Site troubles again – anyone know of a good VPS service?

August 31, 2007 by Tricia

Ok so who noticed that all of my blogs on the feverishthoughts.com domain were down from about 9:30 pm until 4 a.m. this morning?

What a PAIN.

Yeah, my site overused CPU resources, again. Or something happened. At least Hostgator, my newish webhost, was able to tell me which domain was affected. I guess I took a lot of hits on the index file of this blog all at once. Either a lot of people tried to visit all at the same time or there was some kind of bot or spam attack going on.

At least this time, with Hostgator, they were nice enough to only shut down my feverishthoughts.com domain. Now that’s got seven blogs on it so the sites being down on it for any length of time isn’t good. However, I still had two of my websites and two blogs up and running while feverishthoughts.com was down.

The last time I had cpu overuse troubles, when I was with another host back in July, they suspended my whole account!

I’m still not sure if this was an attack or if I have traffic problems. My sites are busy … but I’m still not sure that they are busy enough to move to Virtual private hosting (VPS).

Well, just in case this issue crops up again soon I’d better start looking for VPS hosting. If anyone knows of a webhosting company that offers VPS and has very good service I’d appreciate hearing about them.

BTW I certainly hope that my sites behave over the long weekend. We’re having our family reunion so I won’t really be around much. I’ll either be away from home or when I’m here I’ll probably have guests. I don’t want to have my sites go down and have to worry about that while I’m trying to have fun with my family. That would suck.

Morning, Tricia! I have been talking to BlueHost about “professional” hosting because I get the “CPU exceeded” error all the ding-dang time. Yesterday I was helping a new blogger install a plugin, and her host is Liquid Web, which just happens to have a data center right here in my city of Lansing, Michigan. I know they offer dedicated hosting.

BTW, I added you to the blogroll on Table for Five. 🙂 Have a great family reunion!

I really would like to find one also. I have a host I have been happy with (after moving from another host that was no good) but over the years I have learned hosts go bad. I like to have at least 2 hosts I am using so I am familiar with 2 in case I have problems with one then I can switch quickly. I have only switched every couple of years but still… I am now willing to consider VPS even without traffic that really justifies it: if it would just gives me better performance. But that is the trick finding one that actually gives good service and better performance to justify the increased price.

My friend uses bluehost and swears by them. I am on hostican, but my site is only a month old so I haven’t tested them yet. So far I am happy, but we’ll see how good they are once I get some real traffic.

    Hi,
I am starting a Web Design/Hosting company, and we offer full VPS hosting for $10.95 a month. I don’t know how this sounds to you but We haven’t really gone mainstream yet, so we have plenty of server room.
Our Web Site isn’t up yet, (we officially open in 2 weeks) but you can email me at Impact Web Tech {at} gmail {dot} com for more info. Our “blogger” package consists of 4 sub-domains, one domain, 6 email addresses, free WP install, and theme customization. We also have custom packages for a little more. We guarantee 98.99% uptime. We’re based out of Florida, USA and Washington, D.C. USA. Thanks.

Try Managemybox.com. I’ve been looking into different services, Hostgator included, and this one looks good value for money with decent reviews on the web as well.

if you are causing your VPS to run out of CPU resources, you may either need to upgrade the VPS or go full out Dedicated Server? I know dedicated server is much more expensive, but the whole box is yours. No one to shared memory with. Due to the cost this may not be an option for you though.

Hope you find your next host to be more helpful about problems like this.
