The streets are deserted – freezing rain

January 18, 2011 by Tricia

It must be very slippery outside right now because there’s very little traffic going by my house.

We’ve been having freezing rain, sleet, snow, rain and so on all evening. When my husband came home from work it was just starting to rain and we really had to go out to the grocery store so we quickly got in the car and hit the road before it started getting too slippery out.

I really didn’t want to go out because the weather was getting bad fast, but we needed milk and a few other things. So we were running around the store as fast as we could and then when we get to the cash registers there’s only two open because they’re installing new Symbol LS2208 scanners. Luckily because of the weather there weren’t too many people in the store so the lineup didn’t take too long.

Just as we were getting home it started to snow! I’m glad we made it home before the weather really started to get bad.

How’s the weather in your area? Are you getting freezing rain tonight too?

I’m exhausted

January 18, 2011 by Tricia

It was just a little over a month ago that I went to see my family doctor about how tired I had been. I thought it was my thyroid. I was just so tired, I could pretty much fall asleep any time of the day if no one bothered me fora few minutes.

I was also becoming more and more intolerant to cold weather and my skin was becoming drier. I also started gaining weight in late November and early December even though I wasn’t eating any more than usual. In fact I was probably eating less than usual. Remember all that weight I lost in September and October? I gained it all back in about three weeks! I even glanced at some hydroxycut reviews! Between the extreme tiredness, sudden weight gain and other symptoms I was seriously worried.

I’d had a thyroid test in November and my levels were within normal range … I only have half my thyroid and I take synthroid – so my doctor didn’t think there was anything going on with my thyroid … she though instead that I was suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder. I don’t really believe that since my symptoms (ie cold intolerance) don’t really fit with S.A.D. at all. She strongly suggested that I go out and by a therapy light and start using it.

I didn’t really agree with her. The blood test that she was going by was done the previous month and something might have changed, but I bought a therapy light the very next day, with money we don’t have. I had to do something to help myself. It’s a blue light – a Philips Golite and I’ve been using it for over a month now. I do feel slightly less tired but I wouldn’t say that there’s been any huge improvement.

I still think there’s something going on with my thyroid. The medication that I’m taking for my migraine might be affecting the blood tests (lab results) for my thyroid tests according to some research that I’ve been doing, so what looks like normal levels might really not be.

I’m seeing my family doctor tomorrow. She’s a bit of a ditz and I have a feeling she won’t have much to say about the light not working for me and me still be extremely tired. the only good thing is that I do have an appointment later this week with an endocrinologist because I have to have the growths on the remaining portion of my thyroid checked out by a specialist so I’ll bring up my extreme tiredness with her and see if she’ll do some more thorough testing instead of just the most basic test that my family doctor did.

I’m just exhausted these days … honestly, I think I could sleep 16 or 18 hours a day if I let myself and that’s really not like me at all. Normally I exist on very little sleep.

A snowy weekend here in Toronto

January 15, 2011 by Tricia

We woke up to snow here in Toronto this morning. Oh yes, we’ve had some snow on the ground pretty much since the start of the year, but unlike most other areas we haven’t been getting hit heavily with snow … well … until now.

In December it was the cold cold weather that was my biggest complaint. We barely had any snow … not even when New York was buried in it .. we barely seemed to have any, yet we were freezing. I mean freezing- – 27 Celsius (-17 F) or more with the windchill, brrr. My thyroid is acting up lately too (or maybe it’s S.A.D.) so it’s making me really intolerant to the cold so I’m freezing even inside the house .. so you can imagine how cold I felt when it was -27 Celsius outside. I might as well have been in the arctic in the dead of winter.

I’m not sure how much snow we’ve had this week, but it’s snowed a fair amount today and we’re expecting more through the weekend and I think there’s another big storm headed our way on Tuesday. I wouldn’t be surprised to see my jogging enthusiast neighbor moving around the neighborhood on Crescent Moon Gold 12 Snowshoes if the snow keeps up!

You know what’s kinds of strange about all of the snow we’ve had so far this winter? So far not one snow fall has been sticky snow .. you know, the kind of snow that’s good for making snow balls?

How do I know that?

Well .. my dog, a Labrador Retriever, really loves snow (and water, and swimming etc) and when she was a puppy I discovered that if I picked up snow and threw snow balls at her she thought it was one of the greatest things in the world. she’d try to catch each snow ball. It’s our little game every time we go outside and there’s fresh snow on the ground … that and she almost always has a roll in fresh snow.

So each time we go outside I pick up some snow and try to make a snow ball to throw at my funny black lab but it’s just not snowball snow. instead I’m just throwing handfuls of snow at her. She still thinks that’s fun, but not as much fun as snowballs.

Do you play in the snow? My dog loves when I take her out because she knows that I’ll play with her in the snow .. even if the snow’s not quite up to par. I have to remind my husband to throw some snow at the dog every once in a while …

What new cellphone should I get?

January 15, 2011 by Tricia

Sometime in the next month or two I think we’re going to have to get a new cellphone. Ours is about five years old and it’s just not working as well as it should any more … I mean, for example, it’s not holding it’s charge as well as it used to and that’s a pain.

I’ve always been intrigued by the iPhone, but I’m not sure I need a cellphone that does as much as the iPhone does. But then … I guess cellphones do pretty much everything these days so maybe I should get one with lots of features. What do you think of the blackberry playbook?

So … does anyone have any suggestions?

How did you bring in the new year?

January 3, 2011 by Tricia

Happy New Year to all of my readers and visitors!

I hope that you had a wonderful holiday season and that the new year brings you health, happiness and that at least one of your wishes for yourself come true.

I had a fairly uneventful New Year’s eve and new years day … pretty much how I like it. I used to do the party thing … ie go down town to the clubs or go to someones New Year’s Party or even hold my own … but it’s such a hassle after a while. I know, that probably sounds like I’m a party pooper, but my husband and I just like having a nice dinner together and doing our own thing.

Hopefully none of you partied so much that you’re now looking in to inpatient rehab centers wink wink. LOL With any luck the hangovers are long gone and life is back to normal for most of you?

So tell me .. what did you do to celebrate the New Year and did you make any resolutions?

I didn’t make any resolutions. Hey, I already quit smoking in October! That’s a big one! The 12th of this month will be 3 months for me. Also, thanks to the medication that I’m taking for my migraines I can’t even have a drink (another reason we didn’t go out to any parties for New Years) so I haven’t even had a drink for close to five months. Not that I ever drank much before that, but that’s two big things I quit doing all before the new year.

So what resolutions did you make and did you break them yet?
