Dying to finish our renovation jobs!

March 10, 2008 by Tricia

I’m still stuck lying on the couch today. My back is still aching terribly.

It was a bit better at 5 a.m. I’d fallen asleep on the couch with a heating pad set on medium under my back and that seemed to have loosened up my muscles. Now though it’s back to being very painful to move around. Grrr

So I’m spending my time looking at the computer. Typing away at a few posts and also doing some online shopping at places like directbuy. Well … I’m just window shopping really. I’m trying to get some ideas for the house. You know for when we finally finish renovating our living room dining room and also for when we begin to renovate our basement.

I hope we can started on those projects soon. I’m so tired of living in a half finished house it’s not funny!

Have you been stuck living in a house with a half finished reno job for an extended period of time?

Oh my back!

March 9, 2008 by Tricia

I really did my back in yesterday with all the shoveling of snow that I ended up doing. I think I went out and shoveled four times for a total of about five to five and a half hours.

By the last outing at 1 in the morning I had to shovel hunched over as my lower back was in spasms.

Today I can barely move. It takes me a few minutes to get up in order to walk around and walking up the stairs is excruciating. I’ve spent most of the day lying on the couch with my legs bent. Oh and I’ve taken a lot of aspirin to try to take down any inflammation in my back.

My back doesn’t bother me too often luckily. Only when I really over do it. I’m actually surprised it doesn’t bother me more often as I seem to have been born with a congenital defect. Two of my lumbar vertebrae are fused on one side. Like I said I was born with this problem. It’s really fun when I’ve had to have a spinal tap as the fusion is right where they usually try to stick that big needle in your back!

I just need to wait until my back clicks back into place. I hope it shifts back into place soon!

Time to replace our mailbox

March 9, 2008 by Tricia

One of these days we’re going to get around to getting a new mailbox for our home. The one we currently have came with our house when we bought it, but over the past two years it’s started acting up. It squeaks when we open the lid and then the lid sticks up after we take the mail out.

I’d like to get something that looks nice against the red brick of our house.

If you’re looking for a new mailbox you might want to check out the mailboxes at Seattleluxe.com.

They have a wide selection of mailboxes. There are both residential and commercial styles.

Seattleluxe even has an assortment of anti-theft mailboxes that would go a long way towards protecting one from identity theft!

There’s literally thousands of mailboxes to choose from including multi-unit styles and unique designs. You can even purchase custom mailboxes or personalize them.

Perhaps I’ll find a mailbox that suits our home at SeattleLuxe. Visit their site if you’ve been thinking of replacing your mailbox too.

Longing for some greenery!

After all the snow and ice storms this week, and of course after shoveling snow for approximately five hours yesterday and early this morning I’m tired of seeing white everywhere. I’d like nothing more than to see some green (yes green money too would be nice!).

I really can’t wait for Spring and better weather to arrive. As I write this post I’m lying on the couch. My back is aching from all the shoveling I did. Actually it’s not just aching, it’s spasming. Ow! I sure hope it’s better in the morning when I get up!

The photo above was taken last year I believe. It’s one of my hostas. I’d taken the photo while I was outside looking at the garden as it rained lightly. I think I took quite a few photos that day of plants and flowers with raindrops on them.

So were you hit by all the snow storms passing through Eastern North America? Are you more than ready for spring after that storm? I sure am! It feels like winter won’t ever go away. Maybe I should just embrace winter and look for some Winter Park real estate instead of pining for spring?

Gardeners, Plant and Nature lovers can join in every Sunday, visit As the Garden Grows for more information. GTS participants remember to check in at As the Garden Grows each week so that we’ll know you made a new post!

It’s official – My brother-in-law is insane!

March 7, 2008 by Tricia

My brother in law is currently driving from Chicago through a massive snow storm to Brantford, Ontario.

This is the guy who’s afraid to fly so whenever he comes to the Toronto area he always drives. Last year when we drove to Chicago I think it took us close to 12 hours to get there and maybe 10.5 to get back. So during a snow storm that’s raging the whole way it will probably end up taking him 16 to 20 hours. Flying of course wouldn’t do him much good anyway if he would fly as I’m sure there’ll be a lot of cancellations over the next 24 hours. We’re expecting about 30 cm of snow!

Why is he risking getting into an accident?

Well … last weekend one of his best friends brother was murdered in Brantford. He was apparently stabbed by someone that lived in he and his wifes home while he slept. I likely met the man at some point in the past, but I can’t remember him, unfortunately.

The funeral was held earlier in this week. We didn’t go because 1. Chris had to work and 2. We’ve been having major ice storms here and driving from Toronto to Brantford there’s a really bad area (the Hamilton Mountain) and we always have major problems there during storms.

My brother-in-law is of course coming up to see his friend. His friend is not doing well and I’m sure he’s not up to having visitors, but it looks like Chris’ brother is insisting on coming to see him.

Now how is that family going to feel if my brother-in-law gets into a major accident and is injured or even killed?

I can fully understand why he wants to come back home and see his friend, but driving under these conditions when you don’t absolutely have to is just nuts.

Of course now that my brother in law is coming down Chris will feel compelled to drive through the raging storm later tonight or early tomorrow to see his brother and also visit with their old friend. Chris BTW doesn’t know the friend or his brother all that well, but I’m certain he’ll go because he’ll feel obligated since his brother came from such a distance to see a friend.
