I really need a holiday

March 7, 2008 by Tricia

I was just babbling on my other blog about how I need a holiday and soon! The weathers been so bad here this winter … I even think our snowy week managed to knock me out on Wednesday as I had a terrible migraine all day.

So … a holiday … Maybe we’ll take another trip to Las Vegas. We had a lot of fun when we were there last November. We’re a little short on funds this time round though so I’ll have to try to find a great deal or some cheap hotel Las Vegas if I can.

Ok I’m obviously still suffering from my migraine … they tend to make me talk funny and I guess type funny. I meant cheap Las Vegas hotels of course.

Do you have any suggestions for a hotel that won’t cost too much but that’s also nice and on the strip? We stayed in the Imperial Palace last time and I don’t want to stay there again.

Is Construction ruining your city?

March 4, 2008 by Tricia

I was watching the news last night and I was shocked to hear about how a church in protesting about how the commercial real estate near it is being used.

Like most people living in large cities I’m starting to get more than a little frustrated by all the construction going on all the time. There are so many condo’s going up in downtown Toronto it’s crazy. In fact, our whole shoreline has changed from the time I moved here in the 80’s. You used to be able to see the lake as you drove along Lakeshore Boulevard, but they might as well change the name of the street now as there are so many condos along the waterfront that you can barely see the lake from the boulevard anymore.

Still, if someone owns a property and if the city approves of the construction the owner should be able to build what they planned to build shouldn’t they? This one church doesn’t think so. The commercial property owner has plans to build two condo’s on the properties near the church and the church is protesting at city hall.

I guess I’m divided on this issue. On one hand I feel that there’s been too many tall buildings built in the city – particularly along the lake shore, but then as I said if the city is allowing the construction to take place I guess the builders have a right to put up their buildings.

The problem really lies with City Hall. They need to limit the number of new buildings allowed in each area of the city. They also need to preserve some of the areas that enhance our city and or make it unique – like our water front.

If you live in a big city how do you feel about the commercial properties that have been built in the last decade or so? Do they add to your city? Were they needed? Or do you think the new buildings are destroying something that was special about your town?

Strange stormy weather

March 4, 2008 by Tricia

Well we’re in for some more strange weather.

Yesterday we were supposed to have an ice storm but it seems to have missed the Toronto area. Thankfully!

I don’t think we’ll be so lucky tonight. We’ve got another ice and snow storm headed our way. It’s supposed to start sometime this evening and go through into tomorrow. I think there’s more snow coming over the rest of the week too.

Luckily it won’t be all that cold and with any luck whatever drops down on us will melt fairly fast.

Yesterday it really warmed up here. It got up to 12 Celsius (53.6 F)! So some of our huge snow pile on the front lawn and the five foot high snow banks on either side of our driveway managed to melt a bit.

Chris was enjoying the warm weather so much that he suggested we go to The Beach area and take Midnight for a walk on the boardwalk. It would have been her first time visiting the beach and seeing Lake Ontario. Unfortunately I was still feeling quite bad yesterday so I just wasn’t up to going. With any luck we’ll have another nice warm day like that soon and we’ll get to see our puppy frolic by the water soon.

I hope I’ll be able to say that all of our snow has pretty much melted away soon.

How’s the weather in your area?

What a bad week

March 1, 2008 by Tricia

I’ve had such a bad week it’s not funny.

I felt the need to put up a cute semi funny picture … better that than think about something that happened to me on Tuesday that still scares me!

I’ll probably write about what happened sometime over the weekend, but not right now. I’ll just say that something happened while I was walking my puppy and I thought that we were both going to get beat up! It kind of made me lose my faith in the thought that more people are good than bad.

I hope that you’ve all had a better week than I have!

Chionodoxa

I can’t wait until Spring arrives.

I was just saying on my gardening blog how protective all the snow we’ve gotten this year is for the garden, but still … enough is enough. I’m ready for nicer weather.

I miss seeing pretty flowers like these lovely Chionodoxa that bloom from mid spring to early summer.

Delicate Iris I also miss delicate miniature irises such as the one that I’ve included to the right.

Do you have a favorite spring flower? Perhaps tulips? Crocus’, Hyacinths, Muscari, snow drops, daffodils, iris, helebores, bleeding hearts or one of the many other kinds of spring flowers?

Do one of these flowers get your heart racing in anticipation of spring and the good weather to come?

Gardeners, Plant and Nature lovers can join in every Sunday, visit As the Garden Grows for more information. GTS participants remember to check in at As the Garden Grows each week so that we’ll know you made a new post!
