Toronto and it’s fickle weather

December 13, 2009 by Tricia

Wow, winter hit Toronto with a vengeance last week! We had our first snow storm and temps fell to -20 Celsius (-4 F) or lower with the windchill. The only one in our household who didn’t seem to mind going outside was our Labrador Retriever Midnight. LOL She seems to love the cold … well for a while anyway. She can definitely stay out in it longer than we can.

I was seriously wishing by Thursday that I had a free vacation to one of those spa like jamaica hotels or to some other tropical area.

It did warm up over the weekend. In fact we got some rain yesterday and as a result most of the snow is gone. That’s Toronto for you, freezing one week and tolerably warm the next.

How’s the weather in your area? Did you get snow last week too? Or are you one of my lucky readers who happens to live in a nice area that doesn’t get really cold temps or snow?

Our house is a dust magnet

December 8, 2009 by Tricia

Do you ever wonder where dust comes from? Or perhaps a better question is, how can you spend hours cleaning your home only to have dust everywhere a few days later? LOL

Our house seems to accumulate dust – maybe it’s because we have an old furnace? Or maybe because we haven’t finished our renovations so there’s exposed plaster in a few areas?

I don’t know what it is, but it seems no matter how often I clean my house there’s always dust on things within days. Sigh. Oh and we change the filters on our furnace about every two months. I’m sure that helps, but I guess it doesn’t get all the dust. Like I said we have an old furnace, maybe if we had a newer one it would help lower the dust in the house.

Chris had the day off today, so we decide to do a thorough house cleaning. It was snowing outside -our first real snow of the season – so we might as well have done something indoors, right. I changed the bed sheets, and dusted everywhere (even the walls!). Chris followed a bit behind me vacuuming. He even cleaned the three ceiling fans that we have in the house. The arms on the fan even manage to get dust on them when they are running 24 hours a day.

It’s great that my husband is so helpful around the house. He even did the dishes!

We got a flyer today for a local Canadian Pharmacy and they have air purifiers on sale, so I think we might get another one for the house (we already have two). Maybe that will help.

Does your house seem to accumulate dust easily too?

Of course along with the dust we also end up sweeping or vacuuming up a lot of dog hair. Our black Lab always seem to be shedding.

Our dog has two dog beds and we vacuumed them today as well. While I was working on one of them I noticed that there was tons of dog hair stuck on the inside to some of the velcro that holds the donut pillow. Man that was hard to remove! I didn’t get it all – not by a long shot! No wonder her bed was getting smelly!

After seeing how dirty our dogs beds were, my husband decided to take them to the laundromat down the street. They have some really big washing machines and driers. So now the beds are clean (well there’s still some dog hair stuck to the velcro, but they smell much better!).

I also spent some time sewing up some of the holes that our dog had made in her beds by chewing the material. Most of the holes were old ones that she did when she was younger. She’s two now and doesn’t really chew things other than her toys now (thankfully!), so I’m hoping that with the repairs her two beds will last for another year or two.

I love it when the house is clean. I’m not a neat freak, but hey … it is nice when the house is tidy. I’d just like the house to be able to stay clean for a while after putting hours in dusting, vacuuming and cleaning counters, tubs and showers. If the dust and dog hair would go away I’d be really happy!

Time for bed … I love sleeping in a bed that’s just been made up with fresh sheets. Don’t you? …. Good Night!

My niece did well at her wedding shower

December 6, 2009 by Tricia

I just got back from my nieces bridal shower. Boy am I tired!

My niece did well at her shower. I think she spent close to two hours opening gifts! She got a lot of things that she’d asked for in her Wedding registry like the specific kettle, griddle, toaster, and even towels, bed sheets, dish towels and other kitchen accessories that she wanted.

It’s great that she got so much great stuff. She’s never lived on her own – she went from her parents home to her fiances home so when they move to New Brunswick in the new year she’ll be starting out with her first home. Well .. probably an army base home, but the first one that she can call her own. So she needs a lot of things to help them get off to a good start.

A group of women from her work place got together and bought her several gifts. They were the last gifts she opened and all of them – maybe 8 gift wrapped boxes of varying sizes were wrapped alike. I didn’t know at the time that all of those gifts were from her friends at work. I thought one person had really gone all out!

She seemed really happy with all of her gifts and pleased to see her relatives and friends.

My niece says she enjoys giving gifts too, so once she was finished opening her shower gifts she put all of our names in one of her new bowls and gave out four gift baskets. My sister in law, who was sitting beside me on the couch, won the first gift and then I got the second one! I think people were starting to wonder if our family was going to get all the gift baskets, but as it turned out, the last two were won by relatives on her new in laws side of the family … so it worked out. LOL She also gave a small gift to everyone who attended to party so no one left empty handed. Wasn’t that nice of the bride to be?

My gift basket contained scented tea candles, a floating candle, Chocolate pepper soap (smells great!), nail polish, a skin scrubbie, and body lotion. All very nice.

My niece still doesn’t know exactly when she and her new husband to be will be moving to New Brunswick … I suspect it will be sometime in February. If this shower was any indication, I think she’s going to get a lot of gifts for her wedding too … They’re going to need a big truck to haul all their things to their new home!

Oh and my niece was apparently just promoted at work (Pier1). She’s a manager now … unfortunately there isn’t a store located where she’ll be moving so she can’t transfer her job. I suggested that she take a look at some of the top franchises that might be located near where she’s going to be moving and start apply for jobs soon. Hopefully she’ll be able to find a job!

I have to say that I don’t usually like wedding or baby showers, but I had a good time today. Maybe they’re not so bad after all.

Our scuzzy neighbors will be gone soon!

November 30, 2009 by Tricia

Ha! I just found out that our terrible renter neighbors will have to move out soon!

Earlier today I noticed that there was a washing machine and a dryer sitting on their front porch. Now, since our washing machine up and died in August we’ve been doing without and taking our laundry to a laundromat (and drying it at home).

I knew that the renters were also going to a laundromat to dry their clothes because their dryer isn’t hooked up for some reason and possibly doesn’t work. So I saw what appears to be a new looking washing machine and dryer on their porch and I thought that the home owners might have bought new appliances for the house.

So I called the home owners to ask them about it as I was hoping that if they were replacing these items that maybe we could have the old washing machine if it still worked. Hey … a used one is better than ours that doesn’t work at all, right?

What I found out is that the home owners didn’t know anything about the washer and dryer sitting on the renters porch, AND, that the renters haven’t been paying their rent!

The home owners were just over there a few days ago to ask them for the rent. They just moved in in September and I don’t know if they paid first and last rent (with the home owners history I suspect they only paid the first months rent), so it’s possible that they missed both Octobers and November’s rent.

The home owners are in the process of trying to evict them. The lady said to me – you know I think they lied about their jobs too. I asked if they’d called the employers that they’d listed and she said they called the numbers they were given and talked to people that the renters had told them to ask for. I suggested that she just call the human resources department of the workplaces that they’d listed but she said “what’s the point now since we’re trying to evict them”. Dumb, the fact that they lied about having jobs might help the home owners evict them sooner.

I guess the rent isn’t the only bill that they aren’t paying. Ever since they moved in I’ve noticed that they keep a lot of windows in their house open. I figured they’d stop doing that once it got really cold (like now!) because their heating bill would be sky high … well they haven’t … so I’d bet that they aren’t paying the heating, electricity or their other bills. It won’t be long before they’re cut off.

I’m pretty sure they aren’t paying their cable and internet bill.

I just checked my internet usage (from Rogers) and it’s way up! Rogers, my internet provider only allows us to use 60 GB per month. Prior to our scuzzy renter neighbors moving in my usage averaged about 8 to 10 GB per month. However I just checked our usage for November and it’s up to 52 GB! They’ve been stealing our bandwidth!

Now I thought that our Linksys Router was secure, but it seems that I turned it off a few months ago when we were traveling and I hooked up to another wireless service. Duh – that was dumb – or well, dumb not to make my connection secure again!

I just made our router connection secure again so they can’t steal our internet coverage! Ha, and I renamed our system “No more free internet for you!” LOL So now when they see wireless connections in their area (say when they’re wondering why they can’t connect) they’ll see my message for our wireless connection … the one they won’t be able to get into anymore! HA!

I learned my lesson! Always secure your router connection! I just hope they didn’t use the internet a lot today and push us over the 60 GB monthly limit! My usage report only goes from November 1st to 29th, so I don’t know how much they used today before I cut them off. If they did push us over I’ll have to pay extra on our internet bill.

Like I said it was really dumb of me to not make sure our internet connection was secure. That won’t happen again!

Now that they’re cut off, the scuzzy renter neighbors will have one less form of entertainment … maybe that will help them move out soon! Then the nightmare will be over – no more locking even our screen doors all the time and not leaving the house empty for long (we fear they’ll rob us if they know we’re out since the guy has apparently robbed his own parents and sister!).

I hope it doesn’t take the home owners too long to get them kicked out. I think the renters are on a monthly lease, but still .. the laws here in Toronto make it hard to evict people even if they haven’t paid their rent in months.

When I was talking with the home owner this afternoon I suggested that once they get these people out that they raise the rent. I mean, they’re renting a whole house in a great neighborhood for only $1000! That’s unbelievable … but no wonder the two renters they’ve had so far turned out bad. If they raise the rent to $1400 or $1500 (still a bargain) they’d likely get a better class of renter. Anyway, she said they’d likely just sell the house after this as the ‘renting” experience was just too stressful.

When we renovate our bathroom we’re putting in a digital shower

November 30, 2009 by Tricia

The other day I mentioned that we were starting to think about finally finishing our home renovation projects. Well, as a result of this new interest in sprucing up our home I’ve been looking at home renovation sites and checking out new products.

It will be quite a while before we renovate our upstairs and basement bathrooms, but I definitely have some ideas as to what I’d like to do when we do work on them. For instance, I had no idea that such a thing as a digital shower existed! When we redo the basement bathroom I want to put in a whirlpool bathtub and have a separate shower enclosure, and now I’m pretty sure that the shower controls will be digital!

Have you ever heard of a digital shower? If you haven’t and you’ve been thinking of redoing your bathroom, you should look into this new technology. A digital shower allows you to start the water flowing in your shower from any room in the house. Not only that, you can program the temperature that you want the shower water to be set at and you’ll have the perfect shower.

No more adjusting the temperature over and over again as you start your shower. That’s one of the things I hate about our shower. I start the water and it’s always too cold at first, so I add more hot water and then it’s too hot so I spend a few minutes trying to get it just right. I imagine I’m also wasting quite a bit of water as I try to get the temperature just right. If we had a digital shower I wouldn’t be wasting my time or all that water anymore.

You can apparently program a digital shower for each family member. So if one person likes a cool shower and another likes a hot one (I like warm – not too cool or too hot) everyone can program in their personal preferences.

How does it work? Well you turn on the shower and when the desired temperature is reached it will beep or give some kind of visual signal. Some of the units will even even keep the water temperature consistent even if other members of the household are flushing a toilet while you shower.

I’m going to put a digital shower on my wish list for when we get around to renovating our bathrooms.

Does anyone already have a digital shower? If so, what do you think of it?
