The night the lights went out

May 4, 2008 by Tricia

I was just telling my readers on my other blog that we just had a blackout here in my area of Toronto. Three hours of total darkness!

Our power flashed on and off at about 11:30 last night and then went out for good. My laptop was still on and for a minute or two I though I could still use it (I was writing a post) but then I realized that the Linksys router was out due to the power outage. So much for that idea.

I tried to go to sleep honest.

I waited for the power to come back on for a while, but when there was no sign of it returning I got ready for bed. Of course I never go to bed that early so I couldn’t sleep. I read a novel for a while using my husbands book light. Man that was handy. A bit awkward, but handy … but I think I’d only just fallen asleep when the furnace turned on and woke me up.

Someone must have hit a transformer or something. We haven’t had a power outage last that long for quite a while.

Once I got up and turned the computer on again (when the power returned at 2:30 am) I tried to go to local news sites to see if there was any news as to what caused the power failure, but I didn’t find anything. I did learn of a ground beef recall though … luckily we didn’t buy meat in any of the listed stores.

Watching TV with a puppy around is a pain!

May 1, 2008 by Tricia

I’m so happy that Thursday night TV is back! There are so many great shows on Thursday nights now that I have to tape several of them and watch them on Friday or Saturday.

Actually taping the shows on the DVR is a great idea now that we have a puppy. For some reason during the evening she always wants to go out about every half hour or else she’s jumping around playing with her toys, dropping her toy bones on the hardwood floor and just plain making a lot of noise. It makes watching TV a bit of a drag, especially when it’s a favorite show as it can take a long time to watch with all those distractions! If we didn’t tape the shows we’d only ever get to see half of each program.

I’m watching Lost right now. The scene with Hurley in the hospital …. so do you think the Oceanic 6 really are dead or what?

What are your favorite Thursday night shows?

I never realized how many services carpet cleaners offered

May 1, 2008 by Tricia

On Saturday we got a chance to meet our new neighbors. You might remember that I mentioned them in one of my recent posts? We didn’t talk long as they were busy doing some work on their new house. They don’t plan on moving in until the first of July or so.

I don’t think that they plan to knock out walls like we did on our second day in our home, but they did say they were painting and redoing some of their floors.

While we were talking the new lady of the house, C, asked me if I could recommend a carpet cleaning company in the area. Our home is all hardwood floors so we haven’t used a local carpet cleaner however when we lived in our apartment we did have our carpets professionally cleaned a few times.

The first time we used a carpet cleaners services we had them do a very thorough cleaning of our carpets. My husband had used our area rug previously in his dorm room and it had a lot of stains on it.

A good carpet cleaner will not only offer a dry vacuum, but they’ll also offer spot removal, power scrubbing and steam extraction. Some companies even go so far as to offer a finishing service where they will fluff the carpets and even place pads under furniture to decrease the wear and tear on the carpet.

I also inquired if the carpet cleaning service that I used offered upholstery cleaning and they did, so I had them remove some stains on our loveseats. The material on the loveseats was a combination of silk and cotton or silk and rayon. I can’t remember the exact mix, but it was a delicate fabric. I was very pleased with how nice the loveseats looked when they were done. The loveseats were like new again. That stained area rug looked pretty good too.

Some carpet cleaners also offer pet odor control, carpet repair, area and oriental rug cleaning, drapery cleaning and fabric protection. Of course, most of the companies that provide residential services also offer commercial carpet cleaning too.

A few companies even offer tile and grout cleaning. Now that’s a great service to offer. I don’t know what your bathroom looks like, but we have really old tiles in our upstairs washroom and the grout looks terrible. Even though I don’t have carpets I might call in a carpet cleaner to have my drapes and grout cleaned!

I didn’t have any carpet cleaning companies to recommend to our new neighbors as I’d forgotten the name of the company that I’d used so long ago. As you can probably tell, I went online to look up some carpet cleaners in the Toronto area and that’s when I found out about all the different services that are available at some of the companies. After I did some research I was happy to pass on a few company names to our neighbors.

One thing I did learn as I looked for a carpet cleaner was that some offer Internet Specials. By this I mean you can get coupons or Internet discounts if you visit their web page prior to booking their service. So if you happen to be thinking of having your carpets, upholstery or drapes cleaned in the near future don’t forget to do an internet search and see if you can get a discount. You might as well save some money if you can.

I’m seriously sleep deprived

May 1, 2008 by Tricia

I swear I’ve got a sleeping disorder. Over the last several months it’s very common for me to only sleep for an hour of so and then get up again. When that happens I end up not returning to bed for hours and then I only sleep for an hour or two at that time.

In other words I’ve been living on only one to four hours sleep most days for maybe the last two years.

I’ve always been a late night person. Not falling to sleep until about 2 a.m. has been my common habit for most of my life. No matter if I had to get up at 5 a.m. for a nursing shift or if I could sleep in. I’ve also never been a morning person. I’m groggy if I get up before 9 a.m., or well … that’s the way it used to be when I’d at least sleep for several hours at a time.

I think my sleeping problems started when I began working in the ER at the hospital in 2002. I’ve been a nurse since 1992, but in those first 10 years on the job I’d never had to do a night shift. Suddenly I was expected to do at least two night shifts per week … and not just an 8 hour night shift. No … a 12 hour night shift.

My night shifts were always at the end of my run of shifts and it would take ALL of my days off for me to get back to a normal sleep at night schedule. Just in time for those early morning shifts at the beginning of my run of shifts.

Then of course in mid-2005 my Crohn’s really started acting up and by the end of the year I was off work on medical leave (and still am since my Crohn’s hasn’t settled down at all).

While I’ve been off work I’ve kept myself busy on the computer. Writing blogs and starting more blogs and websites. Hey it’s been not only a way to pass the time but a way to earn the income I’m not making by working full time as a nurse.

I’d stay up later and later because my pain is always worse from evening onward into the night. So pain is a factor in my not sleeping well and or putting me off a normal sleep schedule. However filling my time by being on the computer working on my sites just keeps my mind active and as a result I don’t settle down to sleep at a decent time – or at all most of the time these last few weeks.

Of course now it seems to be getting worse.

I did go to a sleep clinic a couple of years ago. I knew I had a sleep problem. They put my light sleep down to my pain. Of course my time in the sleep clinic was a horrible mess as they tried to make me go to bed early and since I was in pain and couldn’t even take my mind off of it by reading for a while I simply didn’t sleep for hours. I finally slept at the clinic for about half an hour!

I think it’s time I talk with my doctor about my sleep problems again and maybe (shudder) go back to the sleep clinic again.

In the meantime I think I’ll try to turn the computer off my midnight at the latest and see if that helps my mind slow down and helps me get to sleep.

At this point I feel so sleep deprived that I’m sometimes not sure that I’m making sense. Sad eh?

Do you have trouble sleeping? Or have you had trouble sleeping in the past? What helps you get to sleep?
