Preparing for House Guests

July 15, 2012 by Tricia

I’m trying to get ready to have house guests again for a couple of days. My brother-in-law and nephew should be here sometime tomorrow and I think they’re staying until at least Tuesday, maybe longer.

The main purpose of the visit is to help with some renovations of our living room and dining room but of course it’s always nice to see family. They were away this weekend because my nephew was trying out for an OHL hockey team – hopefully he made the team. They’ll have to drive back to Chicago, which is where they’re from later this week.

My brother-in-law is a cigar smoker while an occasional cigar smoker. Mostly he smokes cigarettes. I think his latest brand of cigars is Rocky Patel which is one I’ve never heard of before but I guess he he brought it over from the US. Since this is now a non-smoking house he has to go outside and smoke. So far he doesn’t seem to mind that rule. I just hope it’s not pouring rain tomorrow like it has been today otherwise he may not like that very much.

Well, I suppose I should try to relax as the next few days will be quite hectic since we will have visitors and we will be doing renovations. I also have an appointment for another test on my hand. This time it’s a bone scan still trying to figure out what’s wrong with my hand. It’s a little better than it was but it still has a long way to go it seems.

My dog is STILL sick

July 15, 2012 by Tricia

Our dog Midnight has been sick for the past couple of weeks, overall, she hasn’t been too bad but she’s just not herself. We took her to the vet about three weeks ago and she was on medicine and she was a lot better for about a week and then she started going slowly downhill again. Then I noticed today that she was getting quite a bit sicker again so we called the vet and he was able to fit us in today.

The veterinarian decided on a very conservative treatment just changing her diet a little bit, doing a stool culture, and every time she’s outside we’re supposed to put a basket like muzzle on her face so that she can’t eat anything while she’s walking around just in case she’s munching on things that might be making her sick. She does eat the grass when she’s outside but we don’t let her get at anything else. We watch her very carefully when she’s outside. I’m pretty sure she’s not eating anything other than grass and maybe a few weeds that are mixed up in it but who knows maybe it’s the grass that irritating her.

The vet also said it could just be the heat that is making her so ill. Since it’s been so hot in the last few weeks we’ve been taking her on shorter walks and we do have air conditioning so she has been exposed to very little heat, but the vet still think she could be feeling and reacting to it.

I’m certainly hoping this treatment works, or that she just snaps out of it. I hate being worried about my baby.

While we were waiting for our appointment. I was looking around the office and I noticed that there was some pamphlets marked donate real estate to charity I’ve certainly never heard of that. Have you? I mean, I know that you can probably donate real estate charity, but I didn’t know there was a whole organization dedicated to it. I guess that makes sense.

Anyway, I mostly just looked at the little kittens that were in the office and browsed through the animal magazines while we waited for the appointment. I could tell my dog wasn’t quite herself because she didn’t even bark at the kittens. That’s totally not like her, although I’m sure the kittens appreciated her not barking.

Here’s hoping that Midnight gets better soon! I’m sure our home renovations and visiting relatives don’t help either -all the excitement and all.

Renovations continue

July 14, 2012 by Tricia

My living room and dining room is starting to look a little bit different thanks to all the work that was done last week. The renovations are no where near complete, but finally, for the first time in literally years, I can see that the room will be finished within weeks.

My brother in law, who came with his son, from Chicago to help us with our renovations had to leave for the weekend, but he’ll be back and we’ll be doing more work next week.

My brother in law and nephew were actually here because my nephew is about to join a Brockville OHL hockey team. He’s an extremely good hockey player and we – and the team owners – think he has a good chance of getting into the NHL .. so being on this team is hopefully the beginning of his professional hockey career. He’s a smart kid though – whether he’s on a hockey team or not he has education goals. He wants to be a doctor and he’s intelligent enough to become one.

I don’t know when my nephew is supposed to officially start with the Brockville hockey team if he joins them, but I know my brother in law and nephew will be back here next week for a few days and then they have to get back to Chicago. I think my brother in law has to drive his daughter to NC for a raleigh nc accounting interview. She’s going to be moving I believe or she’s thinking about it.

I’m in a for a few busy days so I guess I’d better relax while I can. Last week was pretty hectic!

What a great day

July 11, 2012 by Tricia

You know, I just decided I’m having a good day today. So far today things are going pretty well. I can’t say that too often so I’m just going to go with it.

My brother-in-law and nephew came up from Chicago today and are here to help my husband and I do some renovations in the house and so far we’re off to a great start getting things done we’ve wanted to do for many years. I swear our living room, dining room, can be finished in a couple weeks. How many years on this blog have I been saying I was going to start that renovation again? Well, it’s finally happening. Hallelujah.

Then this afternoon I had to go to the hospital to see my hand specialist Dr. and get the results of my MRI and as it turns out the results of my MRI are not bad. It seems that the ligament in my thumb isn’t torn which is good news and we’re not 100% sure what’s happening with my wrist – there still might be something happening with one of the bones. So I will have a special bone scan hopefully in the next week or two and see the doctor again in a few weeks. I might still have a broken bone in there we’re not 100% sure. Either way even though my hand and wrist still hurt quite a bit, it looks like it may be getting a little bit better. I’ve been told I don’t have to wear the splint quite as much, and I’ve been given some exercises I can do to increase mobility and my thumb and wrist and it should also help take some of the swelling down. With any luck my hand might be back to normal within a few weeks. Crossing my fingers on my right hand yay.

let’s see what else is good about today – It’s my brothers birthday, maybe I’ll go celebrate for him? Hey, are you having a good day? Maybe I’ll go buy a lottery ticket. Yeah, that’s what I should do. Then I could invest in some real estate sunset beach and really enjoy myself. Now wouldn’t that be nice?

Okay, time to go and enjoy the rest of this day I hope you’re having a great day too!

Harvest Eating – Healthy Eating

June 19, 2012 by Tricia

I think I generally try to eat healthy. By this I mean I try to eat fresh fruits and vegetables – organic if possible and since I live in a cold climate if the season allows I try to buy food items that are grown locally as well. I feel food that hasn’t traveled for a thousand miles likely is fresher. Don’t you?

That’s one of the reasons why I love the Spring, Summer and early Autumn Seasons here. There’s always fresh fruit and vegetables and each season has it’s stars. For example I love getting fresh corn in late July or August. At this time of year I enjoy fresh strawberries, leafy greens and young carrots.

Just as the information in this picture suggests I definitely flex my green thumb. Anyone who reads this blog semi regularly already knows that! I grow quite a few flowers in my front and backyards but I also grow some fruit and vegetables. I grow lettuce, spinach, peas, cucumber, tomatoes, tiny tom tomatoes, strawberries and raspberries. I was just noticing the other day that my Tiny Tom tomatoes have several green tomatoes on the plants so it won’t be long before I can add some home grown small tomatoes to my salads or simply pop one of those delicious sweet tomatoes into my mouth. Some of my strawberries have ripened as well.

Harvest Eating

Do you go out to local Farmers Markets to get fresh fruits and vegetables or grow some of your own in your backyard like I do? If you shop in the grocery store do you try to buy locally grown produce? Don’t you find fruits and veggies just taste better at this time of year?
