She’s really INto her food

April 15, 2008 by Tricia

My puppy … you gotta love her … she totally lives for her food.

IMG_3319

Back on March 15th we got a new bag of Nutro’s Healthy Choice Lamb and Rice formula dog food for large breed puppies. After we dumped the contents into one of her dog food bins Midnight couldn’t resist looking in the bag to see if we’d forgotten any pieces or crumbs.

I’d cut out a portion of the bag because I wanted to keep the feeding directions. When you have a growing puppy it’s important to know how much you should be feeding them when they reach a certain weight or age range. So there was a small cut out in the bag.

She dove into the bag and ended up wearing it on her head. It was pretty funny and I couldn’t resist taking some pictures.

At least, thanks to photography, I now know exactly how long the second largest bag lasts! We just opened another bag for her last night so one bag lasts approximately one month. Well … we mix it with another dog food – Blue Buffalo Large breed chicken and brown rice for puppies, so I guess if we were only feeding her the one food a bag would only last 15 days. Boy, dogs are expensive!

Whenever I post photos of Midnight people comment on how shiny her coat is and some have asked what we’ve been feeding her. Well now you know – Nutro Healthy Choice Lamb and Rice formula dog food for large breed puppies and Blue Buffalo Large breed chicken and brown rice for puppies.

When we first got her she was pretty sick. She had a bacterial infection in her bowel, roundworms, diarrhea, an eye infection and then an ear infection, dry skin and dandruff. Her coat wasn’t always nice and shiny, but about a month after she came to live with us we started to notice how shiny her fur was becoming. I guess it was one of the first signs that she was getting healthier.

She still has red eyes (and we’re still treating them) and her movements are sometimes still loose so she gets Pepto Bismol every day, but overall she’s a very happy fairly healthy 7.5 month old puppy who’s extremely motivated by food!

IMG_3415

Her latest pastime is climbing on the couch and looking out the window or ringing the bell we hung from the front door to go outside.

BTW the window is smudged. She rubs her wet nose on it and licks the window as she watches what’s going on outside.

Do your pets do silly things when you get a new bag of food or even when you are about to feed them? Midnight runs and jumps around the kitchen and whines as we prepare her food. Silly dog.

I have another story and cute picture of Midnight on one of my other blogs if you’re interested.

Fondly remembering my Florida spring vacation

April 14, 2008 by Tricia

Spring is a wonderful time to take a vacation isn’t it? I’ve been enjoying spring here in my own city, but I can’t help remembering some of the great spring vacations I’ve taken in the past. Actually now that I think of it, I think I’ve been to Florida in the spring more often than any other place in the world that I’ve vacationed.

The last time I went to Florida for spring vacation was several years ago. It was beautiful. The temperatures were in the 70’s to low 80’s so it was extremely comfortable.

I stayed with some friends in the Tampa and Orlando area. We visited both Tampa, Orlando and several other cities across the State. You see one of my nurse friends had traveled with me to Florida but she was staying in Boca Raton so we went there to spend a day with her and even drove down to Miami and visited the Miami Seaquarium. I guess we spent a lot of time traveling by car, but it was well worth it.

If you’re planning a spring vacation you should visit Trusted Tours & Attractions. They offer discounted tickets to the very best sightseeing tours. You’ll find discounted sight seeing tour tickets as well as some great information for 23 cities across America.

I actually wish I’d known about this companies website when I was looking for things to do in Orlando and other Florida cities. I could have even picked up some discount tickets for not only sight seeing tours but local attractions and I believe hotel rates as well.

If you expect to be going on vacation this spring or perhaps later in the year you might want to sign up for their newsletter. When you sign up for their newsletter before the end of April you’ll be entered in a contest where you could win a hand held system. Isn’t that great?

The newsletter is full of travel tips, interesting stories and links to travel blogs. I’m sure you’ll find it interesting and informative.

Visit the website, I’m sure you’ll find some great travel ideas!

Spring plants are growing fast

Now that spring is here and I can actually see my garden it’s interesting to look out at it and see what new things have popped up from the ground or how much each new plant has grown. Some seem to grow several inches in a day or so!

IMG_3366

I think these are tulips.

The tips of this plant were bright flaming red when we first uncovered them from the leaves that they were buried under.

I think all of the crocus’ in the backyard are blooming now. I planted them in the lawn and near the edges of the garden beds rather than directly in the beds. It looks more natural that way and it’s amazing how pretty they look popping out of the grass as they do:

The way things are speeding along this spring I won’t have long to enjoy the crocus.

Is anything blooming in your garden yet?

Gardeners, Plant and Nature lovers can join in every Sunday, visit As the Garden Grows for more information. GTS participants remember to check in at As the Garden Grows each week so that we’ll know you made a new post!

Tired of shopping retail for swimwear – I’m buying online this year

April 12, 2008 by Tricia

I was just talking about how pool season is coming up and that got me thinking about swimsuits. If you’re shopping retail and you need a swimsuit you might be out of luck by now.

That’s what I hate about shopping retail for seasonal items. If you want to get a decent swimsuit or any swimsuit at all you pretty much have to shop for it in January or February in this area. Same goes for shorts and other summer wear.

Oh sure, the stores might still have some summer wear in stock, but by the time the first heat wave roles around there won’t be one suit in sight! Instead the stores will have winter coats and boots. I’m sorry but the last thing I’m thinking of in the dead of winter is a skimpy bikini and likewise I’m not thinking of down coats during a heat wave!

Has that happened to you too? The first hot day in spring or summer comes along and you feel like putting on shorts or slipping into a bathing suit so you can go for a swim and when you go shopping for new items the stores are out of stock. Frustrating isn’t it?

That’s why I’m so happy that there are online stores that specialize in seasonal wear. Take SwimSuitsForAll.com as an example. You can purchase swimwear 7 days a week, 24 hours a day year round.

Another thing that I like about this online swimwear shop is that they have a wide selection of styles ranging from tankinis, bikinis to one piece swimsuits and everything in between. They even carry plus sizes.

I was looking at their pre-season sale items when I noticed that they also carry swimwear for those with long torsos. That’s me! I have long legs, but I’ve also got a long torso. Most of my life I’ve had to purchase a bathing suit one size bigger than I really need just so I can get the length. I’m going to spend some time looking over their selection. Perhaps I’ll finally be able to get a swimsuit that fits properly.

Take a look at their swimwear. I’m sure you’ll find something cute for summer and the great thing is you can buy it whenever you want rather than relying on retails strange stocking schedule!

Overlapping petals

This weeks theme is Twisted

Geranium Johnson's Blue

I was busy looking for some interesting picture that I might have taken in the past to use for the Twisted theme when I realized that many of my garden plants have stages where they appear twisted.

Take this Johnson’s Blue Geranium for example. The petals are slightly twisted when the bloom first appears. The petals overlap slightly in a clockwise fan shape.

This is actually a very pretty tiny flower. The photo above is a macro so the flower appears much larger than it is in real life. I guess the flowers are only an inch or less in diameter, but the plant is just covered in flowers and buds when it blooms.
