An apologetic thief

August 3, 2012 by Tricia

I’d imagine that a Guelph Ontario couple is going through a range of emotions this week. Why .. well .. earlier this week they discovered that their house had been robbed.

A door screen had been damaged when the thief broke into their house and some items were stolen before the thief left the house. One of the items was the mans X-box and another item was a camera.

The family didn’t even know they’d been robbed until they awoke the next morning and found a green bag outside their front door with the stolen items inside it along with $50 to repair the screen and a note of apology for the robbery.

“I can’t put it into words how sorry I am,” the thief explained in the typed note, adding they were having financial trouble.

“This is the first and last time I will ever commit a crime… Please find it in your hearts to forgive the stranger who harmed you.”

The note explained the thief felt “ashamed” and would perform at least 15 hours of community service to “partially atone” for the crime.

In the news story that I saw the police said that they’d still have to search for the thief and charge him or her if they’re found as a crime was committed however I imagine that if that really was the first and only crime the person every committed and the fact that they returned the stolen items and showed remorse they might get a lighter sentence. As for the home owners they seemed relieved to have their items back even though they hadn’t realized they’d been stolen and they just seemed surprised that the person who’d robbed them had returned what they’d stolen.

Only in Canada – eh?

I need a real vacation

August 3, 2012 by Tricia

I would love to go on a real holiday. I haven’t been on a true vacation for oh … years! I just realized that yesterday when I was talking to someone about my sister and we were talking about “future plans” and I said something about how my sister and I always talk about taking a vacation together and we never do. I mean – we’ve been talking about going on a cruise or a vacation for about 15 years! I think it’s about time we do!

I’ve been so stressed in the last couple of weeks and just in the last few days my stomach is killing me. Maybe it’s the stress or maybe it’s the Crohn’s rearing it’s ugly head. I don’t know .. either way, if it settles down I was thinking that maybe towards the end of August I might try to get away for a week. I was just looking at a site that lists panama city beach house rentals and I was thinking that if my husband and I and maybe my sister and her boyfriend or maybe another couple went on holiday together renting out a beach house would be a wonderful idea. It would be a holiday that wouldn’t cost all that much, yet we’d be on or near the beach and in a touristy area with lots of things to do. I think it would be perfect.

I just have to talk my husband and sister in to taking some time off to go on a trip. My husband doesn’t really like to travel so maybe he won’t go .. we’ll see .. Hey someone has to take care of the dog anyway!

Thankful for the rain

August 1, 2012 by Tricia

Is it hot enough for you?

This has been a hot dry summer for the most part in many areas. Here in Toronto we’re used to having a fairly hot and humid summer but we normally get quite a bit more rain than we’ve had in the last two months.

I’m thankful that we’ve had some rain in the last week. We’ve actually had two extremely good rain storms in the last three or four days. I’m sure my garden is very happy now with all the moisture.

Actually the rain we received in the last few days was accompanied by thunder and lightening so I know my plants were really happy. Did you know that when there is lightening it puts free nitrogen into the air and the plants just suck that up and that’s one of the main reasons why you see plants have a huge spurt of growth after a lightening storm?

Gaillardia Flower

Oh yes … I’m going to have some very pretty flowers in a week or two! Thank you stormy days! I never thought I’d be thankful for a storm. Believe me, I hate thunder. You’d think I’d dislike lightening but it’s the thunder that I hate the most. It’s the sound .. so I really don’t like it all that much when we have thunder storms, but I know my garden needs the rain and all the goodness that a storm brings. Particularly when it’s been so dry for the last several months.

How has the weather been in your area? Has it been warm and overly dry in your city too? I just remembered that last week they actually banned fires in the city. I don’t know if that ban is still on now that we’ve had some rain, but that’s how dry it’s been.

The bone scan results are in

July 31, 2012 by Tricia

I can’t believe how fast July has gone by. It seems like July only just started two weeks ago and here it is the end of the month. I’ve been so busy this month it’s just gone by so fast!

I haven’t been able to personally do much because my hand is still healing. I have no idea when my left hand will be back to normal or if it ever will. Yes it’s that bad.

The results of my bone scan are in and well .. there’s nothing definitive but there are some findings that are interesting. The hamate bone in my left wrist apparently has swollen bone marrow. Go figure. I guess that’s why the outer left side and top left side of my hand is still swollen and very tender.

The bone scan also showed that there was activity in the ulnar region of my left wrist (outer wrist) which corresponds to one of the areas I’m having pain .. but interestingly it also showed that there is a lot of activity in the joints of BOTH of my hands! So I may have early signs of arthritis or some kind of pain syndrome. Sigh. Well .. everyone in my family seems to have arthritis so that’s probably what it is .. but man .. I use my hands to make a living. This sucks!

I use my hands to write, to type, to create art, to photograph and to heal (I’m a nurse) … It’s been awful having my dominant hand useless for the better part of two months and now I’m learning that both of my hands might soon be quite painful sometime in the future. I certainly hope that the bone scan is wrong!

I saw the hand doctor last week and she thinks it’s going to be a few more weeks until that bone in my hand is healed. Hopefully healed. My thumb is still sore as well. It’s very weak and painful. So I have pain on both sides of my hand and it’s weak, crampy, achy and just not anything close to the way it should be. I wish I hadn’t fallen on that ladder!

Preparing for House Guests

July 15, 2012 by Tricia

I’m trying to get ready to have house guests again for a couple of days. My brother-in-law and nephew should be here sometime tomorrow and I think they’re staying until at least Tuesday, maybe longer.

The main purpose of the visit is to help with some renovations of our living room and dining room but of course it’s always nice to see family. They were away this weekend because my nephew was trying out for an OHL hockey team – hopefully he made the team. They’ll have to drive back to Chicago, which is where they’re from later this week.

My brother-in-law is a cigar smoker while an occasional cigar smoker. Mostly he smokes cigarettes. I think his latest brand of cigars is Rocky Patel which is one I’ve never heard of before but I guess he he brought it over from the US. Since this is now a non-smoking house he has to go outside and smoke. So far he doesn’t seem to mind that rule. I just hope it’s not pouring rain tomorrow like it has been today otherwise he may not like that very much.

Well, I suppose I should try to relax as the next few days will be quite hectic since we will have visitors and we will be doing renovations. I also have an appointment for another test on my hand. This time it’s a bone scan still trying to figure out what’s wrong with my hand. It’s a little better than it was but it still has a long way to go it seems.
