We can travel with our puppy now

January 16, 2008 by Tricia

I just realized that now that our puppy has all of her shots we can take her not just to the park, but over the boarder to the US soon!

She finished her shots last Monday so she should have built up immunity and recovered fully from her shots by this weekend. Yeah … we can go to the park or maybe to the beaches for the first time with our puppy! Cool. Oh and she also had her rabies shot too.

Apparently if we want to bring her with us to the States we should have proof of rabies vaccination and proof of age. I guess it’s a good thing that we got her registration certificate for the Canadian Kennel Club as well this week. The certificate lists her parents names – Buck Shot Buck is the Sire – good name, her tattoo numbers, her CKC registration number, our names and her date of birth.

So now if we want to say visit Niagara Falls and then slip over to the US side with our dog we can. Heck, maybe we’ll do a road trip vacation in a few months. I’ve always wanted to go to Carolina’s Outer Banks. Several of our friends have been there and they say it’s a lovely vacation area. It’s a long drive, but not too bad. We just need to make time for a road trip. They do take longer than flying to a vacation spot after all.

Puppy went to the groomers for the first time

January 15, 2008 by Tricia

Yesterday we took our puppy to the groomers for the first time. It was an interesting experience for all of us.

Since our pup is a Labrador Retriever with short hair she probably doesn’t really need to go to the groomers all that badly. I mean, labs tend to love water, and the one time I gave her a bath and a few times when I rinsed her off in the tub (not a bath just a clean up) she was fine. Actually she really enjoyed the water and tried to drink right from the shower nozzle when it was pointed at her.

I even did her nails myself about two weeks ago with no real problems. I’ll admit some of the edges were a little rough and I got a few scratches later when I was playing with her, but I managed to cut her nails without hurting or traumatizing her.

Of course I’ve had a lot of practice cutting nails on small animals … well .. reptiles. LOL I used to cut my Chinese Water Dragons and Iguana’s nails! Now that was an interesting experience. They got used to get their nails cut though and they’d just sit on my leg or lie in my lap as I picked up one of their feet and cut and then filed their nails. So you gotta figure cutting a dogs nails would be easy huh?

If your curious you can read about how to cut lizard nails at my water dragon website. Actually the info is very similar to what you’d do when cutting a dog or cats nails so if you don’t know how to cut your pets nails it might help.

Anyway … since we’ve been taking our puppy to puppy training classes at Petsmart they give out a coupon at the end of each class. One of the coupons was for $4 off the Puppy Grooming Package. I believe the current full price is supposed to $17.99, but we somehow managed to get a real deal!

We brought Midnight into the groomers at 3 pm and left her with the groomers. We’ve left her alone at home, but we’ve never left her at someones house let alone in the hands of strangers before so we had no idea how she’d react. We dropped her off and left the store as I was sure I’d be peeking in the grooming section window and probably upsetting Midnight even more by watching.

We left the store to go grocery shopping while she had a shampoo, massage and blow dry, hand brushing and loose hair removal, nail trimming, and an ear cleaning/plucking. Once she was done they gave her a red bandanna. She looked so cute!

The groomer said that she was the most well behaved puppy that he’d ever groomed.

Proud mom moment here.

We thought he was just saying that but he went on to describe how she behaved when he washed her and blow dried her and we eventually believed he was telling us the truth. He thought that the blow dryer would have scared her but she apparently liked it. He said she was trying to lick the blow dryer or something to that effect.

The only time he had a bit of a problem was when he was cutting her nails as she wasn’t settling down. He said he must have cut to close on one of her nails and I guess it hurt a bit so she stood still after that.

She didn’t stay still when I was cutting her nails either, but none of my nail cuts hurt her.

Maybe it was just because she was being handled by a stranger that made her be so good for the groomer.

She smells really nice now. Not that she smelled bad before or anything, but she was getting a bit of a doggy smell to her and I had been thinking of giving her a bath.

So you know what it ended up costing us? $4.99! Now that was a deal! I think they must have either typed in the grooming package wrong or gave us a bigger discount on the coupon. Chris paid the bill and I didn’t realize how little we’d paid until we’d left the store.

We’ll probably still do most of her grooming, bathing and nails here at home, but if I can get a deal every now and then we’ll definitely take her to the groomers again.

I don’t know if all the excitement of being in Petsmart and hanging out with groomers for an hour and a half tired her out or what, but she was sleepy all evening. I just hope that she doesn’t decide to stay awake all night now!

Snow covered pine branches

Mugo pine branch covered in snow

This is a photo of a dwarf Mugo pine branch that’s been dusted in snow. I took this photo a couple of weeks ago after a big snow storm came through town.

When we bought our house it came with three dwarf pines in large barrel planters at the front of the house. The planters are actually in the walkway between our house and our neighbors. Usually I decorate the pines each winter with clear LED lights and tiny red bows on some of the branches and they look quite lovely. I didn’t decorate them this year for the holidays, but that snowfall added a beautiful touch.

Do you have any plants around your home that look inviting after a snowfall?

Gardeners, Plant and Nature lovers can join in every Sunday, visit As the Garden Grows for more information.

Just a nice lazy day

January 12, 2008 by Tricia

Chris and I are just having a very lazy Saturday.

Actually this is the first weekend in a while that we’re both home. The last two weekends Chris went to Brantford to help out with things at his parents and to visit with his brother that was up from Chicago (last weekend).

We both slept in, much to our puppies disappointment. However we both needed it. She’s totally changed both our schedules since we got her and this was the first time we’ve both slept in since she’s been with us. So she ate her breakfast a little late this morning. That’s ok.

Since the weather was fairly nice and there’s no snow on the ground Chris went out and raked the leaves that had blown onto the lawn. So now our garden beds have a little extra winter protection and the yard looks so much nicer. The dishes and laundry also got done.

Wait … didn’t I say it was a lazy Saturday … hmmm seems we got a bit more accomplished than I thought. Still it’s felt kind of lazy as we’ve just been sitting back for the last few hours watching shows that we taped on the PVR.

Even our puppy’s been having a lazy day. She was in her crate a bit longer than normal today since we both slept in and she was in her crate when some of the yard and house work were done as well. After that we had a good play session … A play session with the puppy usually consists of playing ball with her for oh maybe two or three hours!

I guess we tired her out or she’s picking up on our “just relax” mood because she fell asleep on the couch at 9 pm which is much earlier than normal. She just woke up a few minutes ago and wanted to go outside to do her business and now she’s on the lazyboy chair looking like she’s about to fall asleep again. Maybe last nights puppy training class wore her out.

How was your Saturday?

I’m so cold!

January 11, 2008 by Tricia

I’m freezing!

The weather hear in Toronto continues to be above freezing and as a result our furnace isn’t going on as often.

You’d think that would be a good thing as we’re definitely saving money, but I’m finding that the house cools off just a little too much for me before the furnace finally warms up the house again.

It’s hovering just above freezing out at 4 Celsius … and it’s rainy and miserable outside.

Earlier today when I took the puppy out for a walk it was fairly nice out, but just as I got around the corner it started to rain lightly. Figures! I decided to keep going and it began to rain harder. Needless to say we had a brisk walk!

Since that time, perhaps two hours ago, I’ve been trying to warm up, but of course our furnace hasn’t come on so I’m still chilly. My sweater isn’t helping.
