Now our furnace thermostat is broken! What else can go wrong

October 3, 2009 by Tricia

It figures. We’re going through a rough patch financially and it seems like everything in our house is breaking down or not working quite right. Ironic isn’t it?

The latest thing in our growing list of household items and appliances that are breaking is the thermostat for our furnace! It doesn’t seem to be calculating the room temperature accurately. I spent some time on the internet trying to find out where we could buy a new one or figure out how to fix ours and I keep getting sent to a page for a Honeywell Barcode Scanner when I type in the thermostat model number. I guess our thermostat model is not being made anymore.

Last week the bottom of our shower stall cracked! LOL … Really .. I have to laugh or I’ll start crying. We just have no money to fix these things!

We’ve been trying to be very careful with our spending over the last few months (generally we are careful about our spending anyway, but we’ve tried to find other ways to cut expenses recently) and if we can keep it up for a few more months we should be able to fix or replace most of the things that have broken over the last few months. I just hope that nothng else breaks in the meantime!

The list of broken things includes our toaster oven, the washing machine, the shower stall and now our furnace thermostat. I’m sure there’s a few other things that have broken recently but those are the biggies. Of course we need to fix that thermostat now, since it’s getting quite cool here in Toronto!

Anyone else having things break down in their home that they can’t afford to fix or replace right now?

Talk about a string of bad luck Tricia 🙁

The siding to our house needs to be replaced, the washing machine is broke & my bathroom could use some major TLC. No money either! I’m just hoping everything can hold out, till I can get the money to pay for it all. (…Sigh)

All I can tell you is to hang in there and hope it all gets better!!

Lyndon – good to hear from you! It’s been a long while! Sounds like you have similar things breaking down in your house as we do! We’re fixing what we HAVE to as best and as cheaply as we can, and holding off on the more expensive repairs or replacements (ie the washing machine).

If anything else major breaks down that needs immediate repair well .. we’re done. We won’t be able to fix it or replace it. We’re so cash strapped it’s just not funny.

I hope for both our sakes that our situations get better!

    Hi Tricia,

My thermostat went dead on me a few months ago and when I tried to find a replacement it had also been discontinued. I tried ebay with no luck but I got lucky and found mine at a salvage place for buildings that are being torn down. The best thing was that it was only $5. Most cities have a place like this and you can call and see if they got it.

Shirts and Shoes Optional – good idea. You just made me remember that we have a “Habitat for Humanity” store nearby and we might find an old thermostat there. Thanks!

I am almost relieved to see someone else is going through this same cycle of things breaking. Ours has been a comedy of car issues. My dtr totaled her car last week(still living at home), main car up on blocks with parts lying on the ground (never a good sign for what it is going to cost for repair), overheating issues on the other but at least its’ driveable. Good luck on the thermostat. Maybe your neighbors have had similar issues and might have a solution???Just a suggestion.

Sheila maybe every house goes through a cycle like this? We’ve been living here for 9 years now … perhaps every eight or nine years we’ll see three or four things break down in a row? LOL If so I’d better be better prepared financially the next time this cycle rolls around!

Just when you think the worst is over, another problem comes along…
Talking about broken things, our poor, old van always gets broken down. Sometimes it’s the machine, or the tires, battery… after my mom gets one thing fixed, anothe one breaks. Poor mom. 🙁

Brochure Printing … I’m sorry that so many things are breaking down for your mom. We’ve had about two weeks now with nothing new breaking so I’m hoping things will stay that way! We just can’t afford to keep trying to fix things.
