Trying to make the sidebar more appealing

August 12, 2008 by Tricia

I spent some time today rearranging the sidebars on a few of my blogs. It’s amazing how much time tinkering with the look of your site can take! I think I’m good at finding ways to waste time.

Anyway … I didn’t make too many changes to this sites sidebar, but I was wondering what you think of the sidebars in general.

Does it looks organized? Do the sidebars add to the look of the site or distract? Can you find whatever you might be looking for on my site easily by using the sidebar?

We’ve all been to websites that totally turn us off from the first look or first blast of autoplay music. I’m fairly certain my site isn’t one of those, but I’d like to know if I could make it more appealing in any way.

If you have an opinion or suggestion I’d love to hear from you.

Bravo – as somebody who deals with website usability on a regular basis, it’s very rare that a webmaster thinks of asking users how to improve their site but it can be vital to really delivering something that you visitors won’t struggle to navigate.

The only thing I’d say after a quick look is your “Recent Posts” are too far down the sidebar for skimming and it would help with navigation if you would provide some category links in the sidebar as that’s the first place, as someone who reads a lot of blogs, expected to find them. Others may disagree with the latter.

I think your sidebar looks good, although it’s busy and ad rich it adds to the site giving the user more content and options. I like sites that look full once they have matured a bit.

If your looking for visitors to find content easier I found the drop down archive box hard to find.

In all you have a cracking blog and have the theme and layout spot on, well done.

Think your right hand sidebar is too cluttered. I would make into just one column. I know this means less space to fit stuff in however will improve the look of your blog.
