Save energy, save money, cut C02 emissions

May 5, 2007 by Tricia

I know that Earth Day has passed and I really wish that I’d come across this great article about lowering your homes carbon emissions earlier as I would have written about it for Earth Day.

The article discusses 20 different ways in which you can reduce your use of energy and thus the amount of carbon emissions that your produce in your home. I’m happy to say that Chris and I already do almost every single item on the list and in fact I could probably add to that list too.

I would hope that almost everyone is participating in a recycling program in their area. It’s so easy to do once you get used to it. Here in Toronto recycling is the law. Every second week the city picks up all of our recycled items such as cans, plastic containers, bottles and paper products. From April through to December the city also picks up yard waste – such as plant trimmings, leaves and items like that. Depending on the exact time of year this happens weekly or biweekly. They also pick up Green garbage weekly.

Green garbage is everything from table scraps, to napkins of serviettes that we perhaps use while we are eating, tissues and things like that. Now, we do have a composter in our backyard so we don’t give the city all of our scraps, but we do have something to put out weekly.

The article that I read says that by participating in a recycling program and by purchasing items made with recycled content, just an increase of 10% alone, will save the average household 91 kg C02 over a years time. Considering that recycling programs are mandatory in many municipalities, and that many stores sell products made of recycled content I would think that just about everyone is doing this to some extent.

You know what’s really strange. I was going to talk about this anyway before I found this article because something happened earlier this week that made me think about writing a post about saving energy. Finding this article just reminded me to get that post done.

You see, earlier this week we had a nice young girl knock on our door. She was working with our city in a program called TAPS TORONTO that’s being provided by the Toronto Hydro Electric System and Enbridge (a natural gas company). Absolutely free of charge she gave us a new shower head for our shower that would reduce water usage, a kitchen facet aerator, a bathroom faucet aerator, foam pipe insulation (to wrap around a hot water pipe and prevent heat loss), and four 14 watt Compact fluorescent light bulbs. Well probably save more than $100 a year just by using all of those items.

It’s funny too because we always seem to manage to get free compact fluorescent bulbs each year. We started using them about four years ago, and every light in our home that can be fitted with one of these energy saving light bulbs has one in it. They last forever too – much longer than regular incandescent bulbs. I think each year we manage to get 4 to 8 free.

Along with discussing the use of low flow shower heads which we were given the other day, and which we already use in our home, the article states that by using energy efficient light bulbs such as the compact fluorescent light bulbs that we just got for free you can cut C02 emissions.

If you aren’t already using the compact fluorescent bulbs think about trying them. The light they provide is very similar to that of the incandescent bulbs that you are likely still using, but considering that most of these compact fluorescent bulbs are 12 -15 watts compared to the normal incandescent bulbs 60 to 75 watts you’ll save both energy, money and C02 emissions by using them.

Just replace your incandescent bulbs as they burn out with the new fluorescent bulbs. If you only change three of them over the next year you’ll save 136 KG of CO2 and €44 (£30 or $60 USD). Wow, I didn’t even realize you could save that much just by switching three bulbs over. Chris and I must be saving hundreds of dollars with at least 90% of our lighting now being compact fluorescent lighting.

Go have a look at the article and then let me know how many of those tips you are already doing. We are doing all but #19 (update insulation in home), but we’re working on that one.

Washer or dryer acting up? Check the Appliance repair forums first

May 5, 2007 by Tricia

forum-logo.gif Don’t you just hate it when an appliance suddenly stops working? Naturally it always seems to happen with little warning, and you only discover that there’s a problem when you are about to use the appliance. For example, you might have just finished washing your clothes and when you put them in the dryer you discover that the dryer isn’t working? Or perhaps it’s your dishwasher, Air conditioner, microwave, stove or refrigerator that stops working.

The immediate thought that goes through most of our heads when we discover that a major appliance is not working properly or has stopped working is that we’ll have to purchase a new one, or get an expensive repair service in to fix the appliance. Most of the time we are not financially prepared to do this so it causes a lot of stress, doesn’t it?

While both of those scenarios could end up being true, why don’t you try visiting the Appliance Repair Forums first and see if you might be able to fix the problem yourself.

The appliance repair forums will likely be most appealing to those who are natural do it yourselfers, but even if you don’t think you are that handy check it out first before you call the repairman or go out and buy a new fridge. Sometimes all you need is one small part that’s easy to replace in order to get an appliance back in working order.

I’ll give you an example. When we first bought our house we were happy to find that we had a built in humidifier on our furnace. Well, it worked for the first year or two that we had the house, but then it suddenly stopped working. As I said earlier our first thoughts when we discovered it wasn’t working was that we’d have to purchase a new furnace humidifier.

We took a bit of time and looked into the problem, talked to some people online and in some of the DIY stores and discovered that motor breakdown was common on these things and that we probably just need to buy a new motor for the humidifier. We did, and it was easy to install and our furnace humidifiers been working ever since. The motor wasn’t expensive, certainly cheaper than buying a new furnace humidifier, so we saved ourselves a lot of money by doing the simple repair ourselves.

Now, the Appliance Repair forums doesn’t discuss furnace humidifiers- or at least I didn’t see that topic as I browsed through the forums, and I was just using that as an example to show you how easy an appliance repair might turn out to be. The Appliance Repair Forums does discuss all of the major household appliances that tend to be costly to repair when they do break down.

If you own a microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, garbage disposal, stove or range, dryer, air conditioner, or refrigerator why not bookmark this site just in case your appliance breaks down. If and when it does, visit the forum and get advice from the appliance repair experts. The forum is completely free to use although to ask a question you will have to register on the forum first.

Browsing through the forums I’ve seen questions such as how to tighten a refrigerator door handle, icemakers, and the fridge being too warm, in the washer forums I discovered questions about the spin cycle not starting automatically, an unbalanced basket and the detergent door leaking water out the front among many other questions. Each question had a number of answers as the various appliance service technicians that frequent the site tried to help the appliance owner.

If and when you ever have to visit the Appliance repair forums be sure provide as much information about the problem that you are having with the appliance, as well as it’s brand and model number if possible. Your question will be answered by an actual appliance service technician.

Consider bookmarking this site. You never know when you might need it, and getting help on the forum could end up saving you a lot of money.

Grey’s Anatomy debut’s Addisons new show

May 4, 2007 by Tricia

So, who watched Grey’s Anatomy last night? I didn’t realize that it was going to be a two hour show, but after watching it i can see why. They kept flitting back and forth between regular Grey’s anatomy and as far as I know the as yet unnamed new show that Addison (Kate Walsh) will be moving over to next season.

I kind of liked what I saw of the new show … it was a good introduction to the characters and I certainly like all of the actors that will be in it. Mmmmm Still, as my husband said it’s got a soap opera kind of feel to it. He compared it to Desperate Housewives which he dislikes. I don’t think the new show will be quite like D.H. but from what I can see it’s not going to be at all like Grey’s Anatomy either. I can also tell you that neither show comes close to a real life hospital either!

I found myself teary eyed several times throughout the show. Yes I’m a sap! Too many of the story lines hit close to home I guess. Chris and I want to have a baby and due to my illness it’s not happening so it kind of hit me when Addison was going through her emotions when she found out she couldn’t have children.

Also, the death of Meredith’s step mother hit me too. The anguish on her lost fathers face got to me, and I could understand his anger at the medical system first being told that it was just a simple infection and not understanding how it could get so out of control.

I keep wondering if George (T.R. Knight) is going to leave the show. I mean if he transfers to another hospital … well it’s not the one that Addison will be working in next season so where does that leave him? If he does leave I wonder if has to do with all the ruckus about Isaiah Washington’s remarks earlier this year when he called him a fag? You gotta wonder.

What did you think of the episode?

Make life easier – schedule household chores fairly with Chore Buster

May 4, 2007 by Tricia

Tired of being the person who does the majority of household chores? Wish the kids would either actually do their chores or stop fighting over them? Why not try this great new free site Chore Buster. This site was created in order to help you generate chore schedules that will be doled out fairly to all the members of your household.

How cool is that?

Whether you live alone and just want to make sure that you remember to clean your stove once a month, turn your mattress or wash the floors twice a week; or live in a household with kids of different ages who should be able to do some chores I’m sure you’ll find that Chore Buster is just what you’ve always wanted, even if you didn’t know that you did.

Using Chore Buster you can easily create a free account, add the members of your family who are able to do chores and assign tasks that should be done, daily, weekly or monthly. Chore Buster then automatically schedules the tasks according to the persons ability or availability and rotates them through the list of household members so that they are distributed fairly. So if your daughter washes the dishes tomorrow evening, your son might get the chore the next night and so on.

I think this is great. I didn’t create a chore list for my husband and I because we are actually pretty good about household chores. We both do just about everything. I think the only chores we defer to the other are 1. garbage – he’s usually the one to take it out, but I’ll often gather it up, and 2. He doesn’t like cleaning the bathrooms and doesn’t do the best job when he does do it so I end up doing it, but otherwise we’re pretty fair in this house. I may however still sign up and assign chores – at least it would help me remember to do the chores that only get done once in a while.

I did however go through the hand Chore Buster Demo to see what it was all about so that I could tell you all about it. First of course you should register for an account. Once you’re ready to get started begin by adding the members of your household who can do chores. Once you are done adding your family members you can edit each persons listing and assign a task level of normal, or only 75%, 50%, or 25% of the regular household chores. Like this:

editpeople.jpg

Once you’ve finished adding and editing the members of your home you can move on to list all the chores that regularly need to be done around the home. Chore Buster has a handy already created list of chores that would need to be done in most homes that you can import into your account to save on your typing. Once you have listed all of the chores you can set about editing each one:

editchores.jpg

As you can see you can choose to not assign certain chores to particular people, decide how often it should be assigned, and give it a skill level.

Once you are done adding all the members of the household, editing each person, adding chores and editing them as well, make sure that you have checked that at least one member of the household is sent the list of chores weekly or even daily.

I can see this taking a while to set up properly, especially if there are several people in a home with varying skill levels, but think about it – how much time do you spend assigning chores now, or being frustrated when the kids start fighting over chores. Once you’ve spent the time to set this up you can pretty much forget about it. You’ll get a regular email with a new list of chore assignments and the tasks will be rotated through the members of the household so everything will be distributed fairly. No more fighting! No more wasted time assigning tasks!

What do you think? Are you going to give it a try?

The lengths people go to …

May 3, 2007 by Tricia

I didn’t realize that people took me so seriously about some of my blogrolls. Lately I’ve had a string of people wanting to get on my “I am Canadian” blogroll and they’ve been writing me to me with proof of just how Canadian they really are. LOL

Really I’m not that stringent with the rules. I can often tell by how the person writes or some of the cities or cultural references that they make on their sites that they really are Canadian. I mean we are a unique culture even if we do sometimes struggle with the onslaught of American culture that comes our way 24 hours a day.

We spell words differently. That’s right this site is not full of spelling mistakes like some people probably think. We do spell many of our words the British way, after all we are still part of the Commonwealth, even if we’ve formally declared our independence. So when I slip and spell words like honour, behaviour, neighbourhood, cheque, barbecue, favour, jewelery and so on they are not spelling mistakes.

We have phrases that are particularly Canadian, and passions that go unmatched against our American counterparts. Hockey and beer come to mind.

There are also foods that are unique to Canadian culture such as Beaver tails, peameal bacon (Americans call it Canadian bacon), Tourtiere – a fantastic french meat pie, Poutine, Smarties- ours are chocolate rather than sour candies and so on.

One of the latest people to join the I am Canadian Blogroll sent in her proof of her Canadianesse by writing a post about being Canadian. It’s fantastic. I didn’t get too far into her post before I was adding her to the blogroll. Cori’s a great read too so I’m happy to add her to the list.

I just love it when people get creative!

images.jpg Speaking of something truly Canadian, definitely cultural icons, and somewhat creative … Bob and Doug Mackenzie are coming back!

On May 24th, which is our Victoria day long weekend to celebrate the former Queen of England’s birthday, and traditionally known as the “May 24” when Canadians tend to go camping, party and drink cases of beer – all containing 24 bottles or cans of course – a one hour tribute to Bob and Doug Mackenzie will be aired on CBC.

It’s really poor planning on the Canadian Broadcasting Companies part because as I just said this is the weekend that Canadians go to the cottage or go camping and most often do not have access to TV.

So if you do have plans that weekend set your VCR’s, DVR’s or TIVO to tape the show for you. I’m certain it will be a good one.

One final peek at our Canadian icons Bob and Doug MacKenzie

BTW I know that the infamous Ted Murphy is a fan of Bob and Doug – hope he’s taking note of this too.

My husband got all excited about this too and is working on a post that will hopefully contain a video. I’ll link to his post when he’s done. He needs a beer for inspiration, he’ll be done soon. It’s done – check out his view of Bob and Doug.
