My dog isn’t acting her normal self

March 5, 2011 by Tricia

My poor puppy, she hasn’t been acting quite like herself this week. I’m not sure what’s wrong with her either.

She’s in heat and perhaps that’s all that’s wrong, but she’s never acted quite the way she’s acting. She went into heat about two weeks ago, and about a week ago she started getting whinny and she’s not usually a whinny dog. She’d just start whining for no apparent reason.

She doesn’t seem to be in pain and she’s eating and acting fairly normal overall … she just whines a lot more than she usually does and sometimes when we get up to go out and it’s a situation where she’d usually be excited or begging to go out with us she just lies on the floor or couch looking at us … totally not normally. It just makes me think something’s a little off … I wish there were a Medicare plan for dogs as I’d simply just bring her into the vet for a check up … but without a clear sign or a really strong gut feeling that she’s ill I think I’ll hold off on the vet visit for now.

Have you ever cared for a female dog that’s in heat? Does any of this behavior sound familiar?

It’s “winning” not whining Midnight – get it right! LOL

This is normal. I have an unspayed bitch & she gets very morose when shes on heat! She just lies around huffing until about half way through (week 2-3) when she decides she wants some action. I do feel for her, dogs definitely have hormones like us, that’s for sure. Bless.

Poor thing! It sounds normal and can be quite distressing, but if you’re in any doubt at all take her to the vet. If this is her first heat then she’ll be wondering what’s happening, with hormones going crazy – just think what teenage girls can be like!

Midnight is actually doing a lot better now. I guess she’s still in heat, but it should be just about over. I noticed her starting February 16th so it’s been a month and she stopped that whining and mopping around about a week and a a half ago.

Midnight is 3.5 years old so she’s been through several heats now and this was the first time she’s been this whinny. She just really wasn’t herself.

What I do when I’m not sure if my cat Avalon has something serious or not is first call to the vet and explain the symptoms. If the vet’s honest, he’ll tell you what you can do at home without his help. Do know that if you wait too long, it might be too late to help your dog if he has something serious. Good luck.
