Yet another sleepless night and day

October 2, 2008 by Tricia

Yesterday I was in a daze. I didn’t sleep all night. I only fell asleep at about 7:30 in the morning when my husband was getting up to go to work and he accidentally woke me up when he was leaving for work at 9:30.

I couldn’t get back to sleep at all. My stomach was crampy from the Crohn’s disease. So no matter how much I tried to sleep I just couldn’t. I ended up being in a fog most of the day and then at about 5 pm I started to get a bad headache. By 7 it was a migraine.

There was no way that I could write any posts on my blogs yesterday. They would have been gibberish.

I don’t know how I did it, but I didn’t fall asleep until 2:30 this morning. I guess when you’re overtired you just keep going, even if your brain is aching and not functioning well. LOL I think I finally fell asleep during an infomercial for exposed acne treatment or something like that.

The good news is that once I finally fell asleep I slept until about 9 am, and then I managed to fall asleep again until about noon today. I felt so much better after that long sleep.

I don’t sleep much and my sleep habits have gotten a lot worse over the last two years or so since I’ve been off on medical leave. Four to six hours of sleep is about my average per night so getting nine or more hours of sleep in one day is the equivalent of two days sleep for me. No wonder I feel so much better today, eh?

Do you ever have days like that where you haven’t slept or you’ve only had an hour or two’s sleep?

Mud Dog

October 1, 2008 by Tricia

Wordless Wednesday

On Sunday we took our puppy for a hike in Taylor Creek Park here in Toronto.

As you can see she found a wet area that was more mud than water!

She was playing with another dog and they disappeared on a trail in the forest for a few minutes and when they came out the Collie had grey boots and well … Midnight had a mud covered grey snout, and ugh … I guess most of the front of her body was mud covered as well.

She tried to shake the mud off …

But she didn’t do that great of a job.

Luckily for us and the other dog owner, the dogs found some cleaner water to play in a little while later.

We didn’t let the dogs near the mud puddle on the way back.

Oh life with a dog! It’s fun at times, isn’t it?

Remember those “call before you dig” commercials?

September 30, 2008 by Tricia

Yesterday our neighborhood got a stark reminder as to why you should always call your gas, electric and or telephone company before you start digging in your yard …

IMG_4989

At about 11 a.m. the sound of police, fire and ambulance sirens filled the air. Chris and I went outside and we were startled to see several police cars (maybe 6 in total) starting to block off the street across from us. Other police cars were also blocking off side streets a block or so away too. A moment or two later two firetrucks and an ambulance showed up and parked halfway down the street across from us.

Within minutes the streets were filled with concerned neighbors.

Chris walked across the street to talk to a few of the people who were standing on the sidewalk to see what happened.

It seems that one of the homeowners on the street across from us decided to dig up some tree roots. I don’t know if it was the roots of a dead tree or what, but when he was digging he hit the gas line!

So it was a gas leak that was causing all of the hubbub outside.

Chris and I could smell the gas outside too, so it was a pretty bad leak. I mean the house where the leak was is at least a full block away! No wonder the police were blocking off so many streets! The police were also going door to door to all of the houses on the street across from us and asking people to evacuate their homes.

About twenty to thirty minutes after all of the emergency vehicles arrived the first vehicle from the gas company arrived, then a little bit after that a big truck from the gas company came along. The men spent a few minutes gearing up and I noticed two of them with silver Zero Halliburton type briefcases. I’ll bet that their testing equiptment was in those cases.

Once the gas company arrived on the scene and inspected the area the firetrucks departed as did a few of the police cars. It didn’t take the gas company long to fix the leak – maybe 15 minutes? I was surprised at how fast they did the repair … or maybe they just shut off the gas to the house and came back later .. I’m not sure, but they weren’t there very long.

I’d say the street returned to normal within an hour or so. It was strange to see so many emergency vehicles descend so close to our house!

Anyway … let this post be a reminder to anyone that’s thinking of doing some landscaping or digging in their yard. Call the service companies (gas, phone and electric) before you dig so that you don’t end up blowing up your house or endangering your neighbors!

I Can’t believe it’s just about time to start shopping for Christmas presents

September 29, 2008 by Tricia

Do you ever watch American Dad? It’s on, on Sunday nights and the season premiere was on last night. Chris and I taped the show last night on our PVR so we’re just watching it now.

We both love that show, its so funny! It’s definitely not for people that have young kids around though!

We were just thinking that a DVD or two of past American Dad seasons might make a great gift for Chris’ brother. Whenever he comes from Chicago for a visit he always has a good time watching some of the TV shows that he normally doesn’t watch at home when his kids are around.

I’m sure he’d love the show. I found the American Dad Vol 3 DVD at Buy.com. It’s a pretty good price and it would make a great Christmas gift.

Wow, I’m thinking about Christmas already … well I guess with September coming to a close it’s only natural to start thinking about one of the biggest days of the year and along with that what gifts we should get our friends and relatives. I guess that’s all the more reason to keep an eye on the sale at Buy.com. If I can save some money and still get some great gifts for people that would be wonderful.

I hate to ask, but have you started shopping for Christmas yet? I’m usually a notoriously late shopper.

If you thought Lilies only bloomed in the spring or early summer I have one for you that blooms during Autumn. It’s called the Toad Lily:

These little beauties are just starting to form buds and only a few have begun to bloom. However in a week or so they will all be in bloom and what a pretty sight that will be! I love the Toad Lilies freckled petals. They are so tiny and delicate.

I must admit that the plant isn’t much to look at as it grows through the summer, but once it begins to bloom it becomes one of the stars of my Fall garden.

Do any of you grow any of the Toad Lily species?
