Memories of my younger days

Meet “Little Me”

It looks like I was probably 2 years old or so in that photo. Squinting into the sun. I think I still probably make that face when the sun is in my eyes.

I don’t have any memory of that day, but I know from the background that it was taken up at our cottage, or rather, our old family farm in front of my grandmothers house. We’d taken over the old three story farm house far across the field from my grandmothers more modern house and we used the old family home as at cottage to visit on the weekends.

I loved our old farm house. I do remember that well. Unfortunately it burned down – with one of my brothers inside of it – when I was just five years old. Don’t worry, my uncle rescued my brother, but we didn’t know that for a while as we watched the farm house burn. We built a one story, 3 bedroom, open style cottage in it’s place and it became our weekend home away from home. It too ended up burning down when I was 19 or 20 years old. We never rebuilt after that happened.

My family 164

This is a photo of my brothers wedding party. Terry is the one on the far left, he’s the groom of course. He’s also the middle child. The second oldest is my brother Laurie, and he’s the man to the left of my brother Terry, and just to the right of him is my oldest brother Bob. The last man is my ex-sister in laws boyfriend. Beside my ex-sister-in-law, is her sister, then to the right of her, the woman with the dark hair is my sister Ellen. She’s the fourth child in the family. Then finally, there’s a younger version of me.

I think I was about 10 in that photo. Which means that my sister was 20, and my oldest brother was going on thirty! Big age gap!

By the time I was 12 all of my brothers were married and I was an aunt to my first niece! That felt strange too. My sister got married when I was 17 or 18. I was a flower girl, brides maid or maid of honor at each of my siblings weddings. I wasn’t a bride until many years later – like 10 years from the last family wedding!

Dealking gives you cash back when you shop

January 5, 2007 by Tricia

Do you like saving money and getting great deals? I know that I do. If you’re like me and enjoy finding a bargain then you should visit dealking.com. The site lists deals, discounts and even cash back offers on products purchased for 100’s on well known, name brand online stores.

To start saving money and get cash back on your purchases all you need to do is sign up for a free Deal King membership and then start shopping. Find a store or product you like and go to the site to purchase the product through the Dealking.com links to get your discounts or cash back deals. For example – I need some new clothes so I visited their Gap directory. In the Gap directory I found an offer that would get me 2% cashback on my Gap purchases. Dealking has other offers that are even better than that.

Silver and other precious metals as an investment

January 5, 2007 by Tricia

It seems these days that I’m all about money in one way or another – finding good deals so we can save our limited income, trying to put some funds aside in a high interest account in the bank, thinking about stocks, bonds and mutual funds, and now I’m looking at Monex Deposit Company. You see they sell silver coin and other precious metals as a form of investment.

Apparently world demand for silver now exceeds annual production of the precious metal.

It’s a worthy product to invest in now before stores of the stock piles of this metal go down further. MDC allows you to purchase silver and have it delivered for safe keeping to an independent bank or depository. The silver comes in coin, with currency value, or ingot form.

As I said I haven’t decided yet how I might invest my money, but I know that investing in a diverse amount of products or companies is usually a good idea, so perhaps one day I’ll have myself a little stockpile of silver or other precious metals.

No more house guests

January 5, 2007 by Tricia

My home was invaded on Monday, New Years day, by my husband’s brother and his son. They’d come up from Chicago for a family visit last Friday and they decided to stay at our house for a few days while they were in Canada.

They weren’t supposed to come over until Tuesday, and I was not feeling well on Monday when they arrived. No I didn’t party on New Years – I stayed home by myself because I wasn’t well. Anyway, we had a nice time Monday evening and made plans to go to a hockey game on Tuesday evening.

Tuesday night I was so ill that I was actually falling asleep during a hockey game. I don’t think I’ve ever fallen asleep in public let alone at a hockey game! This one had brawls every few minutes too. I have no idea why I was so sleepy but I was, and I found myself nodding off several times. Very strange.

The evening was ruined at the end. My husbands brothers 18 year old daughter was flying in from Chicago that evening. Chris went to pick her up after the hockey game. They called her on the cell phone just as she arrived to find out what terminal she was in. Toronto has three terminals so it’s important to know which one your landing in or picking someone up from. Anyway, she had no clue, so Chris asked her to ask someone and call him back when she was getting her bags.

Well, she never did ask anyone. I had to figure out which terminal she was at by looking up the airlines on the net here at home. So it was a mess of phone calls back and forth and this girl doesn’t like to wait. of course when I looked at her paperwork when she got her it did say what terminal she was landing in. She was just being too dumb or stubborn to look at it.

Now if only that was all that went wrong. It wasn’t. The airline lost her bags! So when Chris and his nephew arrived back at the house – about two hours later than they should have she was in a horrible mood. So bad in fact that she didn’t even say hello to me. That really ticked me off because I was the only person she hadn’t seen in months and she couldn’t even say hello?

It’s not that she doesn’t like me or anything. She was just in a mood. She’s a real princess that one. If she doesn’t get what she wants she whines!

The rest of their visit was ok. We went out to dinner on Wednesday night, and the guys watched some of the World Junior hockey games that we’d recorded on the DVR earlier that day. Speaking of which the Gold match is on today!

Yesterday I had yet another doctors appointment in the morning. Chris went with me and when we came back the gang was just getting up. We’d found out the night before that the airport had found my nieces bags, and they were delivered to the house around noon on Thursday. My niece was finally happy. They left a while after the bags arrived and I went back to bed for a couple of hours because I’d only slept two hours the night before.

I’m just so dragged out. I’m in pain, not feeling well, and I’m totally exhausted but I can’t sleep because of the pain. This was not the time for me to have three extra people in my house.

I have a feeling we’ll be going out of town tonight. Chris’ brother is going to drive back to Chicago on Saturday, so he’s spending Friday night at their parents house, and I think we might go there for a final visit before they go. All I can say though is that if I’m still feeling like crap I’m not going.

Excellent web hosting at a great price

January 4, 2007 by Tricia

I’ve been looking, not too hard yet, for a new web host for my three domains and all my sites. I like the features that I have with my current host but my sites go down in the middle of the night quite often and I want to have as little down time as possible for my sites. Plus, it always seems to go down just when I’m working on a post and I’ll have to wait half an hour before I can publish a new post or I sometimes lose my post altogether. I hate that.

One of the companies that I think might be good for me to move over to is Lunarpages Web Hosting. Their basic web hosting plan starts at $6.95 per month and offers 800 GB of transfer, and 35,000 MB of storage. That’s more storage and transfer than I have now. I currently use about 35 to 40 gb of transfer with my sites. Wow, you know what- This is a good deal. My current plan offers me 200 GB storage space, and 4 gb storage for $12.95 a month. I’d rather pay $6.95 a month and get several times more space and transfer bytes and a free domain too! Yes, you get a free domain when you purchase a hosting package.

So here’s what you get when you sign up for their basic web hosting plan, on top of what I’ve mentioned above of course- you’ll get $700 worth of Coffeecup webmaster and design software, a free domain name and add on domain, an online control panel, MYsql data bases, Online stats, Ruby on Rails support (I think that’s unheard of for a basic hosting package), Fantastico, and media support plus a lot more features. Geez I’m almost ready to hit that sign up button. I really am.

Lunarpages.com has been in business for 6 years. That’s long enough to have established a good name for themselves. They provide a number of services which include basic, windows, Linux, VPS & dedicated hosting services.

One thing that I always look for when I look at hosting companies is their support services. I like that Lunarpages offers 24/7 customer support through telephone services, and I presume online through a contact form. They also have forums and a blog where a member or potential customer could get more information or support from the team and other members. There are a number of online tutorial articles which a member can access as well.

Another thing that I want to know about is how often their servers go down. Lunarpages says that they have a 99.9% uptime and reliable servers that are housed in two data centers.

Here’s something else that makes Lunarpages stand out as a very special kind of web hosting company. One that I think I very well might do some business with. They give webmasters that are stuck in a hosting contract a break. They will add paid time- up to 6 months- to a new customers account if they purchase a 12 or 24 month package.

Here’s yet another bonus that might make you switch or even ditch your free host and get your own domain. You can get a $25 discount off any 12/24 month Basic, Business, Windows or VPS plan. Coupon Code: lunar25off That’s amazing.

Additional domain names or domain transfers are 7.95 each.
