Garden awash in flowers

My garden is alive with flowers this week. Almost all of the rose bushes are heavy with spring blooms and other flowers like my Johnson’s Blue Geranium are going wild.

Here’s a close up of one of the tiny flowers:

Needless to say, Chris and I are enjoying the garden this year. The plants are healthy and many are quite a bit taller than they were last year at this time thanks to the heavy winter snow coverage they got a few months ago. I’m sure that protected them and helped keep them healthy.

Even the bumble bees are enjoying the garden. Here’s a little fellow collecting pollen from a tulip.

How is your garden doing this week? Is it full of blooms too?

Major thunderstorm – Crash, Bang, BoooooM!

June 13, 2008 by Tricia

Holy smokes! We’re having one of the worst thunderstorms that I can remember in recent years!

About 15 minutes ago we noticed that there was quite a bit of lightening outside. Unfortunately that’s when our Lab pup decided to ring the bell we have on our door to let us know she had to go outside to pee.

Since the storm was just starting I took her out, but it was kind of frightening. There was constant lightening and the thunder was only a few seconds apart which meant the storm was right above us.

Chris came outside too because we had a barbecue earlier in the evening and he had to close up the bbq.

Of course Midnight dawdled and we all ended up being soaked. She didn’t seem frightened of the brightly light sky or the thunder though – that’s a good thing.

Now that we’re inside the lightening and thunder is even worse. Midnights a little bit nervous now but we have the TV on and that’s dampening the sound of the storm a bit. As luck would have it she wants to go back outside. I’m not sure if she really has to relieve herself or if she just wants to see what’s going on outside – either way, we aren’t going back out there until the storm settles.

I just checked theweathernetwork.com and we’re under sever thunderstorm watches and tornadoes are even possible to the east of us.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we lose power! If we do I hope it’s not out for too long.

I just knew I should have taken pictures earlier today of all my roses that are blooming in my garden. I bet they’ll be destroyed by this storm!

Wish us luck!

A cluster of lovely red tulips

June 11, 2008 by Tricia

Wordless Wednesday

fringed red tulips

These tulips are long gone, but I couldn’t help wanting to show you how lovely a group of brilliant red fringed tulips look when a group of them are growing together in a garden bed.

These beauties made a lovely distraction as they were growing in front of several roses that were just growing their leaves as the tulips were blooming. Now the tulips are gone and the rose bushes are full of leaves and in the last few days the rose bushes have started blooming too.

The strangest thing happened last night

June 11, 2008 by Tricia

We had a knock at the door at about 2:30 this morning …

I had fallen asleep on the couch at about 11 pm, and Chris had gone to bed sometime after that. At about 2 a.m. I woke up – too hot because we didn’t have the air conditioning on and Chris had shut all the windows.

As it turned out Chris was awake too and he came downstairs to get some water and watch TV for a few minutes before trying to sleep again.

That’s when we heard a faint knock on the door. Or at least we thought it was a knock, but I also wondered if It was our new neighbors making noise in the house next door even though they haven’t moved in yet.

Chris got up and looked out the peephole and saw a skinny little man standing outside the door. He was saying something, but no matter how many times Chris said “what?” or asked him to repeat what he’d said we still couldn’t tell what he was saying.

Finally Chris decided to open the door. Apparently this guy is the brother of one of our neighbors. His sister was apparently on Vacation and he’d been downtown delivering wine to a bar in the Docks area when his van ran out of gas. He didn’t have any money and needed some to fill the tank.

Somehow he was on a bike. Where he got it I don’t know.

Chris pulled out his wallet and gave him 20 bucks. We had more money in my wallet but he didn’t have to know that.

I still wasn’t sure if his story rang true as I’d never seen him before nor heard our neighbor taking about a brother or anything.

He left saying he’d return in the morning with some wine for us (and hopefully the 20 dollars we’d lent him, although he didn’t promise that).

As of this moment – almost 5 pm, he still hasn’t returned and I have seen our neighbor that’s supposedly his sister … so I don’t think she was on vacation.

It was just so weird. Especially since I just wrote about how we don’t let strangers into our house. Well I guess we didn’t let the guy in, but we gave him money …

I’ll send Chris over to the neighbors later this evening when he gets home from work to check out the story.

Colorful tulips!

We’re currently having a heatwave and thunder storms here in Toronto. My flowers are blooming, but once the weather gets done with them I’m not sure that they’ll have any petals left!

Here’s a look at some tulips that were blooming up until the last week or so:

orange tulips

As well as this fiery red fringed tulip –

I’m afraid the heat and rain ruined their blooms, but like I said the roses are blooming. There’s always something to enjoy in my garden.

BTW yes this post is a day late. I had yet another eye allergy on Saturday that left me with both eyes painful, blurry and sensitive to light for two days. I wasn’t able to post or do much of anything. Hence the late post. Sorry!
