Replacing the TV in the bedroom

February 20, 2013 by Tricia

I’d like to replace the TV in my bedroom. I have one of those old anolog televisions and it barely works. It never really worked all that well and because of that I never watched TV upstairs very often.

I know they say you shouldn’t watch TV in bed, don’t they. Who is “They” anyway? However, sometimes it is nice to have a TV in your bedroom. You know, when you’re sick in bed and can’t move – those are the times when a TV comes in handy!

So .. sometime this week I might go looking for a small flat screen TV. Not too small but I mean it will be smaller in dimensions overall than the analog TV and a whole lot lighter! If I find something I like for a good price I’ll have to check out the Premier Mounts Store for a TV mount that will fit the new tv. I don’t think the TV mount that’s holding the current TV will work.

Do you have a TV in your bedroom? Do you watch a lot of TV or do you only watch TV occasionally?

Latin Tapas-Small Plates With New World Inspiration

December 30, 2012 by Trish

If you’re looking for interesting appetizers for a cocktail party, consider tapas.  One of the possible origins of the word, which translates to “top or cover”, is that when you are standing to eat and drink, you would need to set your small plate on top of your drink in order to handle both.  While tapas originated in Spain, fusion cuisine has allowed inventive chefs to introduce flavors from all over the world to tapas dishes.  This type of food also lends itself well to tasting menus if you want to plan a themed dinner party with many small courses, each served with a different wine.

Having spent most of my adult life in Latin American countries, I find that my cooking is always more than a little influenced by Latin flavors.  It’s nice too, that the grocery stores, which cater to Mexicans where I live in California, are stocked with seasonings and ingredients that are rarely found in most big chain grocery stores.

Freestyle Latino Cuisine

When taking liberties with traditional recipes, it’s important to take into consideration flavors that are currently trendy.  You can never go wrong with bacon.  Add bacon to something that didn’t have it before and people will stampede to try it.  Latin flavors have recently had a surge in popularity, even snack food companies have been coming up with chips that taste like cracked pepper, chili lime, chipotlé, jalapeño, and buffalo wings.  Korean flavors have also become super popular so we’re seeing an interesting fusion of Korean and Latin.  One of my favorite happy hour places offers Korean beef tacos or quesadillas that are wonderful.

The controversy over small plates in restaurants has polarized diners.  People either love them or hate them.  Some complain that it is expensive compared to ordering a normal meal, others say they never feel satisfied.  Even cartoon characters have an opinion.  Marge Simpson rants, “They’re like appetizers for a meal that never comes.”  People that love eating this way say that it is way more social, and it’s a wonderful way to try new things without committing to a full sized portion.  I think the key is to have the right dining companions.  With so many people avoiding ingredients, it can be difficult to order dishes to share.  If you have a group of friends without food issues, it is fun and enjoyable.

If you are going to serve tapas at your party, here are some of my favorite small plates.

Ceviche Shooters – serve shrimp ceviche in shot glasses, garnished with a sprig of cilantro

Patatas Criollas Bravas – crispy yellow potatoes with spicy chili sauce

Shrimp al Diablo – spicy shrimp in garlic sauce with chipotle flakes

Fried Green Tomatillos – served with whipped goat cheese blended with arugula, walnuts, and lemon

Stuffed Dates – with chorizo, wrapped in bacon

Grilled Street Corn – skewered corn with salty paprika butter and cotija cheese

Empanadas – pulled pork and caramelized onion with chipotle mayo

Mojito Shrimp Pinchos – grilled skewered shrimp with a minty rum marinade

Hamburguesita – sliders with chimichurri and crispy onions

Mexican Albóndigas – meatballs, with tomato chipotle sauce

Crab Croquetas – savory fritters with adobo tartar sauce

Sweet Corn Tamale Cakes – with Pisco Sauce

7 Items Every Good Home Theater Must Have

November 28, 2012 by Trish

A home theater system is a great way to get more enjoyment out of your home. While the initial investment may be expensive, this is an investment that will save you money over time. Instead of heading to the movies, you can kick back with a Blu-Ray and a bowl of popcorn. The following are just seven items every home theater system must have.

1080p HD TV

It’s important to buy a TV with the best resolution and that means a 1080p HD LCD or plasma TV. Many experts also recommend a TV that is LED backlit and has quatron technology, which means the TV uses four colors instead of three. If you enjoy 3D movies or video games, you should also consider a TV that has this technology built in.

Surround Sound System

One of the reasons people love going to the movies is the quality of the sound. A sound system with a subwoofer and at least four speakers should be part of your home theater system. This is something you do not want to skimp on. Spend the extra money and time shopping for the best system. Visit the electronics store and listen to several brands before making your final decision.

Blu-Ray Player

If you love movies, you need a Blu-Ray player that handles 1080p HD resolution. It’s also a nice feature to purchase a player that will upconvert DVD to movies to a better resolution. You also have the option to purchase a player that will allow you to watch Netflix movies.

TV and Subscription Viewing Devices

Obviously, you want access to great television. Because of the latest advances, satellite is usually the best option. For example, Dish Network allows you to get a DVR that will record up to 6 shows at once and the company also offers Blockbuster @ Home service. If you didn’t purchase a Blu-Ray player than handle Netflix and other subscription services, you may want to purchase a Roku player or even a gaming console that will allow you to use these services.

HDMI Cables

It doesn’t do you any good to invest in a great Blu-Ray player or satellite service if you don’t have HDMI cables. Without the proper cables, you won’t get HD reception.

Surge Protector

Just like you protect your computer, you want a surge protector to protect your home theater equipment. A surge protector also makes it much easier to unhook your equipment when a storm rolls in.

Universal Remote

Last, but not least, invest in a universal remote to make it easier to control your multiple devices. You don’t want to spend hundreds on a universal remote, but you need to make sure it handles the number of devices you have and has room to add additional devices in the future.

A home theater can save you a lot of money on going out for entertainment. Follow the tips above and you’ll have a system that you and your family will love.

Weeds is finally on in Canada

September 12, 2012 by Tricia

I can’t believe that Weeds only just started last week here in Canada. It’s usually on Showtime Canada and I’ve been watching for it all summer but they didn’t have it on and they kept saying on their site that they didn’t know when they’d be able to air the final season. It seemed very odd.

This past weekend I finally discovered that Weeds had started last Tuesday. Not on Showtime Canada but on IFC Canada so I had to scramble to find the first episode of season 8 and then set up to tape all the rest of the episodes every Tuesday.

What a mess eh? Anyway. I know in the US the finale is about to air. Please please please do not let me know what is happening this season. I’ve avoided any posts or articles about the show because I’ve been waiting to watch the final season and it’s so hard when we here in Canada are so far behind.

My Living Room and Dining Room Renovation is coming along

August 10, 2012 by Tricia

I can’t wait until our living room and dining room renovations are finished. It’s very slow going.

It seems like every time we get on a roll we find something that sets us back a day or two. For example, today we were starting to put the quarter round on and noticed that in one area the floor must not have been sanded properly when we originally sanded it after taking off the original baseboards and quarter round so the wood floor was raised higher in one area and lower in another. So that resulted in a couple hours of sanding. Now we’ll have to do some staining and polyurethaning before we can resume our work.

At this rate it’s going to be a few more weeks before we have everything done, but I can almost see the finished product. Well I think I’ve had the finished room in my head for years I’ve just been waiting to see it for a long time.

When everything is finished I’m going to rearrange the furniture. I’d also like to either replace the tv stand – which is really nice, but very heavy to move when cleaning, or look at tv mounting brackets and maybe just have the TV mounted on the wall instead of on a stand. I don’t know, I’ll have to see.

My dog still uses her crate and that’s a big eye sore in the living room too. I’d love to either move that to another room or pack it up for storage … but she really likes sleeping in it. I don’t know. I guess that’s another thing I’ll have to think about once the living room dining room renovation is finished.

I’m just happy that the reno is almost done. Yeahhhhhh!
