My interest in Interior design and the new Home and Garden website

June 11, 2007 by Tricia

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I’m seriously thinking of taking an interior design course. I know there’s some great Interior Design colleges here in the Toronto area but I keep being drawn to ones in the US, like Harrington College of Design. They have so many great courses. Courses that sound like I’d get a quality education and background in interior design if I went there.

I’ve always been interested in home decor, DIY projects and interior design. It all goes together for me. I’ve designed rooms for other people and myself going from tearing down walls, building shelves and other furnishings, using different techniques on the walls and then picking out what furnishings would work best in the newly designed room. I know this is something I could do … it’s just pushing myself to begin taking some courses.

Well, whether I ever do this professionally or not, my new domain that I purchased for my Home and Gardening site – As the Garden Grows, which will eventually move to homeandgardendiva.com will not just be about gardening. No it will reflect more of my passion for interior design and DIY projects. Just wait and see.

I’m really excited about the new site … now if I could turn that excitement into a learning experience at a school that specializes in design I’ll have it made.

    Hi Tricia,

I too am a nurse (and speech pathologist) with a huge interest in interior design. I am not working in the medical field anymore due to a long-term illness, but I do have a blog on cooking and decorating. Stop by an visit if you get some time!

Let me know when you get your new site up and I’ll be glad to put up a link for you. Hope you are feeling better.

    Karen

If your only interested in this as a hobby I would recommend either going for interior decorator, this usually only takes a year, and you learn the basics or you should check out associate degrees. If you think you want to do this professionally, go ahead and get that bachelors degree.

Before you spend all that money though check and see what the qualifications are for a designer in your area. I know in Michigan we don’t require an education to be called a designer, but in some states you do. I’m not sure what Canada requires or if it’s different per area.

Hello Tricia, I think you have an innate skills in the designing world. Your passion revolves around interior design with good experience already.

Much better if your will pursue on your idea of going to school because students who attend college and study interior design are always ahead of the curves and trends.

These students are taught a wide range of skills and information they will need to work after school and continue on in this profession.
Those who decide against school and try to start working in interior design are missing out on a number of things.

I did an interior decorating course a few years back – which lead to workinng as a painter and a designer for 8 years (before I changed jobs again). I must say they were great years and the satisfaction you get is amazing.

I say, go for it Tricia!!!
