Sun setting on Lake Ontario

Last year we had a big family reunion and as part of our reunion adventures we took a Toronto Dinner and Boat cruise.

Just before dinner Chris and I decided to take a walk on the deck and it turned out to be perfect timing. We were able to get a good view of the city scape with the CN tower and the sun slowly setting behind it.

A few minutes earlier the scene was more like this:

Just as our dinner was ending the water got a bit choppy. Now I love canoing but I’ve never spent much time on large boats and as the boat rocked in the waves I think I turned green! That was the only downside to the evening. I felt better eventually … but it was iffy for a while. Anyone else have motion sickness?

Missing out on another weekend away

May 9, 2008 by Tricia

Chris and I were supposed to go to Brantford again this weekend. It’s Chris’ father’s birthday and there’s also a big party honoring him on Saturday night for all the years he put into training kids to play hockey.

Well … as I said we were supposed to go. Now it will just be Chris.

You see Chris’ father booked a bunch of hotel rooms for all the family that’s expected to descend on Brantford this weekend. We had been planning to bring our Lab puppy with us. We were going to bring her crate so that she could be kept out of trouble when we were out of the house at the party.

Now that we’re supposed to be staying in a hotel with the rest of the gang we can’t bring our dog. It’s not a pet friendly hotel … so that means I can’t go. I’ll have to stay home with the dog. With all the people and the chaos that surrounds Chris’ family it was going to be difficult enough bringing the puppy. Staying in a hotel (especially a non pet friendly one) would be worse.

I had wanted to go. I was also curious as to whether Walter Gretzky might show up at the banquet as he used to coach hockey along side my father in law so chances are good that he might be there. He’s a friend of the family too. I’ll make sure Chris brings a camera with him just in case.

Spring in bloom – Tulips, Hellebores and more!

I’m so happy with my garden this Spring. We certainly didn’t enjoy the long cold and extremely snowy winter that we experienced, but as I predicted my plants did.

I still have to clean up some areas of the garden and the roses that are already leafing out well need some of their dead branch tips trimmed off, but I expect when I’m finished fully surveying the garden that I’ll find that I didn’t lose any plants this year. That might be a first!

Lets see … other than only a portion of my tulips in bloom right now (I have early blooming, mid spring blooming and late spring blooming bulbs planted in all my garden beds for an extended Tulip showcase), I also noticed the other day that one of my Hellebores has leafed out and that it’s also flowering:

The Hellebore flowers blend in with the plant. In the photo above you can see at least two rosey pink hellebore flower buds and one flower in bloom to the top right of the photo.

When I purchased this Hellebore a few years ago I’d also bought another species, but I think that one died after a year or two. It might not have been as hardy as this one appears to be. I’m going to have to figure out how to propagate this plant as I’d love to have hellebore’s growing in at least two other areas of my garden. They’re such a pretty spring flower. Poisonous though – so I’ve got to be sure my dog doesn’t go near them.

How did your garden fair after the winter many of us had in Northern provinces, states and countries? Did you find that your garden is more lovely than usual?

BTW if you enjoy looking at spring flowers and plants don’t forget to see what’s growing over at my gardening blog and also check out some pretty flowers over at my You are In My World Now blog.

A lovely spring weekend in the city

white Tulips

Such a dreamy picture of some of the white tulips that I grow in my garden …. It’s the perfect time for a gardener to be dreaming of tulips and other spring flowers too. The weather is finally beginning to warm up and all the plants in my garden are beginning to come out of their dormant state.

I was just saying on my gardening blog that it’s such a beautiful day here in Toronto that I expect to go outside this afternoon and tidy up my garden. Hopefully I don’t become obsessed and stay out there for hours!

We’d also like to take our dog out for a good walk today.

Last weekend we went to Cherry Beach twice (although Sunday was super cold and windy, especially at the beach, so we ended up going to The Brickworks for our walk). It was beautiful! Yesterday we ended up going to The Beach and walking on the boardwalk. So today … if I can pry myself away from the computer and then from the garden, we’d like to go to Cherry beach again.

I just love living in Toronto. The weathers fairly nice most of the year (not this past winter!) and there are so many things to do. I love it. Plus now that we have a dog we have more incentive to get out and enjoy what this great city has to offer.

What have you been doing on this beautiful spring weekend? Working in the garden or doing something outside as you enjoy the great weather?

Chionodoxa

I can’t wait until Spring arrives.

I was just saying on my gardening blog how protective all the snow we’ve gotten this year is for the garden, but still … enough is enough. I’m ready for nicer weather.

I miss seeing pretty flowers like these lovely Chionodoxa that bloom from mid spring to early summer.

Delicate Iris I also miss delicate miniature irises such as the one that I’ve included to the right.

Do you have a favorite spring flower? Perhaps tulips? Crocus’, Hyacinths, Muscari, snow drops, daffodils, iris, helebores, bleeding hearts or one of the many other kinds of spring flowers?

Do one of these flowers get your heart racing in anticipation of spring and the good weather to come?
