Start an online store using Ashop

March 8, 2007 by Tricia

I know a number of people who have started full or part time businesses by selling their merchandise online. Some of these people are artists who make their own products and sell them via online stores, others purchase merchandise from wholesalers and sell them from their store – just like any walk in retail store would do.

It’s through my friends that I’ve learned the importance of having a reliable shopping cart system for an online store. A shopping cart has to be secure, it can’t cost too much to use, and if it’s a hosted system the host must offer reliable service. An online store who’s shopping cart is not working can’t do any business can they?

If you’re looking for an ecommerce solution check out Ashop as it’s easy to use, web based, secure, reliable, reasonably priced and has built a reputation over the years as being a great ecommerce solution for many types of online businesses. You can accept credit cards, and customize the design to suit your needs. Visit the Ashop site to try out a demo store and see for yourself how easy it is to use.

Non Profit service to help those in need of drug rehab

March 7, 2007 by Tricia

As a nurse working in a busy emergency room I can’t begin to count the number of times that I helped treat people with addictions who had either come into the ER on their own, or who were brought in by the police, often for some type of “Public nuisance” complaint.

Believe it or not the majority of the people suffering from one form of addiction or another that I’ve cared for in the ER wanted help. They knew they had a problem. They knew the drugs or alcohol abuse was messing up their life, or worse had already done a lot of damage to their life and relationships. They wanted help but they didn’t know where to turn in order to get the kind of help that they needed.

Unfortunately we can’t help them all that much in the ER. Oh sure, we do have a rehab clinic that’s associated with our hospital, but 4 times out of 5 when we’d call them to tell them we wanted to send someone over to them they’d tell us that they were booked up.

So when I came across 1800nodrugs.com’s site earlier today I was very pleased. You see, I can use that number myself, give it to a doctor treating a patient with addiction problems, or even give it directly to the patient so that they can get some help and advice about drug rehab. 1800nodrugs.com is an addiction treatment referral service.

It’s a non-profit organization that accepts toll free phone calls from people who are seeking drug rehab. People who want help but have no idea where they can go to get the help that they need. Much like many of the patients that I’ve seen come through our ER.

Check out the site for yourself. If you know someone that suffers from drug or alcohol addiction please give them the site address and phone number. You might help them get on the right track if you do.

I just thought of one other way that you might help others with drug addictions through this service – give the site address and number to your family doctor too. Your doctor might not be aware that such a service exists and he or she can give information about this non-profit service to patients that might be looking for drug rehab services.

Birds of a feather?

March 7, 2007 by Tricia

Wordless Wednesday

Birds of a feather?

At first this looks like a cute photo of a bunch of small birds gathered on a tree branch doesn’t it? Well it is a cute photo.

Take a closer look though … two of the birds are an odd color. They are very blue. I have no idea if the birds are all the same species and if the colorful ones are just males of the species, or if there are two different types of birds on the branch.

What do you think? Does anyone know what type of birds these might be?

Online Back up – safe and secure – only $2 per GB

March 6, 2007 by Tricia

Remember back at the beginning of February when my web hosting company decided to cancel my account early one Sunday morning without giving me any notice at all? It was a horrendous experience.

I didn’t have access to my websites directories anymore. The company was slow to get back to me as to why they’d canceled my account and I had no recent back ups of my sites data. Honestly, I felt like I was going to have a heart attack. It was a terrible situation to be in.

I would have had to start all but one of my sites pretty much over again if the owner of the web hosting company hadn’t finally agreed to send me a back up of my sites data.

Since that time I back up my sites regularly. Almost daily. Trouble is, the back ups are starting to take up a lot of space on my computer. Remember I have 13 sites. I do get rid of the older data, but I like to have about 1 weeks backup’s on hand.

Now I’ve found a site called Data Deposit Box where I store my data online for a very low price. That’s right they provide Online Backup for only $2/GB. I’m pretty sure that I could store just about all of my back up data for that low fee. I could also store quite a bit of the data, documents and photos that I keep on my computer in a backup format at Data Deposit box too.

Data Deposit Box provides it’s online Backup service to individuals like myself, Partners and small and large businesses.

It only makes sense to use a back up service such as this. Especially when the price is so reasonable.

Many individuals and business store important, sensitive and valuable back up data on backup tapes. Just for security reasons alone it makes sense to stop storing backups on tapes that could be damaged, lost or stolen and store your data with a secure online back up service like Data Deposit Box instead.

I mean how often have we heard new stories about big companies losing their back up tapes and data recently? I mean, just a couple of weeks ago the bank that I do the majority of my business with, The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) made a public statement stating that a computer backup tape that contained information on 470,000 mutual fund clients had gone missing. Was it stolen? Who knows!

Johns Hopkins University and Hospital recently admitted to losing back up tapes that contained payroll data on 52,000 workers, plus the medical information of 83,000 patients. That’s a terrible lose of data, and who knows who’s hands it might be in now. Why on earth didn’t they use a secure data storage service? Not only could that information be in the wrong hands, but it could be lost for good. If you’re one of the patients who’s been treated at John Hopkins regularly and your data was lost it’s going to be a huge headache the next time you go in for a visit or treatment as the hospital will have to work with you to fill in all the data that’s been lost.

Several other companies over the last year have reported lost, damaged or even stolen data back up tapes. There is a better way. Take a look at this article about Data Deposit Box’s online data storage service. The article explains their service and it’s many features. I believe the key features are the ability to have continuous backup, flexible yet secure access to the online data, and the ability to share large files online.

Please do take the time to visit Data Deposit Box and learn how they can help you store your data. Whether your an individual like me with data you want to protect or a business – think about storing your data online safely and securely in order to protect your data. I’m sure no one wants to go through the experience that I went through, or that any of the businesses that I’ve mentioned have gone through.

Policing the Internet

March 5, 2007 by Tricia

I’ve gotta rant –

I got a comment two weeks ago on a Photo Hunter post. Actually I got the same comment on two of my sites.

A likely well meaning person got it in their head to inform me of the rules of the Photo Hunter meme. Specifically, they copied and pasted the part of the rules which says that the photo I use must be my own.

Yes, I do know that that is one of the rules of the game. You don’t have to tell me. Most of the time I do in fact post my own photos. I am a photographer after all, why wouldn’t I want to show my own work whenever I can?

Unfortunately, I don’t always have photos that fit the theme. I don’t have furry pets or kids. It’s winter here. Plus I’m sick and stuck inside the house. I don’t get out much at all. Not even to shop these days. So yes, occasionally I’ll find a photo that fits the theme on a free site that I can download the photo from without causing any harm. For the last photo hunt I used a photo that a photographer friend had given me permission to use as I pleased.

It seems that I can’t win for losing these days.

I even get anonymous comments from people occasionally telling me that Wordless Wednesdays are supposed to be wordless. No way? I had no clue what Wordless Wednesday meant.

Yes I really do know, but I have a reason for writing in my Wordless Wednesday posts and I’ll probably keep doing it too.

I almost always play by the rules in everything that I do. Except it doesn’t pay since I still get told what to do, or that I did something wrong – even when I didn’t.

For example, two weeks ago I wrote a post for an advertiser. Four days later the same writing opportunity came up and my husband, who has a separate account of his own with a “blogging” company also took the writing opportunity on his site – which happens to be on a sub directory of this domain. The advertiser in question didn’t exclude any domains when he or she made their advertising opportunity. Turns out, after the fact, that the advertiser didn’t want two links from the same domain. Unfortunately the rules of the writing opportunity didn’t say that, and with my husband having his own account I can’t hang over his shoulder and tell him what he should or shouldn’t write. Somehow I was the one penalized for the action though. I followed the rules to a T and so did my husband, but guess what? It was still somehow our fault. I’m still waiting to find out how that whole saga will turn out. I was told to resubmit my rejected post a week and a half ago. I have a nagging feeling that they are going to let me leave it up for 30 days and then reject it again. Oh I’ll be so mad if they do that.

Next on the list … I’ve found three sites copying my whole posts onto their site. Giving no credit back to my site and claiming as their own. I complained to the authors and wrote about it on the blog that had the articles stolen yet I was told by at least one commenter that I didn’t have a right to be upset. Huh?

So to heck with it.

I do things right and things go wrong and I get told that I’m wrong. I do one little thing that isn’t right and never mind that a lot of people post photos that aren’t their own, or write in posts that are supposed to be wordless – I get the rules copied into my comment area. It wouldn’t bother me so much if it was the meme owner who wrote to me, but it was someone that took it upon themselves to police the internet.

After the way last month went I just feel like saying “Forget it”.

You know, I see people doing this all the time. Policing the internet I mean.

Telling people that they spelled words wrong in their posts on their blogs, mailing lists or in forums and just butting in where they have no business in the first place.

Those people just need to mind their own business. Keep it to yourself because I don’t want to hear it. If you see something on the internet that bugs you enough that you feel you must comment why not just blog about it on your own site?

Keep it off mine though.
