I love freebies!

July 5, 2007 by Tricia

I almost forgot! My sister is a jewelry engraver but every once in a while she gets orders to engrave plaques, trophies and things like that for businesses. Basically if something is engravable she engraves it.

Well, it turns out that she’s got a box of promo pens sitting in her office. The company that wanted her to engrave the pens with another businesses motto messed up. I don’t know if the lines weren’t the correct lines or if there was a spelling mistake in the original order but something messed up.

It wasn’t my sisters fault. Just to be clear. Whatever happened was the company that brought the work to her fault.

So the company is now giving her a whole new order of promo pens to engrave and they’ve told her that she can keep the first case of pens that she did. They paid her for the work too.

My sister can’t use all those pens so she’s offered to give us half of them. They are really nice pens too.

I’m always looking for pens here because my husband is the biggest pen thief in the world so this is a great bonus!

Actually I’ve received some pretty cool stuff from my sister via messed up engraving orders -none of them here fault. We have a couple of nice silver beer steins and a few other cool things. It all gets used.

Do you ever get any cool freebies because of other peoples mistakes?

No call telemarketer list – get on it!

July 5, 2007 by Tricia

Last night my husband and I were watching a 24 hour news channel. My husband likes to watch this channel for a few minutes before he goes to bed. We saw one of those ticker lines go by that said that 3 women were sexually assaulted in a drug store in our area.

Wanting to know more about the story we went to the channels website but we couldn’t find anything on the story. I thought that was odd … but even odder that three women were assaulted at the same time? Or was it the same day? Or perhaps it was just a total of three women in that particular store? That’s what we wanted to know. I still don’t know the answer.

While I was on the site I saw another news article that caught my eye. It said something about the new no call list that would stop market research and telemarketing companies from calling your home if you got yourself on the list. It said the site was about to be approved.

Hmmm that was another odd one for me because I signed up on the official site about two years ago. What did they mean the site was just being approved? Unless this is a new site their reporters are way behind in the news!

Once I signed onto that no call list we almost stopped getting calls from telemarketers and market research companies. Yes we still get a few calls here and there, but we went from getting five or so calls a week to maybe one every two or three weeks. A dramatic improvement.

The list I’m talking about is in Canada. If i find a link for it I’ll list it so you can sign up. If you aren’t in Canada you might want to see if something like that is available in your area. I know the people that call are just doing their job but it’s always dinner time or when I’m busy doing something else. I just don’t like the calls and I’m so glad to have found a way to cut them down substantially.

Interchangable memory

June 24, 2007 by Tricia

One of my friends has a Dell computer and she was telling me that she wanted to increase her computers memory but she was having a hard time getting Dell Memory for her computer.

I still find it funny sometimes when people assume that they must stick with a brand name, or the exact brand name of their product, when getting accessories or in this case improving their computers capacity.

I explained to her that as long as she got the same type of memory it didn’t matter if it was made by Dell. Of course you also have to get the same size, so if she had one 256K memory then she’d have to get another of the same size other wise she might run into trouble.

I just thought I’d post about this in case others were under the same assumption that you always have to buy the product by the same manufacturer.

Condos as investment properties

June 20, 2007 by Tricia

When Chris and I were first shopping around for a new home we mainly looked at houses, but we also looked at a few condos.

Having lived in an apartment for far too many years I really wasn’t all that interested in living in a condo so I’m happy that we opted to purchase the house that we currently live in.

I did get some ideas about purchasing a condo as an investment property though and if I ever get enough extra money saved up I might buy a condo that I’d use to rent out.

Coincidentally, while I was looking into condos as an investment I came across the concept of Condo Hotels. These are basically properties that function like hotels but if I have the concept down pat each condo is owned by a separate investor. The management company does all the work as far as taking bookings and serving the clients that book the condos.

Typically these type of condos are not rented out for just a day or two like a normal hotel room would be. No, they are rented for a week or a month at a time. Perhaps by a business person that’s in town doing business for a few months.

It’s an interesting idea. Certainly if you liked the idea of purchasing a condo as an investment property but didn’t want to do all the work of maintaining the condo and making sure that the condo was booked most of the year something like a condo hotel would be a great option.

Another way to promote your website

June 20, 2007 by Tricia

I was just thinking the other day that I’m going to get some business cards made up so that I can promote my websites.

I used to have cards printed out that listed my exotic pets websites so that when I’d go into a pet store that sold exotic pets I could hand out my cards to customers that I met in the store that wanted to learn more about their potential new pets care.

Now that I have a ton of blogs I might as well do something similar with business cards. It would certainly be easier to hand out a card than wait for someone to find a pen so that they could write down your website address now wouldn’t it?

Do you have business cards with your blog or website address printed on it? If so, has it helped you promote your site in any way?
