Keeping a dog can be expensive!

December 15, 2008 by Tricia

When we got our Labrador Retriever a little over a year ago I knew we’d have some extra expenses, but I guess I didn’t take into account just how much extra having a dog costs.

The first few months were the most expensive as we bought a crate to keep her in at night, got a dog bed to use inside the crate, experimented with a few different types of food (she was sick when we got her too so we had extra medical expenses too), puppy training classes and we also went through several dog toys as we tried to find ones that wouldn’t be destroyed within minutes! We’ve also tried several different leashes and harnesses in our effort to get her not to pull so much when we take her out on walks.

midnightonporch I guess that’s what happens when you are a first time dog owner, eh?

These days The biggest expense in relation to keeping Midnight is her food and toys. She obviously needs food and we feed her with a higher grade dog food – no chemicals, natural ingredients as we’ve found that’s the only kind that works well with her sensitive digestive system.

She also needs toys. Labs are high energy dogs that tend to be chewers. If we don’t provide her with something appropriate to chew on she’d chew the furniture. She’s tried that too, but luckily she hasn’t done too much damage! Yet!

Toys for power chewers (really durable hard toys) are not cheap and Midnight seems to go through her toys pretty fast. We bought her a power chewer bone (foot long nylabone) a month ago and she’s chewed it down to about three inches. So we just got her yet another one on the weekend.

I don’t mind buying her toys if it keeps her busy and keeps my furniture intact, but man, it’s getting expensive! I think I’m going to watch for a sale on durable dog toys and when I see some on sale I’ll buy two or three at a time. That should save us money and keep her occupied!

I was just looking on Buy.com and I found this Ruff Wear Turnip dog toy. It’s a large rubber, turnip shaped toy. It has a hole in it that you could stuff with dog treats (great way to keep dogs happy and occupied for a while), plus the toy bounces like a ball so we could play fetch with her.

I don’t know if it would be all that durable if she were to lie down and start chewing on it, although I think it would last longer than some of the toys we’ve bought her in the past! This toy would probably be best if we were actively playing with her with the turnip toy.

For those of you with dogs, especially large breed dogs … did you find it a little more expensive than you thought it would be after you got your dog? What kind of toys do you buy your dog (especially dogs that are chewers)? I’m just looking for new ideas to keep her occupied and of course anything that’s inexpensive or that might save us some money would be much appreciated.

Flowers on a dreary day

Join Green Thumb Sunday

Join

I just took the dog outside for her last outing of the night and we were both surprised when we heard the pitter patter of ice pellets hitting the ground. Dreary weather.

I’m sure the streets of Toronto will be covered in ice by morning!

I hope that the weather is better in your area today! If it isn’t why not remember summer with me? Here are a few of the lovely flowers and greenery that I grow in my garden.

Looking at these photos and remembering much nicer days will help me forget how miserable the weather is outside today! Hopefully these pictures will also make your day a little more cheery as well.

Enjoy your Sunday!

What addon do you use to open multiple links in Firefox?

December 11, 2008 by Tricia

This has been bugging me for a while … well ever since I upgraded my Firefox browser to version 3.0.

In Firefox 2 I had this great addon called Linky that I used to open multiple links in new tabs. It was great if you were visiting sites listed on a blogroll or wanted to visit all the links listed in someones blog post. All I had to do was highlight the section of links I wanted to open and then right click over them to bring up the menu that would allow me to open all of the links in new tabs.

Unfortunately Linky doesn’t work with Firefox 3 and I’ve been suffering! It was a very useful addon and I haven’t found another addon that works the way it did.

There must be an addon that works with Firefox 3 to open multiple links in new tabs. There’s gotta be. I read posts quite often where people talk about being able to open up multiple tabs … and I’m sure some of those people must be using the latest version of Firefox.

So .. if you know of an addon that might do what I’m missing so badly I’d love to hear your suggestions.

Time to put up the Christmas lights and decorate the house

December 11, 2008 by Tricia

Well I guess it’s that time of year. Actually, we’re a little behind in decorating our house this year. Normally when we decorate the house for Christmas we start by putting the lights up outside in Mid-November or so. That’s usually before we have any real snow.

Even though the lights are up in November we don’t turn them on until the beginning of December. Why? Well I think it’s kind of pushing the holiday to early if the lights go on before December and 2. having Christmas lights on for a full month or more is a waste of energy.

Well, with the old fashioned lights that we first used when we bought our house it was a waste of energy, but now with the new led light bulbs it doesn’t cost us much to have our Christmas lights on at all! It’s a great way to save money and spread some holiday cheer.

We haven’t decorated the house for Christmas for the last few years, partly because we’re still renovating (stalled!) and partly because I’ve been too sick to do it. However this year I don’t think I can go without some decorations. I miss them!

I’m not going to put up our Christmas tree as I know our dog will either knock it over or get into the decorations! I have antique or vintage Christmas ornaments that my parents used on our family tree and I don’t want Midnight to break them! I’ll decorate the enclosed front porch with cedar boughs (fake), decorations and a Christmas wreath and on the outside of the house we use a combination of blue and white light strings.

Do you put up lights and decorate the inside of your house for the holidays? Do you put up a tree as well?

How would you like to have this wrapped around your finger?

December 10, 2008 by Tricia

Wordless Wednesday

wrapped around your finger

I’m not sure what kind of animal this little creature is, but it sure is cute! Oh and it’s so tiny! I wonder how big it will be when it’s full grown?

Anyone know what kind of creature this is?
