After seeing my nieces at our family reunion over the long weekend I suspect that it won’t be long before at least two of the girls will be getting married. Each of my nieces brought their boyfriend to meet the family. That’s a big deal!

In fact, my brother paid for the air fare for his two daughters boyfriends so that they could visit with us. Airfare, hotel and meeting the family? Yes, I’m certain there will be weddings soon. Lucky me! An excuse to head out West.

Gurgles and growls are a good thing

September 17, 2007 by Tricia

I didn’t have a very good night last night. I spent the majority of the night in really bad pain. Sometimes when my Crohn’s is acting up I get pain that radiates up into my chest from my abdomen. I’m fairly certain that this occurs only when I have a bowel obstruction and it’s pretty scary because the pain is so intense it’s unbelievable.

Needless to say I spent another night without sleep and this time round I even considered going to the hospital. Of course just as I truly started to considering a hospital visit the pain finally started to subside. When a blockage resolves itself you would not believe the sounds that come from my abdomen. I really must record the gurgles that it makes. It’s so loud! I’ve come to know that the noise means I’m out of danger so I welcome the gurgles

I spent the day recovering and trying to sleep. The darn phone kept ringing though! Who keeps calling with a private long distance number? I do not answer calls who’s numbers I can’t see as it usually ends up being a survey or a “you won” call.

Anyway, that was my exciting day. Now I’m busy playing catch up on my sites!

The ginger colored hunter

September 17, 2007 by Tricia

Each year we have a cat or two or ten that seem to enjoy hanging around our yard through the summer. There’s a few that I see year after year, but there always seems to be a new one or two each year as well.

This year we’ve been seeing a cat, that I’ll simply call “ginger” due to it’s light orange color, hanging around our front and back yard. Well, not just our yard. It likes to crouch down under our “karaoke neighbors” front shrubs, or I see it skulking across other neighbors lawns on most days.

Earlier today when I was looking out an upstairs window I saw Ginger cat lying in my elderly neighbors garden. It was hiding underneath her many pepper plants. If the cat had been slightly darker in color I wouldn’t have even noticed it as it was well hidden, but due to it’s color and the fact that I was looking at from 20 or more feet above I could see it fairly well. I scratched the window screen to see if it would react and ginger cat looked right up at me.

Ever since we’ve moved here we’ve had a number of creatures in our and our neighbors backyard. Raccoons, cats, squirrels, mice and yes I’ve even seen rats! I don’t think we have any rats living in our garden or on our property, but I’m sure some live in our neighbors shed and under the back porch of another neighbor. Mice too of course.

I think Ginger cat was patiently lying in wait for a mouse or rat to cross it’s path.

Prior to realizing what the cat was probably doing I was going to scare the cat out of my neighbors garden, but when it occurred to me that it was likely doing me and my neighbors a service I left it undisturbed. I don’t really like to think about animals hunting one another, but neither do I like the idea of rats and mice running around my yard, so I guess I’m hoping that Ginger cat was successful and had a good meal this afternoon.

I suppose that’s the main reason why I’ve seen so many cats in our yard and our neighbors yards over the years. They really shouldn’t be out – I’m sure they have homes and their owners just let them out. However, if they are going to hang around I hope they are catching animals like the mice and rats that I know would soon overrun the area without some form of pest control.

I should look out my upstairs window more often. I saw a squirrel doing some strange stuff too. I wrote about it on my gardening blog and I’ll link to the post as soon as I publish it.

Fast Water Heater Repair and Maintenance

September 17, 2007 by Tricia

In the few years since we became home owners we’ve been fairly lucky in that none of our major home appliances have broken down. Yet. I always dread the first time the furnace comes on each fall though. Will it work? Will it keep running through the winter? Likewise, the water heater that we were renting from our local power company has yet to give us any trouble.

We have thought of replacing our rented water heater with one that we’d own ourselves. I think in the long run it would probably be cheaper as I still haven’t completely figured out how the power company comes up with the additional charges they add to our account for the water heaters use and rental. Still, whether it’s rented or owned the water heater is one of the home appliances that I’d hate to have break down in the winter time or anytime of year for that matter.

Do you own your water heater? Have you ever had water heater break down? I imagine it would be not only inconvenient, but stressful as well if your water heater were to break down, particular during the cool winter months.

Luckily for those of you who happen to live in California, Oregon and Washington states there’s fastwaterheater.com. This company specializes in Water Heater Repairs and maintenance.

The companies been in business since 1985 and unlike many other service companies they dispatch their technicians the same day if you call before noon! I think that’s great. I mean if your water heaters leaking or stopped working in the dead of winter you want it repaired fast.

Not only does this company maintain and repair water heaters, but they will also install traditional and Tankless Water Heaters too. The Fast Water Heater Company works with all the major manufacturer brands of water heaters.

If you need your water heater maintained or repaired just visit their site to find a service location in your area. For example if you live in Washington you might search for Seattle Water Heater. You’ll then be taken to a page with a local Fast Water Heater company number that you can call or you can fill out a form and make an inquiry via their web page.

Visit the site to learn more about the companies services and if you live in Washington, Oregon or California bookmark the website just in case you need Fast service in the future.

My brown eyed susans are still blooming. They aren’t looking quite as nice as the ones in this photo which was taken in early August, but they are still blooming.

Do you grow Brown eyed susan? (rudbeckia) Each year I have to pull out a number of plants as they spread very easily in my garden. I suppose some of the spread is related to reseeding themselves, but most of the spread that I’ve noticed is from underground roots growing outward. New plants come up on these roots and I end up pulling out quite a few each year as a result.

Gardeners, Plant and Nature lovers can join in every Sunday, visit As the Garden Grows for more information.
