4 Tips to Help Your Teenager Overcome Peer Pressure

November 6, 2012 by Trish

Being a teenager is tough these days – these kids are faced with taunting, bullying, the undying want and even need to fit in and be “popular,” and of course their own self-confidence issues as they mature and work their way into their own social circles.

So how can you, as a parent, help your teenagers stay on the “right” path – one without the drugs and alcohol and partying that is often associated with the “cool kids” in the class? Here are just a few tips to help your teen find out who they are for themselves and avoid the dangers of succumbing to risky peer pressure.

Stay Involved

Perhaps the most important step in helping your teenager mature into a responsible adult is to stay involved in their lives. This means asking questions and being genuinely interested in the things that seem to interest your teen.

After each school day, ask your teen about their classes and their current circle of friends. If someone has done or said something mean, help your teen understand what the person meant by it and help them realize that maybe it wasn’t meant the way that it was said. Ask about weekend plans, and always ask who will be home at a friend’s house when your teen says that they are leaving your home to go there.

Staying involved by asking questions and knowing what your teen is doing as often as possible can help you understand what their life is like, what interests they have and what kind of friends they are becoming close to. This, in turn, can lead to a further understanding of potential dangers that may arise in your teen’s life when it comes to peer pressure.

Develop a Strong Sense of Family

Family is the closest group a teenager can have, so it’s important to nurture that relationship as a group to encourage your child to make more positive decisions later on in life.

Find time to plan plenty of family activities on weekends and vacations, and develop a strong bond with your teenager in doing so. Think about it – a teen who doesn’t have a strong family relationship at home will be far more likely to go out on their own and make bad decisions because they often feel that no one will care if they mess up.

Make sure your teenagers know that you are proud of them and the decisions that they make, and let them know that their presence contributes to your family. These are the teenagers that will be more likely to want to spend time at home, like, say, after curfew. They won’t dread coming home to parents that they don’t feel care about them.

Help Instill Confidence

It’s tough for a teenager to feel confident in themselves – there are so many external influences on them now that often inadvertently tell them that they aren’t “good enough,” including their peers.

If you can instill that much-needed confidence in your teenager on the home front, you’re one step ahead of the game when it comes to your teen being able to face peer pressure. The more confident your child is in themselves, the more likely they will feel comfortable saying “no” when an opportunity arises with peer pressure.

Explain it’s OK to Say No!

We’ve all been there – we’ve struggled as teens ourselves to say “no,” and sometimes we’ve even made the mistakes of saying “yes.” Teens will make mistakes, and they will learn from them, just as you likely have.

But share your experiences as a teenager with your own teen. Enlighten them on the mistakes that you once made (with some discretion, of course), and explain to them that you simply do not want to see them making the same mistakes. If you ever wished you had said “no” to something, explain how that felt when you realized your mistake.

It’s important to teach your teenagers that in most circumstances, it’s OK to say “no.” Being the most popular kid in high school does not mean that they will be the most successful adult beyond the high school years, as many teenagers believe. In fact, the teenagers that know how to overcome peer pressure and just say “no” are often the ones who develop stronger senses of identities and possess more leadership skills that the pressurers.

With a little bit of guidance and help from you, the parents, it is possible to help your teenager overcome the difficult pressures of being that age. Just be patient, be gentle and always let them know that you are there to help them, not ruin their lives.

5 Creative Yet Simple Ways To Reduce Your Financial Stress Levels Now!

November 5, 2012 by Trish

Easier said than done right? One of the main causes of stress in daily life are the financial ones, and anyone who’s ever experienced these stresses will undoubtedly groan in despair when they read this headline, but financial stresses can be tackled with some fairly simple stress busting techniques. Follow these five every day tips to make sure your financial woes are cured.

Image credit to from bruckerrlb Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/12133844@N00/407842334/

1)  Take A Deep Breath

Probably the most common stress-busting tip when the pressure hits is to sit back, take a deep breath and take stock of the situation. Often financial blunders can be made if you’re not thinking straight, so taking a step back to analyse what’s going on in your wallet or in your bank will make the world of difference, you may even realise that some of your worries are less important than you first thought, and be able to put more emphasis on the ones which are.

2)  Clear Up

Again, a simple but effective solution when everything gets on top of you is to spend some time clearing up clutter, literally, because a clean, tidy home life can make it easier to make more sensible decisions financially. Put aside time to clear up at home and your mind will follow suit.

3)  Get Organised

Similar to the clutter rule, making time to organise yourself with a schedule in order to prioritise financial obligations and payment plans can make life much simpler and remove stressful situations. Whether you choose to make a spread sheet of all your purchases and outgoings, fill out a monthly wall chart or download a phone app to monitor yourself electronically, get your finances in order to reduce your stress levels.

4)  Learning To Say No

One of the most stressful aspects of life in the modern age is probably trying to please everyone and feeling bad about missing out. But at the same time saying yes to everyone and everything can lend you in financial hot water. Learning to say no occasionally is probably the most useful way to save yourself from financial freak outs. It might be hard to resist, but get into the habit of making decisions based on finances and you’ll feel less stressed and can enjoy the times when you do say yes.

5)  Get Some Exercise

Getting some exercise can help to clear your mind of financial woes, and potentially give you time to think of solutions too. The endorphins you get from exercise generally make you happier too, so it’s a win win situation, and if you partake in running rather than joining a gym, it’s free too.

So finances can be stressful business, and if you don’t get on top of the them early then they can turn into bigger problems that become unmanageable. Follow these simple but effective rules for staying stress-free and apply them to your financial concerns and you could find yourself breezing through life’s financial problems.

Discover the Wonderful World of Fashion Sewing Projects

November 4, 2012 by Trish

Sewing can be great fun. And that’s not all – it’s a practical skill that can save you money and help you create wonderful garments. Some might see sewing as a skill of the past, but that’s not the case, it’s still as relevant as ever. Whether its alterations to existing items or grand large-scale projects, sewing can be just the ticket to get the outcome you desire. Here you can see some of the best sewing projects – whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned old-hand.

There’s such an endless amount of potential projects that it’s not feasible to list them all here. Creativity is central to sewing and new projects are being conjured up all the time. Millions of sewing enthusiasts have been coming up with new projects for decades now, and it doesn’t take much for you to get involved too.

Avoid Complicated Projects if You’re a Newcomer

It can take some time to get to grips with a sewing machine, especially if you haven’t used one before. That’s why it’s a good idea to keep your first few projects simple while you get the hang of things. Keeping to projects with straight lines is a good idea – as is staying away from more complicated stitching and gathering.

Although one of the main reasons many people get into sewing can be to fix buttonholes and add zippers to items – this can be hard for beginners. For your first few projects, it also might be a good idea to stay away from items that need fasteners.

Choose The Right Fabric for Your First Project

Here’s a great trick that can help you when you’re just starting out in the sewing world – use patterned fabric. Not only does it look great, but any minor mistakes you make will be easily hidden. Less than perfect stitching won’t be as visible.

Winter Sewing Projects

Sewing can be an excellent thing to do as winter approaches, especially around Christmas. There are so many different Christmas decorations you can make – each and every one adding a fantastic seasonal touch to your home.

Let’s face it – Christmas decorations can be expensive these days, but with the right sewing skills you can produce countless charming items for yourself, and your family and friends.
The list of potential Christmas items you could make is endless, from elf hats to Christmas tree decorations, and much, much more.

Fashion Sewing

In order to stay in vogue in today’s faced paced fashion world, alterations can be made to existing items. What might have gone out of fashion can now be made relevant again. The right sewing skills can help you not only alter, but also create great fashionable items. Learning to sew could be the first step to becoming a top fashion designer – as it’s a skill they’ve all mastered.

Home Decorations

Decorating the home isn’t just for Christmas, and the right sewing skills can help you make your house look beautiful all year round. Whether it’s a duvet cover or an exquisite customized lampshade, there are simply countless things you can alter in your home to give an extra special touch, and impress your visitors.

Cushion Covers

Sewing cushion covers is one of the most popular activities in the sewing community. There are so many different creative things you can do to really add that extra special creative touch to your home. Colorful cushion covers are such a simple yet wonderful way to impress your guests. For beginners, it can be a great idea to work on simple “envelope back” cushion covers as they don’t require zips or any other types of fasteners.

Shopping Bags

The great thing about using hand-crafted shopping bags is that it’s better for the environment. Not only do they look great – but you’re saving the need to use unsightly and polluting plastic bags.

Conversions and Upcycling

Whilst making completely new items can be a great thing to do – you don’t always need to start from scratch. There are so many fantastic alterations you can make to existing items, they can be converted into something completely different and exciting.

Upcycling has become increasingly popular in recent times – and it’s not hard to see why. You can rejuvenate old unwanted items and give them a new lease of life. Not only is it a fun and creative thing to do, but it can save you money too! Instead of going out and buying an expensive new quilt – you can piece together older items to make a stylish one of your own. Retro chic fashion is now very vogue, so it doesn’t even matter if things look dated or from another era – that’s a stylistic plus not a negative.

Got an old apron that no longer fits? Don’t throw it away, you can convert it into a hip fabric bag. People don’t want mass-produced items with no character. Your own creations can be completely unique. It’ll not only make you stand out amongst your peers – but it might be the first step towards making money from your wonderful hobby. People love to pay for unique, bespoke items and sewing is a skill that could help you get additional income from the creative pastime you enjoy.

Start Your First Sewing Project Today

If you haven’t given it a go already, then why not? There are so many potential projects that you’re sure to find one to suit your tastes. The internet has a wealth of information and tutorials, meaning even if you’ve never sewn before, you can find the right advice and tips to get started.

You don’t even need a sewing machine, there are a number of simple and fun projects that can be sewn by hand. All top sewers started somewhere, and hand sewing is a skill you should probably learn before going any further. What’s great about hand sewing is you can give it a go without spending loads on an expensive machine. After all, people had been sewing long before machines were even invented.

Design Your Dream Bedroom

November 3, 2012 by Trish

For many interior decoration fanatics, the master bedroom is the centrepoint of the home. At once both the most private room and the one with the most potential for interesting and bold design, the bedroom offers a challenge to even the most savvy of décor fashionistas. Read on for 3 great boudoir design tips.

1. Choose Your Curtains Carefully

Curtains are often overlooked by keen amateur designers, as they are not as glamorous as more central features. However, curtains perform a very important role, and selecting the right ones can assist you in setting the correct atmosphere for the room, as they frame (or cover) the only source of natural light. There are a number of factors to consider. Generally speaking, thicker fabrics offer greater protection from the cold and sunlight, whilst thinner ones fold more crisply when drawn. Bolder patterns can be paired with eyelet headings in order to create a contemporary mood, whilst layered silk curtains offer a sense of formal class without appearing stuffy. Positioning should also be considered – hanging your curtains 6 inches above the frame will make the windows appear taller, and some designers have experimented with greater heights to impart a dramatic look.

2. A Beautiful Bed

Of course, the bed is the focal point of the bedroom. Designers have a great deal of choice here, meaning that all tastes and wallets can be accommodated. Those of a more traditional bent will doubtless be keen to pick out a grand, four-poster bedstead crafted from mahogany, whilst fans of the modern boutique bedroom will be considering low-slung, sleek metal or composite varieties, with or without a headboard. Whatever you choose, remember to pick the right bedding. Luxury duvet sets and pillows complete your bedstead, either enhancing or softening the approach you have taken to the rest of the room. Minimalist decor can be spruced up with a few wisely selected cushions, giving a more substantial impression. More traditional looks, on the other hand, can appear too soft with a large number of pillows, and might benefit from more simplistic dressing. The great dividers, of course, are silk and satin sheets. Love them or hate them, they certainly lend a certain flavour to the room.

3. Storage

Storage solutions must combine efficiency and good looks, making this aspect of bedroom design the most difficult one. Those of us lucky enough to have walk-in closets have an easier job as, if necessary, the decorative theme can be altered slightly with the transition to this new ‘room’. Those limited to more traditional layouts have a number of matters to consider. Do you want to tuck your cupboards out of the way to maintain a sleek, contemporary feel, or would you like to inject some clutter? Similarly, would you prefer smaller, low-key designs, or grandiose wardrobes stretching from floor to ceiling? Whatever your theme, make sure you have enough space to store everything; don’t sacrifice function for form.

The neighborhood storm damage

November 2, 2012 by Tricia

I’ve been out walking around the neighborhood this week and it looks like there are quite a few trees that were damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

Last Monday we had a lot of wind and rain here in Toronto and we lost power over night. We didn’t personally have any damage. Just a little windblown yard but that’s about it. However, as I said, there were a lot of people with damaged trees and trees fallen over in their yards or trees fallen down on their cars.

There are some areas of Toronto where houses are built in fairly low lying areas and they end up having flooding problems every time there’s a terrible rain so I’m sure there were a lot of houses with flooded basements too.

I should have taken some pictures of the damage that I saw. I think most of the trees have been cleaned up by now. Overall the storm wasn’t as bad here as I thought it might be. I know it was a lot worse on the US east coast.

When I was walking around look at damage I thought the local pharmacy had been damaged because I saw a lot of activity there but they were just upgrading and renovating a bit. I guess they had just got some new pharmacy shelving from mfried.com judging by the boxes saw outside and that must have been why there was so much activity there. They weren’t open for business the day I noticed them working on their store.

Do you experience Hurricane Sandy? How did you get through the storm?
