News anchor tells drivers to push cars home if they have to

September 13, 2012 by Tricia

I was watching TV earlier today and when the news came on I saw a report that I found kind of funny. I really don’t think I’ve ever heard a news anchor tell drivers to push their cars home rather than buy gas ever before – have you?

The reason why she was suggesting that drivers not buy gas today is because gas prices sky rocketed the other day and now prices are set to drop by 6 or 7 cents a litre once again on Friday (tomorrow). Here’s a photo ..

News anchor tells drivers not to buy gas but to push their cars home - hilarious!
“Wait until Friday to visit the Gas Station – Push your car home if you have to, Gas prices across the country are expected to drop by more than six cents a litre Friday morning.”

It’s all because of Hurricane Issac .. remember him .. he passed through parts of the US almost two weeks ago? Yeah, even though there was no damage to major oil production areas prices are going up and down as a result. I don’t understand .. especially when we have our own oil and gas here in Canada. Strange.

Have your gas prices been fluctuating too?

Election Night in Canada

October 14, 2008 by Tricia

Well it’s election night here in Canada.

Chris and I are watching some of the early returns to see which party is in the lead. It was a tight race between the Liberals and Conservatives at first, but as the count moves west it seems the Conservatives are taking the lead.

I found that deciding who to vote for was very hard this time round. I’m sure many Canadians feel the same way. I believe the last three governments have been formed with a minority, which of course means, to me at least, that the majority of the voting population isn’t happy with the choices we have for leaders and political parties (and their agendas).

I’m pretty sure that this election will turn out yet another minority government.

The leader of the NDP party, Jack Layton, is the MP for my area. In the last returns that I saw for my voting region it looked like the Liberal leader was in the lead, but leaders of Federal political parties rarely lose their seats so Layton will probably win for this area, but judging from results coming in nationwide, the NDP will be in third or fourth place overall.

Note that in the rare instances that I discuss politics on this blog I never mention which party I’ve voted for. I keep my feelings about my political affiliation private in part because I come from a very political family and as a result I know how volatile politics can be. I don’t want that for my blog.

I will say that I want a leader that stands by the political agenda that he (she) set in their political campaign. Not one who says one thing and then changes their mind a week after they’ve been elected. That’s happened far too often in the last decade or so!

Anyway … this isn’t a political blog. I just wanted my readers in other countries to know what’s going on here in Canada this evening.

I still find it funny that we Canadians can hold a whole election – campaign and all in just 37 days, while it takes our US counterparts close to two years to reach election day. I don’t know how you guys do it. A month of political advertisements on TV, flyers on my porch and campaigners calling and knocking on the door day after day is enough!

Nothing on TV tonight but election debates

October 2, 2008 by Tricia

Wow … there’s no shows on TV tonight after nine because of the Federal election debates. I say debates because I’m in Canada and most of our channels are being taken up by the American Presidential debates AND our Canadian Federal election debates.

I guess we’ll probably watch some of the Canadian election debates. I mean there’s not much else on!

At this moment were just watching old sitcom reruns on a US channel. The really strange thing is that we’re seeing purely American commercials … I’m not used to that. Most of the US station we watch somehow mix Canadian commercials or I guess North America wide commercials into their programs. Strange to see commercials for NC health insurance when I’m in Ontario!

Are you watching either of the election debates (Canada or US)?

I usually don’t watch them as I don’t feel I get that much out of them or well .. I guess the truth is I’m usually even more disappointed by the opponents that pleased with them by the end of the debate.

Prison Break is back!

August 25, 2008 by Tricia

Did you know that the two hour season premiere of Prison Break is on tv right now?

I’m sure some of my American friends are watching the Democratic Convention, even some of my Canadian friends too since it’s broadcast here as well … but I hope you’re taping the premiere!

We are. We’ll watch the show in a little while once we’re both done blogging and answering all of the email that’s piled up in our inboxes. Oh and after I’ve paid the bills! We have a big car insurance payment to make by the 30th of the month. God I hate bills … well, paying them!

Chris and I didn’t really watch the first season of Prison Break, but when the writers strike started last year and all there was on TV were reruns we began watching Prison Break since it was a show that we hadn’t seen before and we both got hooked.

I must admit that I’m looking forward to next week. A number of shows that we like to watch are starting up again on September 1st and 2nd and others will be starting a little later in the month. I’m happy to see that many of my favorite shows are starting up earlier than normal. Maybe it will be a nice long TV season considering last years was so short thanks to that writers strike.

Are you a fan of Prison Break? What shows are you looking forward to seeing when they start up again next month?

Oops! Uhm … as I said above I was taping the show and hadn’t started watching it. If I had … well .. I would have realized it was the two hour season finale from last season, not the premiere. (((Blush))) The season premiere is September 1st (I believe). Sorry if I had anyone madly searching the channels for the premiere!

Study shows black children pick white dolls over black dolls – What’s wrong with this picture?

February 21, 2007 by Tricia

I just watched an absolutely shocking video on Ria Rodriguez’ blog AfroRomance.

In the 50’s just prior to the lifting of segregation of blacks a study was done using black children as the test subjects. Each child had two dolls placed in front of them – one black and one white. Unsurprisingly for the times when questioned which doll was their favorite, or which was the good doll the children overwhelmingly chose the white doll.

Now, a high school student, Kiri Davis, who happens to be an aspiring film maker has made a short 8 minute documentary in which she did the same study over again with young black children. You must watch the short ABC video on Ria’s Blog. I’d love to hear your opinion, or better yet leave a comment for Ria as well.

The results of her study are shocking! The black children again chose the white doll as being the good doll, the “better” doll, the one that they’d most want to play with. Why? One child replied “Because she’s white”.

What does that mean when young black children in the year 2006/07 still think that a white doll, and likely therefore a white person is better? Are there still such racial issues out there that I as a white person am not seeing or feeling as much as black people and others who are not white are experiencing?

Now I live in Canada, and I know this is not a perfect Country by any means, but I do think that there are less racial issues here in the majority of cities than there are in the USA. I’m not saying there aren’t any at all, but I think there are less issues to deal with here than in major US centers like LA, New York and Chicago.

When I was a little girl I had many dolls to play with. Do you know which one was my favorite? It was a little Eskimo doll. Why? Well I am part Native Indian and this was a doll that looked the most like part of my heritage. Which again is why I’m totally astounded that the young black children in this short documentary didn’t identify with the black doll as being most like themselves and therefore “better” than the white doll.

All I can think is that it’s not necessarily true racial issues that have made these young children state that the white doll was better than the black doll, but the media influence that is all around them today. The commercial world is still a white world. Toys made for children are overwhelming based on white society. Television shows, commercials and even video games are based on white culture.

What would happen if this study was done with young white children? Frankly I think the results would be the same. Why? Well, the white children would be identify with the doll that is most like themselves and their culture. Plus, I think, that considering todays media and commercialism is based on white society that would also influence their decision.

Am I wrong?

What do you think? Lets get a discussion going about this.
