I hate January Bills

January 19, 2011 by Tricia

I hate this time of year. By this I mean, paying all the end of the year and holiday bills from the previous year. Not only that, but to add to it, I just found out that January 17th is supposed to be the bluest day of the year – probably for the same reasons that I’m complaining about. I guess the 19th is my bluest day.

I don’t like December and January money and bill wise because they’re so hard on the credit cards. Not only do you have holiday expenses if you’re buying presents for loved ones and or buying food and party supplies if you’re entertaining, but if you’re like me you also get some extra bills. For some reason The College of Nurses decided a long time ago that all nurses in Ontario had to renew their nursing licenses every December so that’s yet another December bill for me to pay.

I did manage to keep all the expenses down at Christmas time so we didn’t have a lot of extra bills thankfully, but there’s still more money going out this month than I want there to be.

Don’t you just hate paying bills? Yeah, I know it’s part of like, but I don’t have to like it.

Now I’m a super Smeller? Thanks Migraines

January 19, 2011 by Tricia

I had the strangest thing happen to me earlier today. I was filling out a form and for a few minutes I forgot the name of my street.

Yeah … I really did. I couldn’t believe that I couldn’t think of the name of the street that I’ve lived on for close to ten years!

I know why it happened though. Last night I increased my dose of Topamax (my migraine medication) to 100 mg and as I’ve mentioned before that medication comes with all kinds of wacky side effects, and memory issues are just the tip of the iceberg. LOL Even my typing and spelling for this post is way off. I’ve had to correct just about every sentence.

Tomorrow I have an appointment with a new doctor, an endocrinologist, and since it’s a first visit and I have to fill out forms and provide a lot of information about my medical history and current meds ie Synthroid dose, pain meds and probably even the chromium supplements that I started earlier this week, I think I’d better get organized and write them down tonight just in case I forget them tomorrow just like I did my street name earlier today. Man that was weird.

I still can’t believe I forgot my street name!

Another weird side effect that I was sure was coming from the migraine medication is that I’ve become what I call a “super smeller“.

I started to notice this side effect in early October when I started taking Zyban to quit smoking and I thought it was the Zyban that caused it … but I stopped taking that medication in November and well … I can still smell things way tooooooooooooooo good. I mean … I live in a semi-detached house (built in the 1920’s) and suddenly I can smell when my neighbors are cleaning their home (just in the last two weeks)?

I know I’ve mentioned how I think my dog smells now. She has this skunky smell and lately I can smell her breath. Everyone else still says she’s one of the only dogs they know who’s breath doesn’t smell, but to me when she’s panting her breath can stink up a whole room … yes … that’s how hypersensitive to smell I am lately.

I did catch a break this week – for the first time in months! I spent yesterday enjoying normal smell. I know it sounds weird. I m sure the whole last half or maybe this whole post sounds strange (the wonders of migraines and migraine medications?) but this is my life lately. Anyway .. yesterday was my first normal smell day in ages and you don’t know how nice that was.

I saw my family doctor yesterday and I told her that I had a normal sense of smell and she said she really thought it was my migraines that was causing the hypersensitivity.

It’s true that migraines can cause people to be extremely hypersensitive to smell … but if that’s true that would mean that since October or perhaps even earlier, I’ve been in a constant state of migraine that’s only just broken … that’s terrible! I actually do believe that’s possible because ever since mid-September or so I’ve had these flashes at the side of my eyes (I call them Roman Candles going off). the flashes happen every five minutes or so taking turns on each of my eyes (yes another very weird thing I’m living with). My neurologist sent me to an Ophthalmologist in early November to make sure that there was nothing wrong with my eyes and that the Tomapax wasn’t causing Glaucoma or anything, and now both of them have come to the conclusion that my eyes are perfectly healthy so what I’m experiencing must be migraine auras … yes constant 24/7 migraine auras …. so why not constant 24/7 several months long hypersensitivity to smell too? I have had headaches and migraines during this time period as well, but not constantly.

Yeah .. my life has taken a weird turn … yes it has. Hopefully the increase in dosage of my migraine medication will turn off all of the migraine side effects the painful ones and otherwise. I’ll let you know .. I’ll also let you know if I forget any other strange things.

Trying to find the energy …

January 18, 2011 by Tricia

Yesterday I wrote about how tired I’ve been over the last two or so months. Well … my doctor doesn’t seem to know how to help me or even want to help me. I saw her today and it was a frustrating appointment. I guess I’ll have to wait until my appointment with the endocrinologist on Thursday and hope that that doctor has some ideas as to what’s making me so tired.

In the meantime … if I can muster up some energy … I want to try to get out my elliptical machine that’s just gathering dust in our spare guest room. Since I’ve been so tired over the last two months i haven’t been moving all that much. Maybe if I start moving it will wake me up? hey it’s worth a try? Plus working out on the elliptical is a good fat burner too.

I’m just hoping that I’ll snap out of this tiredness. It’s just awful. I’ve never felt this way before at all. As I said yesterday, if I let myself I could just close my eyes and fall asleep pretty much anytime and I’m never like that at all.

The streets are deserted – freezing rain

January 18, 2011 by Tricia

It must be very slippery outside right now because there’s very little traffic going by my house.

We’ve been having freezing rain, sleet, snow, rain and so on all evening. When my husband came home from work it was just starting to rain and we really had to go out to the grocery store so we quickly got in the car and hit the road before it started getting too slippery out.

I really didn’t want to go out because the weather was getting bad fast, but we needed milk and a few other things. So we were running around the store as fast as we could and then when we get to the cash registers there’s only two open because they’re installing new Symbol LS2208 scanners. Luckily because of the weather there weren’t too many people in the store so the lineup didn’t take too long.

Just as we were getting home it started to snow! I’m glad we made it home before the weather really started to get bad.

How’s the weather in your area? Are you getting freezing rain tonight too?

I’m exhausted

January 18, 2011 by Tricia

It was just a little over a month ago that I went to see my family doctor about how tired I had been. I thought it was my thyroid. I was just so tired, I could pretty much fall asleep any time of the day if no one bothered me fora few minutes.

I was also becoming more and more intolerant to cold weather and my skin was becoming drier. I also started gaining weight in late November and early December even though I wasn’t eating any more than usual. In fact I was probably eating less than usual. Remember all that weight I lost in September and October? I gained it all back in about three weeks! I even glanced at some hydroxycut reviews! Between the extreme tiredness, sudden weight gain and other symptoms I was seriously worried.

I’d had a thyroid test in November and my levels were within normal range … I only have half my thyroid and I take synthroid – so my doctor didn’t think there was anything going on with my thyroid … she though instead that I was suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder. I don’t really believe that since my symptoms (ie cold intolerance) don’t really fit with S.A.D. at all. She strongly suggested that I go out and by a therapy light and start using it.

I didn’t really agree with her. The blood test that she was going by was done the previous month and something might have changed, but I bought a therapy light the very next day, with money we don’t have. I had to do something to help myself. It’s a blue light – a Philips Golite and I’ve been using it for over a month now. I do feel slightly less tired but I wouldn’t say that there’s been any huge improvement.

I still think there’s something going on with my thyroid. The medication that I’m taking for my migraine might be affecting the blood tests (lab results) for my thyroid tests according to some research that I’ve been doing, so what looks like normal levels might really not be.

I’m seeing my family doctor tomorrow. She’s a bit of a ditz and I have a feeling she won’t have much to say about the light not working for me and me still be extremely tired. the only good thing is that I do have an appointment later this week with an endocrinologist because I have to have the growths on the remaining portion of my thyroid checked out by a specialist so I’ll bring up my extreme tiredness with her and see if she’ll do some more thorough testing instead of just the most basic test that my family doctor did.

I’m just exhausted these days … honestly, I think I could sleep 16 or 18 hours a day if I let myself and that’s really not like me at all. Normally I exist on very little sleep.
