Use a BrightBox to keep the symptoms of SAD away!

October 19, 2007 by Tricia

Do you live in an the Northern Hemisphere? Do you find yourself becoming depressed, more tired that usual and or seem to lack energy through the winter months? Perhaps you even have cravings for foods that are high in carbs and sugars in the winter time?

If you suffer from any of the seasonal affective disorder symptoms I’ve listed it’s possible that you might be affected by a mild to severe form of seasonal affective disorder.

Recent studies have shown that up to 25% of the people who live above or below 30 degrees of the equator may suffer from at least a mild form of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

You may or may not realize this, but exposure to light affects our bodies sleep/awake cycles as well as the secretion of the hormone Melatonin which is secreted by our pineal gland. Our Melatonin levels can also affect the actions of our pituitary gland as well as our adrenaline, serotonin and dopamine levels.

If we are only exposed to low levels of light for a period of time our bodies can begin to secrete too much Melatonin and since Melatonin is one of the hormones that brings on the desire to sleep we might have the desire to sleep more often than normal and our moods might be affected as well.

Excuse me if I got into hormones a little too much there. I find it fascinating how our bodies can be thrown off so easily simply by not being exposed to high enough light levels! I also find this topic fascinating because I keep reptiles (box turtles at the moment) and exposure to the full spectrum of light is very important to their health as well for a variety of reasons.

The symptoms of SAD can easily be relieved through the use of SAD light therapy. In fact, the symptoms of SAD can be dramatically reduced after just a few days of light therapy.

brightbox.gif A UK company has developed and thoroughly tested the BrightBox. It’s what is known as a SAD light box. On the left you’ll see an image of their easy to use and easy to transport light box.

People who suffer from SAD can use the BrightBox for 30 minutes a day in order to keep the symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder at bay. If you look through the sites gallery you’ll see people using the Brightbox in front of computers, at their desks or even at the dinner table with their family!

If you are interested in learning more about Seasonal Affective Disorder, the BrightBox and or connecting with other SAD sufferers please visit the BrightBox site.

Ok now I’m mad

October 19, 2007 by Tricia

We got our passports yesterday.

Unfortunately I didn’t get to see them until my husband came home from work today because he’d met our mailman, a friend, as he walked to work yesterday morning and ended up getting our passports from the mailman on the street.

He then brought our passports to work, left them in the bosses office and couldn’t bring them home last night because he boss left before he did – locking her office door and thus making it impossible for Chris to bring the passports home.

So I get the passports today at about 6:30 pm. What do I see when I open mine up? My place of birth information is listed wrong!

We’re leaving on November 8th! That doesn’t leave much time to get this fixed!

I immediately tried calling the 1-800 number for the passport office and I spoke with one of the Passport officers. I was told I’ll have to go to the main Passport office in Toronto to get this fixed and that yes, they’ll put a rush on it.

But what if it’s not done on time? I was so happy that our passports had arrived and now I’ve got a big problem!

My proper place of birth was written on my passport application, plus they also had a good photocopy of my birth certificate. What the heck are all the registration numbers on official I.D’s for anyway if they don’t check and then double check all this information?

I was told by the passport officer on the phone that the way I’d written my birthplace name it did sort of look like the wrong birthplace that they’d listed. Still … aren’t they also supposed to check the birth certificate? You know – the official documentation? WTF?

This makes me wonder how well they check everything else?

Grrrrrr!

If you could see me right now you’d see steam coming out of my ears! I’m so mad!

Should I go shopping while in Vegas?

October 19, 2007 by Tricia

I can’t believe it’s the nineteenth of October already! Our trip to Las Vegas is coming up fast! Two and a half weeks from now we’ll be in that busy city! Good thing our passports arrived yesterday huh?

I know I’m going to be at blogging conventions and I probably won’t have a lot of time to do much other than attend the conventions and perhaps some of the places along the strip where we are staying, but if I can I’d like to do a little shopping.

With our Canadian dollar being higher than the US dollar I might be able to find some fantastic deals.

When I was searching for a hotel for us to stay in I noticed that only about 10 miles away from the strip there’s a big outlet mall. I wonder if any other bloggers that are going to the convention might be interested in a shopping excursion?

I need new clothes! Plus maybe I can get a few Christmas gifts out of the way too? Chris has always liked playing golf, perhaps I could find some Mizuno golf clubs for him at a discount? I’m also still looking for a macro and a telescopic lens for my SLR camera and I’m pretty sure that they are cheaper in the US than they are here in Canada … yeah, maybe I’ll come back with some new toys!

Coming out of hiding

October 19, 2007 by Tricia

Some of you know that I’ll be going to a blogging convention in November. I’m going to BlogWorld first and then I’ll be attending P0stieCon.

Some time over the summer I was asked to be part of a panel at P0stiecon. I still don’t really know what this will involve other than I won’t be on stage all by myself.

Well earlier this week one of the folks in charge of P0stiecon got in touch with me and told me that they’d need a photo and a bio for a program pamphlet they were preparing.

Yikes!

A photo?

I’m the one behind the camera – never in front of it! Not to mention the fact that I simply hate having my photo taken.

Well my time ran out and I had to hand in a photo. I still don’t even know if I handed it in, in time or not.

Last night my husband got behind the camera and took a number of photos of me. I mean a lot of photos! I really didn’t like many of them. I haven’t been feeling very well for about two weeks and had in fact been sleeping just before our photo session. My eyes are puffy in a number of the photos. My husband managed to capture me with my eyes closed or my mouth is a strange position a number of times, but if you take enough photos eventually you’ll manage to take a few decent ones.

So I figured since I’ll finally have a chance to meet other bloggers in about three weeks I might as well come out of hiding and give you a little peek.

So here you go. This is me:

SourceTix.com has tickets for events throughout North America

October 18, 2007 by Tricia

I think it’s always a great idea to know of a few online sites where you can find tickets to major events. SourceTix.com is definitely a site to check out.

SourceTix.com offers a comprehensive inventory of Theatre Tickets, concert tickets, and sports tickets.

The site has recently been redesigned. I’m not familiar with it’s former layout, but I found SourceTix.com’s current layout to be quite easy to use. There are menu buttons under the page header that will take site visitors directly to the sites home page, sports, concert or theater ticket listing sections. There’s also a menu on the left side of the page with expanded listings for each of the main ticket categories and a search box.

I actually like the fact that visitors can easily search for event tickets by city. It appears that visitors can search for tickets pretty much anywhere in North America.

As someone who’s going to be traveling to another city in the near future I appreciate the ability to search for tickets throughout North America. Who knows, perhaps I’ll spend some time on the site and see if I can find tickets for some events in Las Vegas in November. I’d love to see one of the shows in Vegas while I’m there.

You’ll be able to find tickets for upcoming future events and even to sold out or hard to get events. For example, I live in Toronto and even thought the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team isn’t doing so hot games are almost always sold out. They have a strong fan base and it’s always hard to get tickets. I checked the listings for the leafs and SourceTix.com has tickets for Saturday and other future games! Unbelievable.

I just told my husband and he had me check for tickets for a game which should be popular with the fans – the Toronto Maple Leafs Vs. Montreal Canadiens November 13th and yes, there are tickets. That impressed my husband to no end.

When searching for concert or theater tickets you can search by top sellers, top venues, by specific locations such as Broadway, off Broadway and in other ways.

No matter what your entertainment interests are SourceTix.com is a site to bookmark and keep in mind the next time you want to go to an event.

Oh and at this time SourceTix.com is offering a 2007 promotion for 5% off tickets. Just use the following code “source07” when you order tickets.
