What a beautiful day in Toronto

March 6, 2009 by Tricia

It was just lovely today here in Toronto. Warmer than most early to mid-Spring days! By 3 pm it had reached 18 Celsius (64 F)! We’re supposed to have above zero weather up until next Wednesday or so, but it looks like today will have been the warmest – unless something changes over the next few days forecast wise.

It was far too nice a day to stay inside. Earlier in the day I looked outside at the garden, there were still a few small patches of snow in the shady areas, but it was melting fast. For a few minutes I even contemplated doing a little yard work – tidying up the garden, but it’s far too early. I’m sure we’ll have some freezing weather before the end of March.

So … Midnight our young Labrador Retriever got the most benefit from the nice day. She got a nice long walk with me in the afternoon and then when Chris came home from work we all went out for a very long walk. All in all, Midnight probably got two hours worth of walks today.

In the winter when there’s lots of snow Midnight likes to roll in the snow. We’ll be walking along and she’ll jump on someone’s lawn or in a snow bank and either roll around in the snow or do a faceplant and slide her body along the snow as I walk along side her. I try to make sure the snow is clean where ever she does this. It’s pretty funny to see the faceplant slide. I’ve seen her push her body like that through the snow for 10 feet or more. I’m sure anyone watching must wonder what the crazy dog is doing.

There’s very little snow now – only in really shady areas. That didn’t stop Midnight though … she tried to roll in the wet and sometimes muddy grassy areas and even attempted her faceplant slide. Of course I stopped her each time as I didn’t want to bring a dirty muddy dog back into the house. LOL

She tried to roll in the wet grass a few times when Chris and I took our evening walk, but it was just too wet and muddy.

We did something different for our evening walk with Midnight. When Chris came home he told me that our hospital was finally getting two new Restaurants. Al we’d had before was the hospital cafeteria and a coffee/ quick food area in the lobby that was run by the cafeteria staff. The new restaurants or food places are Subway and a Panzerotto Pizza. The Subway shop isn’t open yet but the Panzerotto Pizza had opened today.

So we walked to the hospital and while I stood outside with Midnight Chris went inside and ordered us two Panzerotto’s (They are like folded fried pizza’s, yummy, some might call them Calazones?) and some chicken wings. The place was really busy and I ended up standing outside with Midnight for over 45 minutes! It was probably busy because it was just after 7:30 so a lot of staff were getting off work and visiting hours were about to end so maybe some of the visitors were getting food before going home too.

Since there were a lot of staff getting off work I wasn’t too bored waiting for Chris to get our food. I talked to a few nurses and other hospital staff that I knew. One ER nurse that I used to work with had just received a new Bedat watch for her birthday. Man was that a nice watch!

After walking home Chris and I sat down to eat our food. I’m soooooo full now. That Panzerotti was filling! I don’t think I’ve had one for several years and now I know why … they make you feel so stuffed! In fact the panzerottis were so filling Chris and I only had two wings each so there’s still 10 left for us to have with tomorrows dinner.

How was the weather in your area today? I’m pretty sure most of the Northern States and Canadian provinces had fairly nice weather today.

Helped save a baby raccoon last night

March 4, 2009 by Tricia

Last night as I was about to take our Lab outside to do her final business of the evening my husband, who was upstairs, called out to me that I’d better wait to go out because there were two people loitering around on the corner across the street. So I went upstairs to peek out the bedroom window at them.

Chris and I live in a nice neighborhood which luckily seems to have few robberies and very few undesirable people wandering around … but occasionally when I’ve gone out late at night they’ll be a drunk person wandering around (there are some bars within walking distance) or occasionally a group of teens that sound rowdy (more so in the summer). For the most part the neighborhood is peaceful and makes me feel safe though.

Anyway … when I went upstairs to see who was hanging out on the corner I saw a guy standing by what looked like a bulky bag on the ground. He was standing near a black car with it’s engine on. Then I saw a woman get out of the car. She walked over the “bag” on the ground, bent down and started petting it.

That’s when I began to think that it might really be a dog lying on the sidewalk that had been hit by a car. Chris took a closer look and said it was a small raccoon. So I went downstairs to get the address and phone number for the Toronto Humane Society. I know they are open 24 hours and they do some wildlife rehab. We’ve taken injured birds there in the past.

Chris and I then went outside to talk with the couple who were standing over the young raccoon. Well actually Chris walked over to them while I took the dog out to do her business. Then when Chris came back over to our side of the street we went in to find a box for the raccoon and left the dog in the house.

The couple said that they’d stopped their car because they saw the raccoon weaving across the road. It was likely hit by a car. Another neighbor had come out before we did to give them a blanket to wrap around the poor little thing … hence the “bag” look that I’d seen from an upstairs window.

The raccoon was drooling and dazed. There was some blood mixed in with the drool so it might have been hit in the head maybe by a cars bumper or tire? I couldn’t see the rest of it’s body as it was wrapped in the blanket.

The other woman and I moved the raccoon into the box to get it off the cold sidewalk. It was docile as we moved it.

The couple had called the Humane Society and were referred to a wildlife rehab place out of town. So they were standing there watching over the raccoon that was probably only a few months old and waiting for the wildlife people to show up. Apparently the place is located West of Toronto so it was going to take about an hour for them to arrive. I’m not sure how long they’d been out there with the raccoon before we noticed them, but we went out at 11:50 pm and came in at 20 after 12 so they’d been waiting more than a half hour just from the time we saw them to when we went inside.

We suggested that they just take the raccoon to the Humane Society. The River street location is open 24 hours. They agreed since they had no idea when the wildlife people would show up. They did call the wildlife place before they left with the boxed raccoon in their trunk.

I felt bad for the little raccoon. It was so dazed. I have no idea if it’s injuries were something it could recover from or not, but at least the raccoon would get the care it needed at the Humane Society.

Now I know some of you are probably wondering why five people in total would help a little raccoon since they are pests in urban areas … I guess we’re all just soft hearted. I can’t stand to see an animal in pain.

Hopefully the raccoon will recover from it’s injuries. If it’s still alive it’s probably in the hands of the wildlife rehabbers by now and hopefully, if it gets better, it will be released somewhere outside the city.

One of my favorite Spring flowers

We still have about a month to go before Spring will finally be here, and given the weather we’ve had the last two days it might feel like a long wait! With the windchill factored in it’s currently -16 Celsius or only 3.2 F! Brrrr

Since Spring will soon be here and I’m trying my best to ignore the cold I thought I’d show you one of my favorite spring flowers. Now I think most people think of tulips when they think of Spring. I do too, but for me … Peonies are probably my favorite Spring flowers! Too bad I have to wait until late Spring -almost summer before mine will bloom!

Here’s a lovely almost white Peony called Peony Pecher:

This peony produces large double petaled blooms each June. They are just a little smaller than a bread plate oh and the smell … they have that lovely light peony scent. I just adore these flowers!

Last year I planted three new peony plants in my garden. One is in the front flower bed and two are in my planted boulevard – so if they survived the winter I’ll have 6 peony plants in total! Hopefully I’ll also have an abundance of flowers!

Do you grow Peonies?

A lovely day for a walk

February 26, 2009 by Tricia

Midnight, my Labrador Retriever, and I took advantage of the nice weather earlier today and took a long long walk.

We were supposed to have a warmer than normal day that was filled with snow, rain and then showers, but to my surprise we didn’t get the bad weather – only the nice warmer than average temperatures. Not that 6 Celsius (42 F) is all that warm, but for February, especially after a very cold January, it sure felt nice … Spring-like even.

Midnight in kitchen

I haven’t been walking Midnight as often as I should since I haven’t been feeling all that well the last several months. Oh, Chris walks her – usually twice a day, but if I can walk her at least once a day as well all the better for her. It makes our evenings much more peaceful if we have a well exercised and tired dog!

For my own sake I should be out walking her every day as well! It’s good exercise and Midnight tends to pull on the leash (although she’s getting a little better and not dragging us around as much lately) so it’s a fast paced walk if I want to keep up with her!

We walked for 45 minutes this afternoon and then when Chris came home from work we all took another 35 minute walk.

Midnights still up and begging for a rawhide chew, but I expect that she’ll be tired out and want to sleep soon …

don't bug me I'm sleeping

I took this photo a few weeks ago when Midnight was napping on her favorite chair … I don’t think she liked being woken up to a camera in her face.

So … fellow dog owners, do you walk your dog several times a day or have a yard that your dog can get burn some of it’s excess energy off in?

I’m tired of freezing when I go to bed

February 22, 2009 by Tricia

I’m starting to get sick and tired of our bedroom being freezing cold when I go to bed. Our master bedroom is the coldest room in the house in the winter. Changing into my PJ’s each night is quite the experience as I end up covered in goose-pimples! LOL

We live in an older house. It was build in 1927 and as a result it’s probably not quite as warm as newer homes. Our bedroom is upstairs at the end of a long hallway so that likely makes it harder for the cold air that builds up in the room to escape. Remember cold air goes down (as in down a staircase) and warm air goes upward.

When we moved in we had some duct work done including adding a cold air vent in the master bedroom. I’m sure this has helped to make the room warmer than it would have been without the cold air return vent, but it’s still pretty darn cold in the dead of winter.

We did have an electric heater that we’d use in the bedroom for the first hour or so after we went to bed, but it stopped working in early December and we haven’t replaced it yet. After suffering through a very cold January (February has been warmer here, but it will get colder soon) I think it’s time to buy a new heater.

I’m going to watch for an electric heater to go on sale and hope that I can get one for a good price soon.

Our last electric heater was a tall standing one that oscillated to move the warm air around the room, but I’ve been look at this Honeywell Cool Touch heater and it looks like it might fit the bill. The description says it will heat a large living space so it might be too powerful for our small master bedroom.

What we’d normally do with our old electric heater would be to turn it on when we’d come upstairs to use the washroom and wash up before bed so that it would take a bit of the chill out of the room before we’d have to go in there to get changed. It also had a timer on it so we could set it to run for only an hour or so. That would ensure that the room was warm as we were trying to fall asleep, but we usually didn’t need it to run all night. Not once the bed was warmed up anyway.

Do you find the the upstairs of your house is a lot cooler in the winter than the rest of your home? Do you use a heater in your bedroom or do you just suffer the cold?
