Your Body And Daylight Savings

November 25, 2012 by Trish

The autumn equinox has come and gone and, as we turn back the clock for daylight savings time we begin to notice that the days are getting shorter and we often find ourselves driving home in the dark. Its sinking in that the summer is over and it’s time to settle in for the long winter.

For people who live in the Northern Hemisphere, the change in autumn means more hours of darkness and colder weather, which keeps many people indoors. This can contribute to depression and a host of sleep disorders.

Any change in your sleeping pattern can be difficult to deal with and can even encourage the development of sleep disorders, although the change in the fall seems easier because that is when you are actually gaining an hour as opposed to in the spring when your body will feel like an hour has been taken away. Here you can just go to bed early and catch an extra hour of sleep.

Or you could do what most people likely do and use the extra hour to stay up later. Just figure out what is most comfortable for you and do it. If you do choose to stay up though be careful not to overdo it. You may take in stimulus like TV, email, or video games or whatever.

These distractions can easily cause you to stay up way past that extra hour you get when we fall back and you’ll end up coming into work more sleep deprived than ever. Again, the key is to find what works best for you, don’t think that there is some set rule about how to deal with this.

Maybe you don’t want to even set your clock back until the next morning when you wake up. Then you can wake up as normal and set the new time and hang out for an hour before work, or before whatever it is that you will be doing for the day.

People who have existing sleep disorders may be adhering to a frajile sleep schedule that helps to minimize symptoms. In that case you would want to continue to adhere to that schedule as closely as possible.

So waiting until the next morning to reset your clocks may work well for people with an existing sleep disorder. Other than that I would suggest that you take every opportunity to get in sunlight during the fall and winter months if you live in a part of the world that will be getting reduced sunlight. Artificial light can even be used if necessary.

Recognize any depression symptoms that you may be feeling and seek out medical assistance if necessary. Also, try to maintain a consistent exercise and sleep routine once the time has switched over. Be aware of your body and the ways that the changing seasons and the changes to your routine can effect it.

If you can do that you should be in for another cosy winter – break out the eggnog and fruitcake!

How To Stress Less This Holiday Season

November 23, 2012 by Trish

The holidays are intended to be a joyous time spent with friends and family. But for many Americans, the holiday season can actually be a very stressful time of year. For instance, holiday shopping and trying to fight those awful crowds. The constant pressure of meeting expectations of friends and family. Putting up with those not-so-nice in-laws…you can understand why the holidays may not be the most wonderful time of year for many people.

This holiday season, it’s important for us to learn to how to relax and enjoy the holidays. We can do this by focusing on ways to reduce our stress rather than encourage it. That being said, here are five ways to better relax this holiday season:

Follow a strict budget

Too often we want to go beyond our means to impress those we love with lavish gifts. Rather than exhausting our bank accounts or racking up our credit cards, try to stick to a strict budget. Purchase gifts that come from the heart rather than the wallet. After all, isn’t it the thought that counts most at Christmas time?

Drink responsibly

The holiday season can bring out the social drinker in all of us. However, with excess drinking can come stress and anxiety. it’s normal to feel anxious or nervous in social settings like holiday parties. However, try to limit the number of drinks you have in an evening. This will allow you to make more responsible decisions throughout the holiday season.

Extra travel time

Traveling during the holidays can be a nightmare—just ask the McCallister family who left poor Kevin at the airport right before Christmas. Airports, train stations and buses are all crowded with eager folks trying to make it home for the holidays. Rather than fighting the herds of people, give yourself plenty of extra time to get to and from places you have to go.

Make time to exercise

Exercise is a proven stress reducer. The holidays may be the busiest time of year, but it’s important to take at least 20 minutes a day to exercise. This will give you the opportunity to recharge your batteries and de-stress from holiday pressures. Don’t have time to hit the gym? Go for an evening stroll. Exercising also helps to combat those extra calories typically indulged during holiday meals.

Be thankful

The holidays can become stressful due to family differences, work obligations and relationship woes. This year, take advantage of the holiday season by reflecting on all the good things in your life. Do this by being thankful for the things you have rather than what you do not have. The best gift of all is the one we get to share with our loved ones.

Follow these tips and you will be well on your way to enjoying the holiday season. After all, the holidays should be the most wonderful time of year. So, before you begin to feel stressed or overextend yourself, take a minute to remember what the holidays are truly all about: spending quality time with those we love most.

Top 3 Tasty Breakfast Quick Fixes

November 22, 2012 by Trish

Rise and Shine

Whether it is related to energy levels, obesity, or the sort of mood we are in on a day-to-day basis, we are regularly told of the importance of eating breakfast. Despite us all knowing this, a large majority find themselves preferring the extra fifteen minutes in bed rather than getting up in time to have breakfast.

Thankfully, enjoying a little bit of an indulgent lie-in doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to skip breakfast. Before you go getting any ideas, it doesn’t mean that you can stop off at the drive thru or get someone to pick you up a greasy sandwich on the way into the office.

Instead, why not plan ahead a little and try out some of these ideas?

Slow Cooking

If you have got a slow cooker, then one great idea is to make porridge and cook it overnight. This can work brilliantly in either a large or small appliance depending on how many of you there are in your household. Invest in some reasonably sized cardboard cups and plastic spoons so you can eat it on the move if you need to.

Nuts or raisins are great additions to early morning porridge, while cinnamon is known to help kick-start your metabolism first thing, so add some either overnight or simply stir in before you leave.

Get Fruity

Many of you will already pick up an apple or banana on the way out of the door, however you can make things a lot tastier by preparing a fruit salad the night before. Simply leave it in the fridge so you can again take it with you, and perhaps have a small pot of yoghurt or a bag of nuts on hand if you want to add extra early morning nutrition.

You could always change this up and pre-prepare a traditional lunch salad for breakfast, with chopped peppers, tomatoes, and cheese, although this isn’t for everyone first thing in the morning!

Breakfast Baking

Obviously, you aren’t going to wake up and have time to bake, but you could always spend the weekends making tasty muffins or other breakfast cakes. Simply keep them in a container and use them throughout the week, or if you’re feeling extra generous you could take them all to the office at the beginning of the week in order to help dispel the Monday blues.

Think of the fun you will have and the money you will save against buying the same thing from the coffee shop on your way into the office!

What Not To Eat During The Holidays

November 21, 2012 by Trish

The holidays are all about family, friends and food. Whether you prefer the appetizers, main course or desserts, there are plenty of temptations to go around during holiday parties. Rather than avoiding certain dishes that you think are bad, here are some of the worst holiday food offenders and why you should stay away from them.

Eggnog

Before you add any liquor, eggnog is still one of the worst holiday drinks you can consume. With the primary ingredients consisting of milk, cream and eggs, it’s no wonder this holiday drink can help add on some serious pounds. Instead of drinking eggnog, look for the traditional hot chocolate. With about one third of the calories, hot chocolate is definitely the better option if you’re looking for a hot winter drink.

Crab cakes

Appetizers can be found all months of the year, but you’re the most vulnerable to consuming more than you should during the winter months. Crab cakes are one of those appetizers that are difficult to resist, regardless of the season. In the case of the crab cake, you’ll find imitation crab meat bound in mayo, rolled in breadcrumbs and dropped into a pot of boiling fat. This results in a fatty ball of calories that equals more than three dozen shrimp. That’s right, more than 36 shrimp. With that said, you might want to swap out those crab cakes for some shrimp cocktail. With fewer calories, you can eat more of them and be more satisfied.

Cocktails

You can’t get through the holidays without having a few nights where you overdo it with the holiday cocktails. Truth be told, some cocktails you can get away with drinking if they’re diet or low in sugar. The classic gin and tonic, however, is not an exception. Tonic water actually contains more than 20 grams of sugar per eight ounce serving, which puts it on the same level as any other lemon-lime soda. If you’re still looking for the bubbles and alcohol content, drink some champagne. It contains one fourth of the sugar and it makes you look way classier.

Beers

Not into liquor? That’s fine, because holiday parties are stocked with beer as well. The problem with beers in the winter is that they’re generally darker brews and heavier, such as porters. While these beers might warm you up, they’ll also make you heavier. When you can, opt for the lighter beer. It generally has fewer calories and still tastes great.

Meat

It’s finally time for the entree and you have your choice of chicken, turkey, or beef. Which one are you going to choose? Maybe if you knew that prime rib packed up to 750 calories, your decision would be a little bit easier. That’s right, the prime rib that you’ve loved for years comes from one of the fattiest parts of the cow. If beef is what you want, opt for the beef tenderloin. It will save you at least 50 to 100 calories and is just as tasty as the prime rib.

Dessert

Ahh, the desserts of the holidays. Impossible to avoid and too good to resist. Holiday pies dominate most dessert tables, and it’s for good reason. They’re full of sugar and fat with just a touch of butter and fruit. While there are a lot of bad pies, the worst one you can consume would have to be the pecan pie. Sticky with corn syrup and sugar, the pecan pie is the worst offender on the dessert table for sure. If you still want dessert but would prefer to avoid the pecan pie, look for the chocolate fondue or angel food cake. Either of these options are much better for you and you’ll save tons of calories swapping out for them.

The holidays are among the worst times of the year to be dieting, especially because there’s always the temptation of amazing food that you really don’t have the opportunity to eat at any other time throughout the year. Instead of giving up everything you love, if you just make some very basic changes to your diet and swap one thing out for another, you’ll be able to focus less on what you’re eating and more on the people you’re spending your holidays with.

How to Choose a Fantastic Christmas Gift for Your Sister

November 21, 2012 by Trish

There are few people in the world who will ever know you as well as your sister. You and she share common family lines, personality traits, and memories of growing up. If you want to give your sister a gift she’ll cherish this coming holiday season, then the time to start planning is now. Need some inspiration? Here are some tips for how to choose a fantastic Christmas gift for your sister:

Give her something she needs. Does your sister make regular sacrifices for others? If so, she most likely has a secret wish list of items that would make her life a lot easier (or otherwise pleasant) – items that she would never buy for herself. For example, if your sister’s son has the latest iPhone and she is still navigating the roadways with a compass (we all know a woman like this, no?), you can do her a big favor by gifting her with any of a number of great gadgets, from mp3 players to GPS units.

Give her a fantasy gift. Everyone has a fantasy land in their minds that they like to visit when real life is stuck in the doldrums, and chances are your sister has allowed you access to her daydreams on more than one occasion. Tickle her fancy this Christmas by giving her a unique and unexpected gift that springs from her secret wishes. For example, a hot air balloon ride might be perfect for a woman who secretly wishes she could fly (even adults have childish fantasies), while a guided excursion on horseback might be ideal for an adventurer who spends all of her time tied to the home front.

Something sentimental. The most meaningful gifts don’t have to cost anything but your time and thought. Rummage through the family chest to put together a sentimental gift that will tug at your sister’s heartstrings. For example, you can create a scrapbook with old photos, or create a video dedication to your sister using clips from old home videos.

Get the entire family involved. If your ideal gift for your sister is going to require a considerable expenditure that you’re simply not capable of meeting on your own, then you can ask your family members to contribute in order to make it possible. The great thing about a family gift (in addition to the sheer magnitude of what you can afford) is that it is a wonderful reminder for your sister of how many people she has in her corner . . .and there is perhaps no greater gift than that.

When it comes to choosing the perfect sister gifts this Christmas, you are really only limited by your imagination. Think of all the qualities that make your sister special, and then draw from this list for inspiration to create a gift that she’ll never forget.
