Trapped in the dark

April 16, 2007 by Tricia

Unbelievable! Our power went out!

I was sitting there in total darkness. Ok, well I was, but I went and found some candles so I guess I was sitting in candle light as I waited for the power to return.

The house was so silent it was eerie. Chris went to bed early because he has to wake up at 5 a.m. to get ready for work. He did wake up when the power first went off though. You see it flickered a few times before failing and this triggered my radio alarm clock and made it blast music for a few seconds. I guess he might have also woken up because his c-pap machine that he must wear each night for his sleep apnea would have stopped working too. No more air forcefully being blasted into his nose. I’m sure he didn’t mind that it was off. LOL

I was in the middle of writing a big article for an advertiser. I had actually spoken with the advertiser via email on and off for a few days and we had decided that my article of his site going up on a Monday might be best because I sometimes have a peak in site traffic on Mondays. Hmmm I hate it when things I promise don’t work out – especially if they are due to circumstances that I have no control over. Luckily the power came back on after an hour and I’m busy working on the post again. I did lose what I had written. That was a drag!

All I wanted to do was finish writing and posting my article and then I was going to go to bed so that I would actually get up at a decent time for a change. Now, I’m sitting here trying to re-write what I had written and hoping that it comes out as good as it did the first time round. So much for actually going to bed early for a change.

The power was on just up the street. The street lights and traffic lights were working in that area, but here it was only darkness. The power failure was just from the corner of my part of the street and eastward. I’m sure the hospital, if was effected had to go on back up generator power. I used to hate when the power would go out at the hospital. All the doors would automatically shut, and the fans that circulated air would stop and it would get so warm.

That’s one nice thing about living so close to a hospital. We are on the same power grid as the hospital so when the power goes out in the area or in the city like the big blackout of 2003, they work to restore power to this area first. Well, I mean any areas with hospitals or areas that offer vital services to the public would be first on the list of course. Luckily the power doesn’t go out here very often.

Naturally I wasn’t able to access the Internet either. Our wireless router was off so our Internet connection was down. I wrote the bulk of this post, and have just now changed the tense from present to past, in my email program while using my laptop. Worried the whole time that my laptop battery wouldn’t last the length of the power failure. If the laptops battery had failed I wouldn’t have gotten anything done.

I’m so happy the power came back on … I just hope it stays on at least until I’m done the article that I promised I’d have already posted by now.

Waiting for Spring

April 15, 2007 by Tricia

Join Green Thumb Sunday

Join

trees at beach

This is a January picture of Toronto’s famous beach boardwalk. The tree’s bare, leafless and waiting for spring. The boardwalk – sunny on a beautiful winter day with a few brave souls daring to come out and explore the beauty of the lake on this cool day.

If anything, that bright winter day was probably nicer than today – a Spring day, is supposed to be. It will be cold and rainy. We might even get some snow.

Much of Europe is unusually warm, and so is western Canada. Why isn’t it warming up here? I want to see my spring flowers bloom.

Gardeners, Plant and Nature lovers can join in every Sunday, visit As the Garden Grows for more information.

Something for nothing

April 13, 2007 by Tricia

Why do so many people expect something for nothing?

I had a very bad experience a couple of weekends ago. I’m not going to go into all the details. I’ll just say that I provide a free service to people and over the last few weeks I’ve gone around and asked for a little more feedback and participation and it just seems to have all backfired on me.

I actually got quite mean spirited comments and emails that basically wonder how I “dare” ask them to participate. Well … duh .. it’s one of the rules of the service that I’m providing.

It’s upsetting. I felt like shutting down the service that I’ve been offering for approximately 10 months, and when the comments started to get a bit nasty I even started to think, to hell with it. I felt like shutting down that website too.

The service that I’m providing is absolutely free yet it actually costs me a little bit of money to provide. Don’t I have a right to require that people follow the very lax rules?

I’m in a very people are assholes kind of mood as I write this. Hopefully that changes.

Then yesterday, one of the mailing lists I run broke out into flames over a non-list topic. It took me into today to settle the list down and get it back on track again. This again is yet another free service that I provide as I run four mailing lists.

On another forum that I was visiting between naps and bleary eyed wakefulness I theorized over something that might affect the sites terms of service and had my words twisted around by two people, one of them an employee of the company I was discussing. It made me feel like leaving that forum all together. I don’t want to do that though as I learn of interesting things on that site, get some help with my sites when I need it, and I also offer some help and advice to others from time to time there too.

I actually got up and checked my calender yesterday to find out if there was going to be a full moon. Honest. I mean when I work in the ER you wouldn’t believe the crazy stuff that happens on Full Moon nights. I figured that perhaps that phenomena had invaded the net too.

I get really frustrated when things like this happen. I put a lot of myself into the things that I do, and many of the things that I do I’ve created with the benefit of others in mind. I often don’t get all that much out of these things for myself (the mailing lists in particular). So when people start turning things around, blaming me for things, or begin to take advantage of the situation it just makes me so angry.

How about you? Do you ever do things for people and end up feeling like you’ve been taken advantage of? or perhaps like my experience yesterday, have a bunch of things that go wrong all at once?

Stop cyberbullying

March 30, 2007 by Tricia

Did you know that BlogHer has decided to official make this day, March 30th – Stop Cyberbullying Day”? This has come about in response to a woman, Kathy Sierra, who is being cyberbullied.

She’s been getting death threats on her blog and others, apparently A List bloggers have joined in and have posted her personal information in various places on the net. Information such as her address, social security number and so on.

I read Kathy’s blog the other day and she doesn’t know if these threats are real or if it’s just bullying. Either way, it’s changed the way that she blogs- her comments are turned off now, and how she lives too. She’s canceled speaking engagements and other plans in favor of staying home where she’s safe. She may not even blog again. That’s how deeply this cyberbullying has affected her.

This is just disgusting. I can’t believe that people would do something like that to another blogger.

I know how I feel when someone has left a nasty comment on one of my sites. This has been very rare, but it happens. It probably happens to just about everyone at some point. However, to have nasty images and posts spread across the net, and threatening comments left on her blog takes it to a new level. It’s terrible.

Thinking about a career change

March 29, 2007 by Tricia

Since I’ve been stuck at home due to my illness I’ve had a lot of time to think. Considering that I’ve been spending so much time on the computer and have always had an interest in design and graphics I’ve toyed with the idea of taking some courses.

Everything I know about computers, networking, writing code, designing sites and creating graphics has been self taught. I’ve been teaching myself for a long time of course. LOL Since 1990 or 91.

I’m a nurse, but given my illness and the fact that I don’t seem to be getting any better I may have to face the fact that I might not return to the ER or even nursing.

I guess I still have some thinking to do on the subject of course. I could take some computer network courses, or perhaps even do something completely different and study interior design. Yes, with all the home renovations, planning and designing you could probably say I have a strong interest in interior design and might do well with that too if I were to go in that direction.

I think I’ll Contact Collins College and get some information on their courses. It can’t hurt to do a little research just in case I decide to change my career.
