Old Friends

October 5, 2007 by Tricia

Last night around 6 pm as I was waiting for Chris to get home from work the phone rang.

I always look at the display on the phone to see who’s calling and if I don’t recognize the number I often don’t answer it as it’s usually someone trying to sell me something or lately one of our Provincial political parties asking “Can we count on you?”.

So I looked at the telephone display and I saw the words “the Jewelery Doctors”. At first I thought why is a jewelry store calling me? I’m not in the business anymore and the only reason I could think of was that maybe something happened to my sister who’s still in the jewelry trade and they were calling me to help her.

Then a little light went on and I remembered that the Jewelery Doctor was our friend old Bob. Chris and I used to work in the same building as him when we were both jewelers. That’s how we all became good friends.

If you ever need custom made jewelery you must visit Bob. His work is not just “designer inspired jewelry”. No, it is designer jewelry. He can make absolutely anything you can think of and his designs are amazing. I didn’t do the same kind of work as Bob. Chris’ work in the trade was closer to Bobs and I know he aspired to create beautiful pieces like our friend bob.

We had a nice talk on the phone. I probably haven’t talked to him for about a year since he’s a hard man to get a hold of. Chris, in fact, had been downtown on Tuesday when he went to submit our Passport applications to the passport office and he’d dropped into the jewelry trade building that we used to work in to visit with my sister and some of our old friends. Unfortunately Bob wasn’t around when he’d dropped in, but he heard that Chris had been there so he was calling to say hello.

Unfortunately Chris wasn’t home when he called and when Chris tried to call him back he’d already left the office.

It’ll probably be several more months before we all end up talking again.

That’s one nice thing about good friends. Even if you don’t manage to talk or get together often it’s easy to fall right back into place once you do get together.

Cavemen are ok

October 5, 2007 by Tricia

In mid-September I wrote a post about an upcoming new series. The post was about the new show Cavemen. Well, the show premiered on Tuesday night and thanks to us having a PVR I’m only just now getting around to watching it.

I said in my original post about the show that it was either going to suck because the idea was strange or that the writing would be so good that it would be an excellent show.

There’s more normal Homo Sapiens in the show than there are cavemen, and the cavemen consist of two brothers and an old friend living together in an apartment in San Diego.

If you forget for a moment that the guys are cavemen it’s just like watching a fairly good sitcom about three single guys living together, working and trying to find love in the big city. Well, one of the guys, Joel, has found love. He’s dating a Sape – short for Homo Sapien which is frowned upon in Caveman culture.

In the premiere episode he breaks the news about his new girlfriend to his brother and friend. It’s a big deal!

Oh and like any sitcom with three guys living together one is practical and tries to hold everything together – that’s Joel the one with the Homo Sapien girlfriend. One of the other guys, Nick, is kind of neurotic. He’s been working on his dissertation for a year and hasn’t written a thing. He’s the guy who seems to like analyzing things. Then there’s the screw up, Andy. He’s pining for the girlfriend he left back home and he seems sort of hopeless. I think Joel and Nick will spend a lot of time looking out for Andy.

I don’t know if this show will make it or not, but I liked it enough to watch it again.

Did you see the show? What did you think of it?

What a busy night!

October 5, 2007 by Tricia

I can’t believe how busy I was last night.

A while after Chris came home he went upstairs and started re-arranging furniture in our smallest spare bedroom. He then began to put our new elliptical trainer together. I offered to help him of course, but he said he was ok doing it all on his own. I did end up giving him a hand here and there holding things as he connected them.

Anyway, while he was busy upstairs turning our spare bedroom into a mini exercise room, I did some work on my computer and then I went into the kitchen and cleared the double kitchen sinks and counter so I could prepare dinner.

When I cook I can’t stand a messy kitchen so I always clean everything up before I begin to cook and then I clean everything I use as I go so by the time dinner is served and eaten all that’s left is our dinner plates and utensils.

Why I do that I don’t know. It seems like a strange habit even to me, but I swear I’m one of the cleanest cooks you’d ever meet!

I was also taping the multitude of Thursday night shows on the PVR at the same time, but I had to keep running in the room to check to see how full the PVR was getting because we had a lot of shows on there from last week that we hadn’t gotten around to watching yet. I ended up having to delete about five shows just so I could tape all of last nights shows! It wouldn’t have been such a problem if we weren’t both busy doing other things and had been watching some of the previously taped shows as new ones taped – and then deleting them of course.

Chris took a long time upstairs! Neither of us thought the trainer would take long to put together, but between moving the furniture around to make room for the elliptical trainer and then putting it together I think Chris was upstairs for more than two hours! What a great guy for doing all of that for me, eh? Of course he’s going to use the machine too. I made sure he tested it out and liked how it worked as I was choosing which one to buy. We both might as well use it.

Along with making dinner and cleaning the kitchen I managed to finish watering the garden, and all the indoor plants. I even managed to set up a months worth of daily posts for my photoblog! I’ve been neglecting that blog (and others) lately. Only posting a couple times a week at most and traffic has died down. I’m hoping that getting back to posting new shots on it daily will bring the visitors back. I’m so happy that wordpress has auto-publishing.

All in all Chris and I had a very productive evening. Now I’m looking forward to working out in my new “fitness room”.

It will take me a while to build up some endurance on the elliptical, so my plan is to use the machine for about ten minutes at a time a few times a day for the first few days. It definitely gets my heart rate up so hopefully those little bursts of activity will reve up my metabolism and help me start on my way to getting back into shape. (quickly!)

What do you think? Is that a good plan? Anyone else have an Elliptical trainer at home or use one regularly at the gym?

In the last 36 hours I’ve spent a LOT of money!

October 4, 2007 by Tricia

Ahhhh!

I was just adding up my receipts and in the last two days I’ve spent a lot of money.

My most expensive purchase was of course my husband and I’s trip to Las Vegas in November. I booked us a hotel room for three nights and paid for return flights. I think I got a fairly good deal at the cost of about $1700. Of course I’d be a whole lot happier if that were several hundred dollars cheaper.

You see, my husband and I are going to the Blogworld convention and also attending P0stieCon. I expect to have a lot of fun meeting bloggers that I’ve only known through talking with them on the Internet, learning how to blog better and how to be more successful at monetizing our sites.

It will also be my husband and I’s first trip to Las Vegas so we’re excited to see the city too. The trip is only two weeks after our 13th wedding anniversary too so if we can we’ll do something special just for us too. (Like win some money at the Casino??? 😉 )

Since we’re going to a blogging convention I figured that if they provide Wi-Fi at the convention I’ll probably have my laptop with me and might even do a bit of live blogging while at some of the conferences. So the next big purchase was a 12 cell battery for my laptop. It came with a 6 cell lithium that has never held it’s charge for more than an hour or hour and a half when unplugged. So I hope the new battery will give me at least 3 or more hours of unplugged time.

I believe they are supposed to last even longer than that, but whether I’m plugged in or not I’ve always got two browsers and my email program open so perhaps that eats up the resources.

Other expenses … well … as you know I’ve been stuck at home sick for almost two years. Many days I don’t even go outside into my lovely garden let alone work in it so I’m terribly out of shape.

I’ve gained a bit of weight due to my inactivity. Nothing too bad as it’s very hard to become drastically overweight when one has Crohn’s, but enough that I can feel it. Also, the lack of exercise has caused me to lose a lot of muscle tone. I can really feel it when I get outside in the garden to do some work or even when Chris and I go out shopping or do other things around town and I must walk around for hours.

My pain doctor is always telling me to get outside and walk each day, but after the two very nasty falls I had last year I’m hesitant to go for much of a walk on my own and with my husbands shift work I can’t always count on him to have the energy or time to go out walking with me. So walking outside is not really in the cards for me right now. My falls were caused by either my innate clumsiness and or the fact that I sometimes get dizzy when I walk around. I’m not walking alone. Sorry.

So the next best thing to help me perhaps loose a little weight over the next month, but most definitely tone up my muscles, was to get some exercise equipment in the house.

So last night when Chris came home from work we went out and I bought one of those exercise balls and and some of the hand held sand weighted balls that go with the ball and pilates type of exercise routines.

I also bought an elliptical trainer. I’m sure my knees will whine when I start using it, but since my muscles are out of shape and due to this darn Crohn’s my knees are already whining.

So I guess I’ve spent about $2,700 or so in the last day and a half. We bought other things last night too and that’s why last nights spending ended up being close to $1000 but the bulk of the money spent in the last 36 hours has all had to do with our upcoming Vegas trip.

Just wait until I go clothes shopping!

Hey, I want to have fun while I’m there and I know getting in a little better shape will give me more stamina and boost my self confidence too. Hey getting my muscles toned up might even lessen some of that klutziness that I was born with too. Gawd only knows I don’t want all my fellow bloggers to see me “Pull a Trish” as my acts of clumsiness are fondly known in these parts.

Oh and I almost forgot. Our muffler. Well the cars manifold had a hole in it for the last year, and Chris only got it half fixed a few months ago. We still had that bad muffler noise. So on Monday he took the car in and had the muffler replaced so add that to our spending spree too! Argh.

So wish me luck in my effort to look and feel a little better for my November trip! Those of you who meet me can let me know if my efforts paid off or not.

Oh and if anyone wants to contribute to the “Trish depleted her bank account fund” well … go right ahead. LOL

Automate your workplaces time and attendance calculations

October 4, 2007 by Tricia

If you own or manage a business you might be interested in taking a look at Kronos Automated Time and Attendance software.

The old saying “Time is Money” certainly applies when it comes to managing your employees attendance records and overtime hours.

Kronos’ Time and Attendance software will not only save you some money by eliminating the need for paper time sheets or other products that you must purchase regularly in order to keep track of your employees work hours, but it will also decrease the time spent calculating each employees hours and attendance. This would free up the business owners time or the employee hired to do this task and allow them to be more productive in other areas.

I know when I’ve worked for companies that manually calculated each employees hours and pay there were always errors. There were forgotten overtime or allowances for working a certain amount of hours, sometimes days that I had worked were skipped and went unpaid, and vacation pay was occasionally incorrect as well.

All of these payroll errors just make more work for the person manually calculating the timesheets and cause employee frustration.

Kronos has created four different Time and Attendance software programs.

One of the programs is named “Workforce TimeKeeper” and it’s a web-based application that will allow businesses to eliminate errors that are often associated with tracking a companies workforces time and attendance.

The second program is called Timekeeper Central and it’s a client-server solution that’s been designed to help small companies manage, collect and distribute time and attendance data automatically.

Then there is the Kronos iSeries Timekeeper which is a time and attendance application for the IBM iSeries platform.

The final time and attendance solution developed by Kronos is called webTA. This program supports the federal governments unique time and attendance requirements.

As you can see Kronos has created software that will suit any business or organization whether large or small. Each of these programs have been designed to give a business better control over labor costs. The automated system will also allow businesses to apply pay and work related policies consistently across the board.

These seem like great time and attendance keeping solutions to me and I’m sure it would alleviate the headache of manually calculating time sheets for a lot of companies if they were to look into the Kronos Automated Time and Attendance software.
