Saddam Dead!

December 29, 2006 by Tricia

Sadam was hanged at 9:55 pm EST, sunrise in Iraq. this happened less than 30 minutes ago.

Digg this story – http://digg.com/politics/Saddam_Hussein_Dead_3

Update: 4:25 a.m EST December 30th – We ended up watching CNN for hours. In fact as I sit here writing posts for the next few days I still have CNN playing on my TV. I really wasn’t watching in the hope that I would seen Saddam hanged. I would never want to watch something like that – no matter how evil a person might be.

At 4:10 a.m. CNN finally was able to show some video related to Saddam Hussein’s hanging. The video had just been aired on Iraq TV, and quickly dispersed throughout the worlds news agencies. CNN showed video of Saddam being led into the gallows, shackled and handcuffed, and wearing what appeared to be a dark suit coat. He refused the head covering that was offered to him.

The gallowmen, what do you call those people anyway?, were wearing what appeared to be ski masks and looked very much like men dressed to rob a bank or a store. One of the men placed the head gear around Husseins neck, perhaps to protect his skin, and then placed the noose over his head and tightened it around his neck. The video freezes, as it apparently did on Iraq TV as well, with Saddam standing in position on the gallows looking straight ahead.

He looked resigned to his fate – but neither brave nor defiant – just resigned.

I’m still deciding how I feel about his hanging. Certainly he was an evil man who harmed and killed many. One commentator on CNN said that he might be responsible for killing as many as 2 million of his own people. I do think he might have been hanged too soon. I would have liked to see him stand trial for his crimes against the Kurds.

When Chris and I lived in the apartment we had a very nice Kurdish couple living above us. Both of them had lost many family members to Saddam when he gassed his own people. The Iraqi couple that lived above us left the country shortly after Husseins attack on the kurds. They missed their family, living and dead, terribly but new that they needed to make a life for themselves away from their homeland. Perhaps moving from the country was the only way they could make a good life for themselves after that.

It’s for my former neighbors, and other Iraqis that I know that I wish Saddam had stood trial for the majority of the wrongs that he’d done.

How do you feel about his death?

A Chance Meeting

October 16, 2006 by Tricia

Guess who I ran into – almost literally – today?

I mentioned in an earlier post that I had a doctors appointment this morning. I went to see a family doctor that specializes in pain management, who I’ve been seeing on average once a month since last January.

I walked into the building, took the elevator to the second floor and as I was walking towards my doctors office I saw a very familiar looking lady walking towards me.

It was Adrian Clarkson, Canada’s former Governor General.

I was looking at her thinking “Is that the Governor General, yeah I’m sure it is.” and she was looking at me, and I’m certain she knew I had recognized her. I nodded my head and went past her towards my doctors office because that is what Canadians do. We acknowledge celebrities, or otherwise well known people, but we generally don’t get all excited and mob them. We go about our business and let them get on with theirs.

Now, I’m sure the Americans, and possibly others from the many other Countries, that view this site might not know exactly what a Governor General is, so I’ll tell you:

Role and Responsibilities of the Governor General

The Office of the Governor General, Canada’s oldest continuing institution, is a thread that ties Canadians together. From Samuel de Champlain in 1608 to Viscount Monck in 1867 to Vincent Massey in 1952 to today’s Governor General, the institution of Governor General dates back nearly 400 years.

What is the Governor General’s position in Government?

Canada is a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy. This means Canadians recognize The Queen as our Head of State. Canada’s Governor General carries out Her Majesty’s duties in Canada on a daily basis and is Canada’s de facto Head of State.

Like many other democracies, Canada has clearly defined the difference between the Head of State and Head of Government.

The Governor General

  • represents The Queen who is the Head of State
  • is appointed by The Queen on the advice of Canada’s Prime Minister

The Prime Minister

  • is the Head of Government
  • is the leader of the party with the most support in Parliament

What does the Governor General do?

The Governor General’s role is built on four major themes:

  • Representing the Crown in Canada
  • Representing Canadians and Promoting our Sovereignty
  • Celebrating Excellence
  • Bringing Canadians together

In a nutshell, the Right Honourable Governor General of Canada (currently Michaëlle Jean) is the closest thing we have to Royalty in Canada. I’m sure for Americans my chance meeting today would have been similar to bumping into one of your former presidents.

Actually, from time to time I work on my families history, and I believe, in fact I’m almost certain, that I might be related to one of Canadas 13 founding fathers – i.e. Canada’s Fathers of Confederation. Therefore, I might also be, in a manner of speaking, Canadian “royalty” as well.

Now isn’t that neat?

Friendly Fire?

September 6, 2006 by Tricia

(Wordless Wednesday below this post)

Canadian Troups have taken a lot of loses in Afghanistan in the last few months.

This past week has been particularly bad. I hate to hear about our brave soldiers losing their lives while fighting with the enemy or because they were ambushed by the Taliban, but at least they went there knowing that that could happen. However when I hear that our soldiers were killed or wounded due to friendly fire I get really angry.

PANJWAII, Afghanistan (CP) – The sun lifted into a clear sky with the usual haze of dust at 5:30 a.m. Monday while two U.S. A-10 Thunderbolts swept down the narrow Arghandab River valley, blasting away at supposed Taliban positions.

A young corporal from Newfoundland glanced toward the heavens, noting one aircraft’s sickening low-pitched moan as it shattered the ground with a 10-second burst of about 300 shells the size of pop cans.

It’s far from the rat-tat-tat usually associated with a machine-gun.

“It’s like the noise a whale makes when it runs into a ship,” said Cpl. J. R. Smith from Mount Pearl, N.L.

An hour later, the soldiers found out more than 30 Canadian soldiers, including Pte. Mark Graham who died, were the unintended targets at the bottom of that strafing run. A giant Chinook helicopter was needed to ferry out all the wounded.

How can something like this happen?

In earlier reports it was stated that the Canadian troups were aware that the US fighter planes would be passing over within a half hour. If the Canadians knew the Thunderbolts would be passing by, why on earth did the US pilots not know that the Canadians were right below them? How did they mistake the Canadian troups for Taliban Insurgents?

I don’t understand. I want some answers as to how something like this could happen. 30 injured, 1 dead (a father, an Olympic relay runner). Of the 30 injured only 5 are expected to return to duty.

I don’t mean to offend any Americans that might be reading this. I’m sure you (an American) would be upset if other UN troups accidentally killed or injured your soldiers, right? With all the high tech equiptment available these days you would think something like this would be impossible.

In other news, I’m sure that just about everyone has heard that Steve Irwin passed away. He’s the Crocodile Hunter if you don’t know him by his real name. As a reptile owner and lover, some of his antics used to upset me. I thought he took too many risky chances with wild animals, and that he might have at times accidentally encouraged others to do so, and in doing so this would end up giving reptiles and even worse name in peoples minds. But he was an animal lover, an educator and he had a passion for life that most people never attain. He’ll be missed.

One of my favorite memories of him was from an episode where he was sitting in a sandy area with a small bearded dragon. He was busy telling the view audience that beardies are usually friendly and that they either don’t bite or rarely bite when the little guy jumped up and bit him on the nose. It was hilarious.

You’ll be missed Steve!

And to all the people who have been posting jokes and making fun of his death. Shame on you.

Black White

April 17, 2006 by Tricia

Has anyone watched the new television series Black. White. ? It’s been airing here in Canada on Sunday evenings. I’ve seen two episodes so far.

If you haven’t heard of this program it’s about two families. One black couple with their teenage son, and one white couple with their teenage daughter. For a period of 6 weeks, I believe, they all live together in one house. A crew of make up artists work with each family to change the color of their skin from white to black, and black to white for various outings. When they are together in the home they are without the special effects make up, but when they go out in public they take turns experiencing life in the other families skin color.

The show is an experiment to see if each family can experience what life is like for the other family. It’s an interesting show, not quite as enlightening as I hoped it might be, but there are still several episodes to be aired.

My take:

I think they could have cast the white family better. I like the teenage girl. She seems to really want to understand the experiment, truly tries to experience life as a black teenager when she is made up to appear as one. The parents on the other hand, openly state they haven’t spent much time with “black people” although the father mentioned playing golf with a work buddy who is black. They say things to the other family that come off as sounding naive and racist. At this point neither of them have felt that they have experienced any racism when they have been out in public made up to appear as black people.

In the first episode that I watched the white couple is made up to look like a black couple and they attend a discussion panel with other black people to discuss racism that they have experienced. The man jumps right into the discussion, even though this is the first time he’s appearing as a black man and discusses what he’s experienced when he’s been called a n*****, stating I believe that he just reacts like “why would you call me that?” and would not get angry at all. Somehow I don’t think this would be a normal reaction at all.

The black couple seem a bit more realistic about the whole thing. I’m not that sure that they are that open to learning and experiencing life as white people. The man seems more open to the experience but seems to see racism in the way people talk to him in everyday conversations and even in the way they move to the side when he walks by white people on the street. From what they have shown on the show it’s possible that he is perceiving racism that isn’t always there. I haven’t seen his wife on an outing dressed up as a white person on her own yet, but in the way she talks and acts in the home she seems to have more of a wall up than her husband. The son pulls off looking white best, but from some of his statements he doesn’t appear to want to try to “pull off” being white when made up to look white.

Again in the first episode the black couple is made up to look white and they attend a discussion panel that talks about racism. I can’t recall them doing anything at that discussion that stands out but I was amazed to hear what some of the white participants attending the discussion had to say. The most startling statement was from a man that said, with apparent dismay as if knowing his reaction was very abnormal (or at least I hope it is!) “When I shake hands with a black person I always feel like I have to wipe my hands on my pants afterwords.” I just can’t imagine anyone feeling that way.

Make up wise- I don’t think any of the family members really pull off looking black or white 100% successfully. They appear to when they are out in public … but they just don’t look right to me. I think the black family looks slightly Hispanic, and the white families features are much too Caucasian to pull off anything but perhaps a light skinned black.

Has anyone been watching this show? If you have, how do you feel about it?

Whatever your color or race – Do you feel that you’ve experienced racism? If you have experienced racism, has it been subtle or outright “I don’t like you because of your race” racism? And what Country have you had your experiences in?

I’m white. I don’t believe that I’m racist, however depending upon how you view the world I suppose it’s possible that some of the things I say, the way I say them or my actions could be taken as being racist by a person with a very negative view. What I mean is that if I interacted with someone that saw almost everything as racist then yes they might perceive something I said as being racial.

I have experienced subtle forms of racism though. I am part Native Indian. You probably wouldn’t know if unless you looked at me very closely, or saw pictures of my other family members. It upsets me when people talk badly about native Indians, sometimes trying to bring me into the conversation and get me to agree with them. Most of the time they don’t realize that I am part native Indian and when they do they make excuses “well I didn’t mean you, you’re not like them”.

I’m currently living in what is viewed as the most diverse city in the world- Toronto, but I didn’t always live in such a diverse city. I originally came from Ottawa which was, at the time of my childhood, a very white city. I think there were only two black students in my lower school. I remember my first day at kindergarten, the very first child that I met happened to be a little black girl. Of course I know now that she was black but I don’t think it really occurred to me when I was little, all I remember is that she was the first little girl I met on that scary first day of school and she wanted to be my friend- and friends we were.

Perhaps becoming friends with Faith on that first day of school helped form my view on race. Either way, I don’t react to people by the color of their skin. I try to form my opinions of anyone that I meet by what they say, how they behave. By their actions not their color.

Depending on what kind of comments I get I might delve further into this topic. Please keep your comments informative, and civil. Derogatory comments will be removed.

Signs, Signs, Everywhere a sign

March 11, 2006 by Tricia

Rant mode:

What would you think of a political candidate who puts a sign in your front yard without asking you for permission first?

I’ve seen this happen TWICE this week! Once to me, and also to a few of my neighbors- from two different political candidates running in our provinces by-election.

Earlier in the week- let’s call in it Monday – I saw a car moving slowly by our house. It pulled up into a neighbors driveway and a guy jumped out with some signs for one of the political parties. He walks up to my closest neighbors house and starts putting the sign NOT in her lawn but her front flower bed. My neighbor barely speaks English, is very elderly, and always looks at us quite perplexed when we say we are going to vote (whenever there’s been some kind of election going on that is). So I know she didn’t give them permission to put the sign in her yard. I also knew that she would be upset when she discovered it. Then he went to the lady beside her house and put a sign on her lawn and kept moving down the street that way with the car following. We removed the sign for our neighbor.

I was thinking- there is no way my neighbor said yes to a sign, and I’m pretty sure that a whole street full of people all side by side wouldn’t ALL allow signs – most of them have never had political signs on their lawn in the past and definitely not for the party that was being promoted.

Then yesterday I get up and look outside, check my mail, and I notice a little green piece of paper in my door. I pull it out and take a look and it’s from one of the other parties- one we supported in the federal election this past January, one that we did allow to put a sign up at that time. The note was thanking us for allowing them to put up a sign and had a number we could call if we wanted it removed.

What’s this? It sounded like something off the internet where by signing up once you are automatically “opted in” for anything else that comes later, and you have to manually opt out on your own if you don’t want to participate anymore.

When did political parties start taking on sleazy internet type methods of getting people to participate or accept their junk?

Why would they assume that because I was promoting one party in the federal election that I would back the same party in a provincial election? Yes sometimes people stick with the same party both federally and provincially, but not always. Hey, traditionally in Ontario where I live the elected provincial government party has almost always been the official opposition party of the federal government. When the same party is running both the province and the nation it usually works out badly for all – see last two years of Canadian politics for reference.

I come from a very political family. Actually I come from a historical political family. My great great grand-father was one of Canada’s 13 founding fathers of confederation. Other members of my family have also been involved in provincial and municipal politics. But I’m a bit of a black sheep. I’m sure I vote quite the opposite of most of my family members. I don’t always vote for the same party. I vote for whichever candidate I think will do the best for the area that I’m living in first and move on from there. If the best candidate for my area is going to ruin the city, province or nation, I go for the next best candidate.

So, that’s another reason why I’m fuming over this sign that is in my yard. I’m not necessarily voting for that candidate, AND they didn’t ask me if they could deface my property. That’s a big strike against this candidate- and for the other candidate who had signs put up on my neighbors lawn without her permission too. I still have to decide who I’m voting for- I’ve gotta do my research and read up on all the people running for election. So, in the end I might end up voting for this person who ASSumed they could put a sign on my lawn without asking, but they’ve ticked me off and I can’t guarantee anything right now.

Oh and did I tell you the sign isn’t a little one? No, it’s huge! It’s not pounded into my lawn either. It’s attached to the metal trellis on the front of my house with computer ties! I have to go out there with some scissors to remove the darn ties and get rid of the sign.

Odd Mode:

Speaking of signs …

I’ve been intrigued by one of the residents of my street for some time. This person lives several blocks East of me. For the last year or so, whenever we pass by the house, I’ve noticed this persons front porches windows. I’ve noticed them because more times than not they are totally plastered with handwritten signs and drawings. We are always driving when we pass the house and it’s at a tricky curve in the road just past a traffic light, so it’s difficult to stop right in front of the house and just GAWK like I really want to do. LOL

I really have to stop and take pictures some time. As I’ve passed by in the past I’ve noticed the words Murder, killed, blood, rent and just long rants. It’s like this person gets creative and writes out long rants at whatever he or she is mad about that day and then tapes all the pages onto their front porch windows and door. I’m pretty sure the person has a screw or two loose to be doing something like this. I do have pity for his/her neighbors though- it would be hard to try to sell the house next door with the neighbors strangely posted thoughts plastered all over the windows and sometimes lawn next door.

I will get a picture sometime- I’m sure you’ll be as amused and intrigued as I am when you see it. 🙂
