Reruns all week – time to find other things to do!

December 20, 2011 by Tricia

The one thing I hate about the holiday season is that there’s absolutely nothing on TV. I don’t enjoy watching holiday programs. Yeah call me a Grinch or whatever you want but I don’t like them.

So I guess I’m left to venture into channels that I don’t normally watch – maybe try to find a decent movie, or a good documentary or get stuck in rerun city.

I know … maybe tomorrow I’ll actually go out to a movie. I’m dying to see The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I’ve read all three books and I’m interested in seeing this first English movie to see how well they did at interpreting the book. I’m sure the book will still be better, but the movie reviews so far sound good so I don’t think it will be a waste of money.

Do you get a little bored during the holiday season when you have some free time on your hands and there’s absolutely nothing on TV?

A long stressful battle with our Wireless company seems to be over

June 22, 2011 by Tricia

I haven’t said much, but it’s been more than a month and a half since my husband and I first started having major problems with our Cable / Internet and Cellphone provider – Rogers. You’d think a company that we were buying so many services from (including a few magazine subscriptions now that I think about it) would be able to figure things out a lot quicker and maybe not cause us so much stress in the process.

It all started in early May when I happened to call Rogers about something to do with my account. I honestly can’t remember what it was now, maybe something to do with my cable tv service since that’s what most of our calls are about and the person taking care of me asked me if I wanted to save a bit of money on my wireless bill and of course I did because Canadians seem to pay pretty much the highest charges there are so saving a few dollars is always good. As it turns out I ended up with a new voice plan for a very good price and since we’d never ever had a free cellphone from the company and our current one was getting old I let the guy talk me into them sending me a Blackberry Curve. Big mistake … that’s when all the problems started or at least that’s what seems to have exposed all of the problems in my account!

To make a very very long story short – We really didn’t like the Blackberry. I didn’t want a data plan and of course the curve we were sent was the only one that you couldn’t use Wifi for free on – you had to actually buy a plan to use Wifi. I wasn’t about to pay extra to use my own Wifi in my house for my phone! Plus I disliked the tiny buttons so I sent the phone back after having it for only 6 days. The same day we sent the phone back my husband was out in a store using our old phone and he called our house and I noticed that our name came up on our home phone but the cell number wasn’t ours – it was an Ottawa number! A city five hours away! My home town in fact!

What the heck????

Rogers had given my cellphone number that I’d had for about 15 years away! Luckily the transfer must have taken place that day and we discovered the change quickly enough that we were able to get my old cellphone number back. Two weeks later we discovered that a reserved extra phone number was also tied to my account. Oh and when they finally restocked the Blackberry that we returned … three weeks later – they charged my account $400 twice for early term cancellation and for canceling my voice plan which was also apparently on a three year term … even though I never canceled the voice plan and I returned the phone with the 15 day and or under 30 minutes of use quota.

We had the charges reversed, but by this time every time we spoke with someone at Rogers they’d find something else wrong with our account. All I wanted to do was get all the problems resolved, make sure I didn’t have some nasty bill coming to me get that I didn’t deserve and then maybe get the free promotional hardware upgrade (ie cellphone) that I was offered back at the beginning of May .. seeing as I’ve had an account with Rogers since oh … 1985 and I’ve never ever had a free cellphone from them it’s probably about time I got one right? Oh and I had a nice one picked out too seeing as they seem to be the only cellphone provider in the Toronto area that has the Nokia N8 – this phone blows other cameras, camcorders and cellphones away!

My account wasn’t cooperating, no matter what anyone tried they couldn’t do a hardware upgrade after that initial Blackberry Curve went out to me. I have no idea what happened but it took more than a month to fix. They finally fixed it on Friday June 17th. Yep, that’s when I got the call that I was finally approved for promotional hardware upgrades to my Rogers account. Only one big month and a half long sob story later! I get so stressed out when I see a Rogers sign, logo or even one or their Red vans in my neighborhood now. That’s how bad this whole situation made me feel. I think my husband and I spoke with just about every department at Rogers trying to get things resolved. It finally went to the office of the President (whatever that really means) and the person handling our case had to escalate our account issue with the IT department twice over a weeks time before it was finally resolved.

So … the man taking care of our case at Rogers had them send out the Nokia N8 that we wanted. It arrived on Monday. I didn’t get around to setting it up until last night and I really experimented with it by taking some pictures and a video earlier today. I think we’re going to enjoy this phone. It sounds great, it’s sleek, loaded and the camera on it is amazing – 12 megapixels – that’s better than my main camera! Oh Boy! Now if I can just keep the darn phone out of my husbands hands I’ll be happy. It’s mine, I fought for it, it’s mine.

Funny video of my dog rolling in the snow – must see

February 26, 2011 by Tricia

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been having fun taking videos of my dog Midnight. I believe I mentioned in a post or two that we are the proud new owners of a Flip Camcorder. It’s the latest version – 3rd generation, 8 gb. We bought it near the beginning of February and since it arrived we’ve been using it pretty regularly to capture our dogs antics around the house and outdoors.

Our dog is quite a ham. I think she’s become more of a ham since we started video taping her regularly too. I think she realizes that we act differently when we have the little black camera in our hand or that we want her to act different .. so she acts up .. she barks like crazy and runs around and totally isn’t herself. At least she was like that in the first week or so, I think she’s getting use to the camera now and she’s beginning to act a bit more like herself again, which is good, because that’s really the dog that I want to show you, not the one that’s acting up.

We do have another video camera, an HD Sony Camera but we barely use it for some reason. So we got this one because we figured it would be a little easier to use and get video uploaded onto the internet so we could get the videos on our blogs.

I have to figure out how to piece together some of the videos that I’ve been taking. You see, my dog does this really cute thing, she jumps up and down like she’s on a trampoline when she wants us to slide her bone across the floor to her. We call this dog hockey. So I have all these videos of Midnight jumping up and down and chasing a bone and barking and barking as she does. I’m sure it’s kind of funny … but if I could mostly piece together a video of the jumping I think most people would get a laugh of the “jumping dog”. So I’m going to have to work on that. Who knows maybe Midnight will become a video star, the next Youtube star .. hmmm I’ll have to get her some costumes and bow ties to dress her up. LOL

Anyway .. for now I have a video of Midnight rolling around in the snow for you. She’s always loved the snow. She loves rolling in it too. She’ll roll in the snow for a whole walk if she can much to the delight of anyone passing by as it looks absolutely ridiculous … as you’ll soon see …. take a peek:

If you want to keep an eye on my YouTube account I’ll be uploading all of the videos that we’ve been taking over the last two weeks. I think there’s about 25 videos so far – pretty much all dog. Of course my YouTube account is about five or six years old and it has other older videos on it too so you might find some of the older stuff amusing too. Feel free to browse if you’d like.

We got an iTouch iPod

February 10, 2011 by Tricia

Well I finally entered this millennium and got an iPod.

My husband and I were shopping in Best Buy last weekend and I told him that I wanted to look at the iPods, and as it happened some people from Apple were there and they had a special offer on the iPod touch.

I’ve been thinking of getting and iPod for years so it was about time I got around to getting one. I ended up buying the 32 gb iPod iTouch. It’s fantastic! We love it. I think that sometime in the near future my husband and I will be fighting over it and we’ll end up having to get another one. LOL

Each morning my husband scrolls through the Apps and downloads free Guitar and music related apps and at night I end up searching online in the Apps store for interesting Apps like restaurant finders, Facebook apps, Radio Apps and I’ve even browsed around for that app that will work with my Nike running shoes. I think the App is called the Nike + iPod App.

All in all it’s pretty cool. We’re both having fun exploring the iTouch.

Now we have to get to work and organize our music. My laptop has about 5 gig of music and the desktop which my husband uses the most (but that I used to use before we got a Laptop) has about 15 gig of music … and then there are all our CD’s that we want to burn. Hmmm … maybe we should have bought the 160 Gig Classic … but it doesn’t have all the other features – well if we decide to get a second iPod the Classic will be our second one.

So now that I’m having fun playing with my brand new iPod do you have any suggestions for me as to what accessories I might want to use with my iPod?

Oh and as for Apps … we’re totally new to Apps since we don’t have a cellphone that uses apps. What are your suggestions for Must Have Apps?

I might as well admit that the week before last we bought a Flip Camera too … so expect to see some videos soon! I’ve taken about 30 videos of my dog since we got the Flip!

We’re very happy with our new TV

February 11, 2010 by Tricia

We finally got our new HDTV on Saturday! So far, we’re very happy with the TV that we had to wait more than three weeks to get.

The new TV is a Samsung 50 inch series 8 plasma HDTV (PN50B850). It’s supposed to be one of the thinnest TV’s on the market right now, and for a plasma, it has one of the brightest pictures.

It took us a couple of hours on Saturday to get the new TV hooked up properly on the new TV stand which has a mount that holds the TV about a foot above the stand. Of course hooking it up to the Home theater system was part of that 2 hour or so set up too.

Once we had it all hooked up correctly we were amazed by the picture! We thought we had a fairly nice TV when we got the Samsung DLP several years ago, but this picture is much much better! Of course the DLP’s light bulb was getting old so the picture might have not been quite as bright as it would have been if it had a new bulb in it.

When I registered the TV at Samsung a tiny message came up when I typed in the serial number. It said the TV was manufactured on January 31st – two weeks after we’d ordered it, so in a way our TV was made just for us! Made to order anyway since it was on back order for a few weeks. LOL

The buzzing problem that this TV model has been notorious for hasn’t reared it’s ugly head as of yet. I had heard that Samsung had a fix for the problem and since our TV was just made hopefully it has the fix built in and we won’t experience that dreaded buzzing problem that I’ve read about so much in various forums and reviews.

We haven’t had a lot of luck with appliances and electronics in the last year or so, i.e. broken washing machine, broken toaster oven, furnace making weird sounds, DLP TV dying and other problems, so we’re hoping that our luck has changed and no problems crop up.

I haven’t played with any of the color levels on the TV yet. It’s just in standard viewing mode for now. Apparently with a Plasma you’re supposed to run it in standard for about 100 hours before you start playing with the settings in order to avoid any burn in problems. Of course this TV has a built in screen wipe that we can turn on if we do notice any burn in that will apparently erase it quickly.

Along with a new home theater system (a Yamaha 6230) we also got one of those high tech remotes (we got a deal!). The new remote was easy to set up. I customized everything by hooking it up to my computer and now all we have to do to watch tv is hit one button on the remote and the TV, home theater and PVR all turn on to the correct settings. This will make it a lot easier when our in-laws or other guests come for a visit. The old remote confused my father in law to no end and all he really had to do was hit separate power buttons for the TV and cable box (PVR) so getting it down to one button should help. I hope!

I’ve spent the last few days watching the new TV while still recovering from that darn cold I got. Geez … I’ve had the cold almost as long as we were waiting for the TV to come in. LOL I’m happy to report that my cold seems to finally be going away. Just a few sniffles now. Now if only I’d stop getting emails for Sacramento homes for sale when I live in Toronto I’d be a happy camper!

Anyone else have a Plasma TV … perhaps even the one we have (a Samsung PN50B850)? Are you happy with it?
