Shopping spree

April 9, 2007 by Tricia

The other day after my doctors appointment my husband and went shopping. Chris always has Mondays off. It’s great for him. We always have a long weekend, plus if either of us needs to make appointments his having Mondays off is quite convenient.

I went on a shopping spree!

I’ve needed to get some new clothes for a while. Since I’m mostly at home I didn’t need to get anything fancy. I just wanted a couple pairs of pants and I wanted to get a new pair of pajamas … well ok a T-shirt nightie. Comfy stuff.

So we went to the shopping mecca called Walmart. They’ve built a new super store close to where the previous Walmart had been. It’s huge!

I ended up getting two pairs of pants, a few t-shirts, three nighties and uh a bra. I needed that stuff!

We also picked up some groceries. I’ve never minded picking up dried goods – cereals and packaged foods like that, or canned and bottled items, but this store is more like a grocery store now. The old Walmart had a freezer section along with the rows of packaged food items, but it didn’t sell fresh food. This one does.

This last time and the time before I didn’t hesitate to get some fruit, veggies and salad makings. They were in good shape, and the price was right. I have however been hesitant to purchase fresh meat from Walmart. You know there’s some stores that you just don’t buy fresh goods from. For me, one of them is a grocery store called Food Basics here in Canada. They have great prices but their meat sucks. It seems to be off a lower grade than in other grocery stores.

So … does anyone purchase fresh meats at Walmart?

I did notice that they had some name brands – possibly some those of you from the US and other countries might not be familiar with like Maple Leaf which a good brand maker of meat products. The prices were reasonable and the chicken, beef and pork looked fresh and of good quality. I was tempted, but hesitated. I thought it might be best to ask my readers opinion first. I hate to waste money.

Who buys meat at Walmart? Is it good? Have you been happy with the quality?

Call me El Cheapo, but I love Wal-Mart! I get groceries there quite often and I have bought meat, chicken and seafood with no problems at all. I like the steaks I get from there and every once in a while I’ll splurge and get a lobster.

Wal-Mart is my friend for everything — prescriptions, food, household stuff. The only thing I don’t get much of is their clothes because I’m so short and it’s hard to get stuff to fit me. But I do buy my, uh, unmentionables there too. 🙂

I used to buy all my groceries from Walmart but now I live further away and it isn’t as convenient. I never had any problems with any of the meat that I bought there. I used to buy the huge roll of ground beef (which was amazingly inexpensive) and while it was a little fatty it still worked well for me.

I also don’t go much because the only time I like going is first thing in the morning on Saturday or Sunday (like 6am) and I just haven’t felt like getting up early enough to be there by 6am. 🙂
    Take care

I boycott Walmart, but my friends that shop there have never metioned that they buy meat there. Do you have a Costco nearby? They have an excellent meat department. They are very inexpensive.

I love Walmart! I’ve never bought groceries there, though.

We buy all of our meat there and have never been disappointed. Just like anywhere, you can buy different qualities, so pay attention to that. And really, if you DO get something that you think is sub-par quality, I can’t imagine that Walmart wouldn’t make good on it. I love this store and they stand behind what they sell.

Never, ever…buy fresh meat there…..it looks so good…but it’s terrible. Especially the ground beef. Terrible, terrible, TERRIBLE!!!

Wow, I guess it must vary in different places so I guess I’d ask around close-by, but around here and everywhere else I’ve been, Wal Mart is pretty much THE store, groceries and otherwise. I get almost everything from Wal Mart. The only complaint I’ve ever had with anything I’ve gotten from there has been….well nevermind I can’t really think of anything! My problem is getting hooked on a lesser-known product only to have them stop selling it…*shrug*

Walmart seems to be either loved or loathed in the US. They bought the ASDA supermarkets in Britain.

Thanks for all the great feedback everyone. It sounds like most of you who have purchased meat at Walmart have found it to be of fairly good quality and well priced. Good. I’ll proceed with caution and likely try it out by buying some chicken or something. Hopefully I’ll have a good experience too!

You know when the first Walmart’s opened here in Toronto my husband would not go into one. We’d heard all the bad stories about them causing other smaller companies to shut down because they couldn’t compete and that was one of Chris’ main reasons for feeling that Walmart was evil.

Now that we don’t have quite as much money to spend we do go to Walmart more often than we did. They do have great deals on all kinds of things don’t they? We do however, still shop at regular groceries, department, and mom and pop stores as much as we used to in the past. I do think it’s important to support local businesses.

Oh someone asked if we have a Costco (similar to Sam’s Club) in our area and yes we do … not that close but we do. We are members but only seem to get there once or twice a year. I’ve tried there meats and they’re ok – not fantastic, not bad. If there was more than two of us, and if we had a bigger freezer we’d probably shop at Costco more often … but when you have to purchase such large amounts of everything it’s kind of hard if you don’t have much storage space or more people to use the stuff up in the house.
