church is protesting at city hall.

I guess I’m divided on this issue. On one hand I feel that there’s been too many tall buildings built in the city – particularly along the lake shore, but then as I said if the city is allowing the construction to take place I guess the builders have a right to put up their buildings.

The problem really lies with City Hall. They need to limit the number of new buildings allowed in each area of the city. They also need to preserve some of the areas that enhance our city and or make it unique – like our water front.

If you live in a big city how do you feel about the commercial properties that have been built in the last decade or so? Do they add to your city? Were they needed? Or do you think the new buildings are destroying something that was special about your town?

Well so far this year sucks too

March 4, 2008 by Tricia

It seems that my bad week, or maybe I should call it my bad year, continues.

I was so sick on Saturday that I stayed in bed until 8:30 pm! I had my period and the pain was so bad that I just couldn’t move. I’ve got endometritis, combined with Crohn’s disease it’s a real killer, and that causes me a ton more pain than anyone should ever have to go through. On top of that I broke out with a couple of zits. The last thing I need these days is to have to use an acne treatment too! Geesh!

The pain in my left side was so bad that I thought I’d end up in the hospital that day. I don’t know if the pain was from my Crohn’s or Endo. It wouldn’t go away at all no matter how much medicine I took and the only thing that made it feel a bit better was to keep my hand pressed to my side for hours on end. It finally started to ease up at about 6:30 that evening, but I stayed in bed for another two hours until I was sure I felt better.

Chris had been bringing me drinks all day. Warm drinks like coffee. He’d also been checking on me and bringing me pain medications whenever I called out for some more. By the time I came downstairs I was weak and dizzy. I think the pain meds took their tole on me and I kind of felt hung over. I also hadn’t eaten all day so I think that’s partly why I was so weak and dizzy.

I still have twinges of that nasty pain in my left side even today. I guess i”m still recovering from whatever my body was going through on Saturday. It’s been no where near as bad as it was on Saturday but it’s still hanging around. Seriously that day I wondered if either a cyst burst or even if my bowel burst and if I was getting peritonitis.

I just want to feel better. Even if it’s only for one day.
