Time for new shoes

August 6, 2007 by Tricia

I’m sure you’ve noticed when you are in the hospital that a lot of the staff wear running shoes. Why? Well because they are the most comfortable shoes to wear when you’re on your feet all day. They have more support.

I’ve tried the shoes made for nurses in the past and they just weren’t as good as running shoes.

Now, I’m not working in the hospital at the moment. I still have my job but I’m off due to illness. Chris, my husband, on the other hand is an OR attendant and he’s on his feet all day.

It’s time to get him some new shoes! When we’re working we tend to go through running shoes like some people go through socks. He’s started looking for new shoes and I think he might get a pair of Air Jordan running shoes this time around. I don’t think he’s used that brand before but he really likes a couple of the styles.

We’ll probably get him a pair and see how they hold up to being constantly walked in.

Anyone else wear Air Jordan shoes? Are they comfortable? Do they hold up well to a lot of use?

The guessing game

August 2, 2007 by Tricia

I just wrote about a fun site on my Celebrity blog called Guess Now. It’s a site where you can try your hand at predicting future events like which celebrity will be the next to end up getting some kind of addiction treatment, or what will be the outcome of an election or what big news event will happen next.

It looks like an interesting site. I might try my hand at it. You can cash in the points you earn when your prediction comes true for cash. Sounds good to me!

Low Water Pressure

July 29, 2007 by Tricia

We had a strange thing happen the other day. I think it was Tuesday evening. I went upstairs to use the washroom and I noticed that the toilet barely had any water in it. Hmmm that was odd. Then I turned on the bathroom faucets and they worked, water poured out of them.

I thought oh no! We’ve got some kind of problem with our toilet. The last thing I wanted to have to do was call a plumber.

So I took the lid off the toilet tank to have a look inside and there was no water inside. I tried flushing the toilet to see if that would trigger the tank to fill up and it didn’t. At that point I was calling Chris to come upstairs and have a look.

Meanwhile I was also looking for the little knob near the floor behind the toilet where we could turn the water on and off. I don’t think every house is like that. The old home owner put on off knobs under the sinks, in a closet for the bathtub water supply and as I just said behind the toilet. Maybe he had lot of plumbing problems in the past? Or maybe he was just a very smart man making it easier to fix things and still have water in the rest of the house?

Well it wasn’t the little knob – that hadn’t been touched and it was in the on position. Chris thought maybe it was the pump thing in the toilet and he thought he might be able to get a replacement part the next day.

At that point I remembered that we were watering our garden using a sprinkler. I asked Chris to shut off the water outside so we could see what happened. He refused at first saying no way – the water is still coming out of the taps and the tub, it can’t be low water pressure.

Well … it turns out I was right. I eventually convinced him to go outside, turn off the sprinkler and see what happened and as soon as the outside water was off the toilet started filling.

That had never happened before. Maybe some neighbors were watering as well the last time one of us flushed that toilet and it just didn’t have enough water pressure to fill the water tank?

We do have low water pressure in this area. I hate it!

My husband might be getting sick again

July 27, 2007 by Tricia

Wednesday was not a good day. As I briefly stated yesterday my husband ended up in the ER for a good portion of Wednesday.

He works as an attendant in the OR recovery area. Sometime around 2 pm that day he began to feel a bit weak and dizzy. As a nurse I’m used to patients not being very descriptive and working towards getting them to describe what pain or symptoms they’ve had in a meaningful way that I can understand but for the life of me, I’ve never been able to get a good feel for what Chris’ symptoms really are. He’s very vague.

He knew something was up. Two years ago he had these same feelings and ended up passing out a few times. That bought him a weeks stay in two hospitals while they tested him for a rare heart arrhythmia called Brugada syndrome that would have required that he be fitted with a defibrillating pacemaker. In the end all they new was that he’d had changes to his ECG but none of the many tests that he had showed any structural or electrical problems with his heart.

It took almost a year but he eventually got better. In the meantime I was sick as well and of course still am. We make a great couple don’t we?

He was feeling bad enough that he walked over to the pulse oximeter and slipped it on his finger to see how fast or slow his heart was beating and what his oxygen levels were. As far as I know they were fine.

The nurses he works with noticed he was acting funny and that he didn’t look so well and he told them what was going on. One of them walked him down to the ER where he stayed until 11:30 pm Wednesday night.

I went to the hospital to be with him for a while and he was doing fine. Still feeling a bit off but no where near as bad as how he felt two years ago when this first started happening to him. As usual, with anyone with complaints that sound like they could be related to the heart he had a couple of ECG’s (I think in the US you called them EKGs) and had his heart enzymes – mainly Tropin – checked twice to make sure that he wasn’t in the process of having a heart attack.

He didn’t really get any answers. Not that they didn’t try. There’s just nothing obvious wrong with him. They know something happened two years ago because he has permanent changes to his ECG, but other than that they do not know why he gets these symptoms every now and then. He feels weak and dizzy when it happens and he says his legs feel buzzy. Back to him not describing what’s going on well. He’s occasionally had pain in his chest and his arm as well.

I didn’t stay with him the whole time at the hospital (it’s two blocks away) because he sent me back home. I’ve been very sick this week and he could see that I wasn’t fairing that well. If he’d really been ill he wouldn’t have felt comfortable with me leaving. When he was hospitalized for a week two years ago he never wanted me to leave at all.

He was feeling much better on Thursday. He stayed home from work – his department advised him to stay home and he only experienced his odd symptoms once at about 6 pm for a few minutes.

It’s kind of scary not knowing what’s wrong with him. The fact that they can’t find anything specific is both good and bad. Good that there’s nothing obvious, but sometimes having a diagnosis, even if it’s bad, can make you feel a little better because at least you know what you are dealing with and with luck there’s some type of treatment for it.

I guess I’ll be spending the next few days watching him like a hawk.

I did think of something that I want to bring up with our family doctor. I’m going to write it here so I can remember to discuss it with her. If my memory serves me right I think Chris was sick with the flu or something a little while before his symptoms started two years ago. Well … Chris just had the flu last week – including some extremely high fevers! I wonder if there’s a connection somehow? Hmmm

Our next reno project will be the bathroom

July 26, 2007 by Tricia

I have great news! Remember the other day I showed you some photos of bathroom vanities? Well I showed the website to my husband, pointing out the two main bathroom vanities that I liked best and he likes them too.

He’s agreed that our next reno project will be our upstairs bathroom! We’re going to seriously think about purchasing one of those vanities while they are still on sale.

I’m so excited! I’ll have the most beautiful bathroom when it’s done!
