We used to make popcorn all the time

August 6, 2007 by Tricia

I was puttering around cleaning our kitchen cupboards the other day and I came across and appliance we haven’t used for a long time. It was our popcorn machine. We got it as a wedding present way back in 1994!

We used to have movie nights and make popcorn fairly often, but we haven’t used the popcorn machine for a few years now.

When I found the machine that had been tucked into a back corner of a cupboard I thought about making some popcorn for Chris. I can’t eat it myself these days since it aggravates my crohns, but Chris would have enjoyed it if I had made up some popcorn.

Trouble is, if I made some I’d want to eat it. Popcorn was a popular snack on night shifts when I was working at the hospital. It used to drive me nuts when I’d smell it knowing I couldn’t have any. I’m sure it’d do the same if I made some in my own house!

Do you have a popcorn machine? Do you use it?

I’m not sure I can take this anymore

August 6, 2007 by Tricia

I don’t know what’s going on with me and my body. By body I mean my abdomen and the Crohn’s disease that plagues it.

I’ve been in horrible pain for most of the last week. I take medication for the Crohn’s and I take pain meds. Neither seems to be helping much at all.

I have pain all the time, but when it’s really bad it seems to localize itself to my lower right side. The symptoms and pain levels are comparable to someone suffering from appendicitis. If you’ve ever had appendicitis you now know what I’m going through – all the time.

It’s really hard to stay upbeat when you feel this bad.

I don’t know how I’ve managed it, but I’ve been fairly positive in the more than 2.5 years that this Crohn’s flare has been going on. I really try hard to not let it get to me and I keep my mind occupied with other things like my hobbies – gardening, photography, reading, blogging and so on … but if this horrid pain keeps up I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be able to stay positive.

I need a break from the pain.

Time for new shoes

August 6, 2007 by Tricia

I’m sure you’ve noticed when you are in the hospital that a lot of the staff wear running shoes. Why? Well because they are the most comfortable shoes to wear when you’re on your feet all day. They have more support.

I’ve tried the shoes made for nurses in the past and they just weren’t as good as running shoes.

Now, I’m not working in the hospital at the moment. I still have my job but I’m off due to illness. Chris, my husband, on the other hand is an OR attendant and he’s on his feet all day.

It’s time to get him some new shoes! When we’re working we tend to go through running shoes like some people go through socks. He’s started looking for new shoes and I think he might get a pair of Air Jordan running shoes this time around. I don’t think he’s used that brand before but he really likes a couple of the styles.

We’ll probably get him a pair and see how they hold up to being constantly walked in.

Anyone else wear Air Jordan shoes? Are they comfortable? Do they hold up well to a lot of use?

Simple flowers – Simply beautiful

Blue Gentian

Blue Gentian Gentiana septemfida

I’ve been slow to get out and take photos of my blooming plants but the other day I went out for an hour and came back in with 279 photos! All but 4 were keepers.

The photo above is of blue Gentian. It’s a simple flower that blooms once or twice a year. It’s buds are interesting swirled cone shapes and then they open up into these delicate flowers.

The flowers above have a companion. Did you notice the ant?

Musk Mallow Malva moschata

Musk Mallow Malva moschata

The flower above is called Musk Mallow. It’s a North American native plant.

It’s very easy to grow, very hardy and as you can see it produces small delicate beautiful flowers. What more could you ask for in a plant?

Oh I know … did you know that you can eat the flowers and leaves of the musk mallow? The plant even has medicinal properties as well. I also believe that the root of the first flower, gentian is edible. See I grow a lot of plants that are not only beautiful, but edible as well.

This weeks theme is Funky

Honeysuckle Gold Flame

This is my new honeysuckle vine. It’s just about to bloom. I thought the flower buds looked pretty funky so I snapped a pic the other day. Don’t you think it’s a little strange looking?

Bee Balm Monardo aquarius

I also grow Bee Balm. I love the way this plant grows. It’s flowers grow on long stalks and new flowers grow on top of one another. Sometimes a stalk will have three or four flowers in a row.

This flower is fading, but to me it looks pretty funky while in it’s last stages.

The bees and butterflies think so too!
