Do you ever wonder …

June 28, 2007 by Tricia

When I was making breakfast for my husband I went to pull his bagel out of the toaster oven with my bare hands and of course it was hot so I dropped it.

As I touched the bagel and quickly pulled my hand away I yelped “Hot!”

Do you ever wonder why we yell out what’s happening when we’re shocked when it would be obvious to anyone watching?

Everyone does it.

If someone were to touch you and their hand was freezing cold you’d probably yell out “cold, brrrr!” Right?

But why?

I think it’s weird … normal because we all do it occasionally … but strange too.

Another thing that gets me is when people bump into something and they say sorry. They didn’t bump into a person … no, they bumped into a chair, or a wall and they still say sorry. I don’t know, maybe that’s a Canadian thing … but it’s funny as hell!

I’m not saying that I don’t say sorry to walls. I’m pretty sure I do, but why?

What other strange things can you think of that people do for no good reason when it’s obvious what happened?

Entertaining friends at home with a friendly game of pool

June 27, 2007 by Tricia

When my husband and I used to live in our apartment we lived in a very active area of Toronto. We were within walking distance of night clubs, fantastic restaurants, small retail stores that sold everything from gift items to beautiful antiques, and a no less than four bars that had pool tables.

If we weren’t out with friends, our friends were at our house often enjoying one of my gourmet dinners. We enjoyed entertaining. We still do but we do less entertaining lately.

Now, I’m not a very good pool player. I believe it has something to do with me being left handed, but I could be wrong about that, I just might be bad at it. Still, I enjoy playing, and I enjoy watching my husband play. He’s very good.

When we lived in the apartment we’d go to one of the bars that had pool tables approximately once a week. We’d walk over with a couple of friends, have a few drinks and play a few games. It was fun and I have good memories of those times.

There is a pool hall and a really nice bar with pool tables within walking distance of our house, but I’d say we only go out to play pool once a month or less these days.

As I’ve said before Chris and I are in the process of renovating our home. One of the areas up for renovating is our basement. It’s not finished at all. We’d like to make the basement into a rec room or den which may or may not contain a bedroom.

When we’ve talked about what we want out of the basement when it’s finished one of the things that’s come up a few times is my husbands desire to have a pool table. He wants to be able to play darts too but the ceiling is so low it’s dangerous! I think a pool table would be fine down there though. Our friends would certainly enjoy it if we had a pool table since our home is still considered an entertainment hub amongst our friends.

I’m discussing pool tables right now because I’ve just visited BostonTables.com and they have a lovely selection of well made pool tables. Take a look at this beautiful model:

Boston Tables specializes in Pool Tables, Game Tables and accessories. They are actually a national company that operates in multiple States. They ship throughout all of the United States via their Columbus Ohio distribution center.

If you’ve ever considered getting a pool table for your home it might be a good idea to take a look at their selection right now as they are having a sale. Almost all of the pool tables that are shown on the page that I linked to earlier are priced under $2000.

If Chris and I were to get a pool table I’d certainly want one of a similar design as the image above. Isn’t that gorgeous? I love the shape of the legs and the beautiful wood that’s been used. It would actually suit the style of our 1927 house and the way I’ve furnished some of the rooms.

It’s too bad that we don’t already have a pool table. One of our old friends will be staying with us this weekend and some of the best times I’ve had with this guy have been while playing pool with him. He’s quite the character.

Actually we’re going to have guests all summer long. Chris’ brother and one of his boys are coming from Chicago the in a week, and in early August his other two children will be coming to stay with us for a couple of weeks.

Now wouldn’t it be great to have a pool table to entertain our guests?

It’s certainly something fun to do, and staying in rather than going out to bars to play pool would save some money too. Actually come to think of it, with the money that you could save by going out less often and entertaining at home instead the pool table would practically pay for itself in no time.

Hmmm the idea sounds more and more appealing doesn’t it?

If this heat keeps up I’ll be at the beach!

Wordless Wednesday

We’re having a heat wave here in Toronto. Yesterday it got up to about 41 Celsius with the humidity … that’s about 105 F. Today is supposed to be just as hot, but we might get a thunder storm too.

When it’s this hot in Toronto, when we get thunder storms they are always severe! The last big one we had a week and a half ago knocked down trees all over my neighborhood. Actually my neighborhood was the worst hit in the city! You can read what I had to say about that if you’d like.

Anyway, I was thinking, if this heat keeps up I might just head to the beach. It’s usually several degrees cooler down by the water, and of course if I took a dip I’d cool off.

I posted this photo because I imagine that the beach will look like this later today as the storm starts coming in! I actually took this photo sometime last summer.

If I don’t end up going to the beach today, perhaps I will later in the week when the temperature is supposed to be a little more comfortable. If I do I can always join in a volleyball game at one of the many volleyball nets that the city has set up for us to use.

How are you surviving the heat?

Esnailer lets you send real letters to people

June 26, 2007 by Tricia

More than likely some of you reading this are too young to remember the days before the internet and email came into our lives, but for those of us who had to find other ways to communicate with friends and loved ones before email became so popular letters and phone calls were the main modes of communicating with others who lived far away.

It is nice when you receive a letter in the mail, or a card from someone that’s just writing to say hello, isn’t it?

I think getting a letter or card from someone these days is much more special now than it was 15 or 20 years ago. Do you feel that way too?

If you want to send formal correspondence to your friends and loved ones, but perhaps don’t have quite as much time as you’d like to do this, ESnailer.com has come up with a great way of sending real letters to people.

Just go to the ESnailer.com website and start writing a letter to a friend or loved one. EnSnailer will print your letter, tuck it in an envelope and place a stamp on it and send it off to the recipient via regular US postal mail free of charge.

So it’s just like sending an email but the person that you’ve written to will have the thrill of receiving an actual letter.

Heat Wave

June 26, 2007 by Tricia

I’m not going outside … I’m not going outside …

It’s 34 Celsius right now outside, but with our humidity factored in it’s 41 Celsius. That’s almost 106 F. The temperature is still going up too.

If it was just heat I think I could take it, but the humidity just makes a hot day absolutely unbearable.

We’ve got the air conditioning on inside so I’m comfortable, but I’m sure if I went outside for a few minutes I’d end up feeling terrible.

Ever since my Crohn’s started to act up really badly two or so years ago I can’t seem to take drastic temperature changes. It’s like my body doesn’t adjust to cold or hot temp changes very well.

I do have to keep peeking outside though. My elderly neighbor – she’s about 89, keeps going outside. I saw her sitting on her porch knitting a while ago.

Elderly people do not regulate temperatures all that well either. They often don’t sweat much so the built in self cooling protection our bodies have doesn’t work on the elderly. That’s why it’s so dangerous for them when it gets hot outside like this.

My neighbor is apt to water her garden in the middle of the day when it’s this hot, or pull out her lawn mower and cut the grass! So every half hour or so I get up and look out the front and back to make sure she’s not doing something stupid. I mean, if it’s too hot for me it’s way too hot for her!
