Ice Cream Days and Multimedia Freebies

icecreamdays

I think that’s a nice sentement, don’t you?

This photo was taken on Wednesday afternoon when my husband and I were finally about to go home after picking up the free item that I mentioned in my previous posts. We needed and wanted Ice cream. Yummmm this place is a small shop that makes it’s own ice cream. Order a cone with one scoop and they give you a gigantic scoop … really it could fill a whole bowl. Good prices too.

That’s the second time I’ve had ice cream this week. I think I’ve used up my summer quota already.

__________________________________________

Now, on to the good stuff. Some of you have been waiting for me to tell you what techy item I got for free this week. Well, that picture was taken with it, and so was the latest photo on Breath of Life.

The Buzz creating company that contacted me gave me a Nokia 6682 cell phone on Wednesday.

It’s a multimedia smartphone. It came with several extras too- a 512 mb memory card (it had 64 mg already), a bluetooth wireless headset, and an extra set of headphones for listening to MP3’s. All in all, the phone and the extras are probably worth over $500. I can get organized on it, or view documents with the mini microsoft office software that’s on it (ie view excel, word and powerpoint docs), list things on the calendar or record my thoughts, control the phone with voice commands, play games, connect to the web – it’s has the Opera browser on it, make conference calls, and that’s only the start. I’m still exploring and discovering all the things the phone can do.

Best of all though, is that it has a 1.3 megapixel camera built in. Ok so 1.3 megapixels doesn’t compare to the latest digital cameras but I’ve found that it takes pretty good photos. I can also record up to an hour of video if I want to.

I actually already made some videos. Chris and I accidentally ended up on the Molson Indy race track as it was being created, when we were on our way to pick up the phone. That was kind of neat, so on our way back home with the new cell phone we decided to get on the track and make a video. It’s not bad and it was kind of fun to make. Really, how often does one get to drive on a formula one race track anyway?

Then we went to the beach and took about 60 pictures along the way. I guess it must have taken us about 3 hours to get home that day, but we had a lot of fun. You should see all the volley ball nets on the beach. There must be 200 of them all strung out in long rows of 10 or so. Here, I’ll show you:

couplehundredvolleyballnets

The only problem is that the video is in 3GP and to upload it to a place like youtube I need to create a file that is under 100k in AVI or MPEG format. If anyone could give me some suggestions for some conversion software I’d appreciate it.

Chris and I are going to a Party tonight. It’s out of town, in the fun city of Brantford. I’m being slightly sarcastic here. Just a little, uhm yeah. Anyway, the party should be a good one, and it will give me another opportunity to try out the phone and see how it works for party photos. Hmmm I wonder if I can take it in the hot tub with me? The house we are going to has a huge hot tub. It’s going to be fun. Oh, it’s also Chris’ birthday and the party is partly going to be a surprise for Chris and a surprise for his sister and brother-in-law who are celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary. I expect to have a hang over on Sunday.

We’re taking our Home Stay student with us too. She doesn’t want to stay alone in the house. I swear we take her everywhere with us, even the grocery store! Ahh. Next weekend we are going out of town again and she’s coming with us then too. It’s like we have a kid – one that wants to be with her parents. No really, I think it’s because we are always doing interesting things and we are kind of fun to be with- especially my husband Chris. He’s always fun.

I’ll leave you with the CN Tower rising above some Condos near Harbor Front:

Tech Meltdown

July 6, 2006 by Tricia

Thirteen Things about My Techy week!

1…. I can’t believe the week I’ve had as far as high tech electronics and website maintenance goes! It’s been both good and bad.

2….Starting with the bad- I had my first bad comment on my site. Oh well, with all the great comments I’ve had so far one bad one doesn’t make one iota of difference to me.

3…. Sometime between the bad comment and the next not so good thing that happened to me techy wise my internet connection went down for several hours leaving me unable to post or answer mail for a good while.

4…. Then, on Monday afternoon, as I was checking stats for all of my websites on my hosting companies site I noticed that I was getting hits on a directory that I hadn’t added to one of my sites.

5…. It was a Ringtone directory with about 50 html pages listed in it. The pages were getting a lot of hits so I was losing bandwidth due to some hacker!

6…. My host wasn’t all that helpful in helping me figure out how I’d been hacked. The main thing that they told me to do was change my account password. Helpful but it doesn’t explain how someone must have gotten my password in the first place to be able to hack my site.

7…. At least it was only a directory that they added. They could have destroyed my whole site! Anyway, the point of this story is that if you host a domain somewhere check your stats regularly so you can notice any problems or hacks as they occur and change your password regularly too.

8…. The last bad thing happened at about 5 a.m. Wednesday morning. My husband has a very bad cold and he was having a lot of trouble getting to sleep last night so he got up and went to the living room to watch T.V.

9…. He turned it on and nothing much happened except all three lights in the front started flashing. The T.V. is one of those rear projection DLP T.V.’s and it needs a powerful light behind the screen to show the picture.

10…. We’re hoping that the problem is that the light burnt out after two years and three months of use. Unfortunately for us, the replacement bulb costs close to $300 and it might take up to two weeks to get a replacement.

11…. Geez, we could buy a new (smaller) T.V. for the cost of that darn lightbulb! I hope that after we wait for a replacement bulb that it doesn’t turn out that it’s a different problem that needs to be fixed after all. We haven’t had much luck with DLP T.V.s, in 2004 we bought our first one, an RCA scenium and it died after two days, then we got another one from the company and it died after about 6 days … finally they gave us a Samsung and that’s been working fine until now.

12…. This last bit is my good techy news. On Tuesday afternoon I heard back from a company that had contacted me the week before regarding Buzz marketing. I had qualified to receive a newish techy product that they were going to give away to 45 Toronto Area bloggers in the hopes that the bloggers would use the product and talk about it on their websites and with friends in order to create a buzz or marketplace interest about the product.

13…. I picked up my new ? yesterday afternoon and gave it a two hour workout while returning home with it. Yes it’s something that works right out of the box. I’m quite pleased with it so far. It came with a ton of accessories and many extra’s that don’t normally come with the product when someone purchases it. I figure with the three main extras that came with my new ? it’s worth about $500. Yeah- and it’s FREE! No obligations at all, I don’t even have to write about it if I don’t want to and it’s mine to keep. Of course its kind of neat and I can definitely use it with my blogs so I’m pretty sure you will get a peek at my new ? starting later this afternoon. Sorry for the tease but I want to show you what this product can do when I really am ready and I’m pretty sure it will be this afternoon.

I’ve been Hacked!

July 4, 2006 by Tricia

Unbelievable! This is a week of firsts.

Sunday evening I received that lovely comment telling me how boring one of my posts was, and then on Monday, as I was going over my various sites stats I discovered that my main web site had been hacked.

This just goes to show the importance of checking your stats daily. Which I usually do, but I slacked off in the last two weeks and hadn’t checked them at all in that time.

Someone snuck into my account and added a new directory for Ringtones and added about 50 html pages into that directory. The pages automatically redirected to the hackers site where the pages were set up with various affiliate links for various products.

I informed my Host immediately when I discovered the problem. I even left the directory on my site so that my host company could have a look and trace the hacker. They’re working on it now, and I’ve since removed the directory. At this point though, my Host says that the hacker must have figured out my log in info and got in that way. I told them that I don’t even have my log in written down anywhere, but whatever, my log in info is all changed now.

I still think I’m fairly lucky. The hack could have been worse, they could have messed up my blogs or my CMS managed web site – Reptile Logic, but instead they only added a new directory into my main web site Tricia’s Chinese water dragon, reptile and amphibian care page, which has been in existence for 10.5 years. That’s the first time any of my sites have been broken into in all that time.

I do have some other news – news that I can’t tell you too much about until Thursday. Ha tease! You know those companies that exist specifically to create a Buzz about new products? Well I’ve been asked to create some buzz for one of them. I’m being given a product free of charge to use as I chose. I can write about it and even use it on my site if I want to – or not. No obligation apparently. We’ll see how that part works out. I think I will be writing about the product though as it should go well with this site and perhaps one or two of my other blogs.

Can you guess what it is that I might create some buzz about?

It’s all about ME

July 3, 2006 by Tricia

Now you've done it Well now someones gone and done it. They’ve blown my record. Tsk tsk.

I’ve been writing in this blog for just over 5 months. Somehow it seems longer, but it really has been only a short time since this site came into existence.

I’ve had 1175 comments. I’m amazed at how many people have taken the time to stop and comment on the latest post, or on the site in general. Thank you for taking the time to read, and to let me know that you’ve been reading by leaving a comment.

The 1176th comment is however quite different from all the rest. It’s the first “bad” comment:

“*snore*
do you really think anyone cares to read a blow by blow of your medical experiences? get a life.” signed Bored.

I’m laughing! If you’re so bored “Bored”, why did you even bother to write a comment? You obviously took the time to scroll down the page in order to read Steamrolled, or you were visiting from the Carnival of Blogging Chicks. Either way, I’m not really bothered by your comment, just mystified that you took the time to write something if the post was so dull. When I’m bored I just move on and perhaps visit again later to see if the next post is more interesting.

Just to clarify though, I do have a life. It’s just kind of on hold, or at the very least moving in slow motion right now because I do have medical problems. Unfortunately for “Bored” a person with medical problems will occasionally write about their medical experiences, as dull as that may be.

In case my cartoon header didn’t spell it out for you “Bored”, I’m a nurse. See the nursing cap and the stethoscope up there on the table? When I do get back to work in the Emergency department I’m pretty sure that there will be times that I will be writing (as confidentially as possible) about other peoples medical experiences. I’m sure there will be days that I come home and write about the patient whom I comforted as they died; a child who stuck a toy figurine up his or her nose; a patients angry or crazy relatives; or the latest shooting victim. The tone and content of this site might change when I have “more of a life”. For some it will be more interesting, for others perhaps not their cup of tea. Only time will tell.

If I was feeling healthy, and was back to work, there’s a good chance that this blog would never have started. But I’m off work at the moment, and I’ve got some spare time on my hands, and well, since I’m ill I need to keep my mind occupied so I don’t dwell on my situation and how bad I’m feeling. So I write.

I actually started this site with the full intention of writing about Crohns disease and how it was affecting my life, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. It’s too depressing to talk about and I’m trying to stay as up beat as I can so I write about anything and everything that pops into my head or that I encounter in my day to day goings on.

I’ve found that over the years with this illness that if I stay busy and keep my mind occupied the pain doesn’t get to me as much as it does when I’m just sitting around not doing much of anything. Writing on this site, my 4 other blogs, and my two huge websites, as well as helping all of the people that write to me about their sick pets keeps me pretty busy. I think it would keep anyone busy! It’s also therapeutic.

I don’t write on this site to entertain people. I write what I want to write, and I do it for me. I’m not going to lie, I know people are reading my site so I try to write in an interesting way, and try to amuse at times, but the main person I’m writing for is ME. I love the comments and the feedback that I get from the people who read this site, and I’d hate it if I suddenly wasn’t getting any comments, but I’d still write.

As for the post that “Bored” took the time to comment on, well that was all about me, but in a way it wasn’t written just for me. I wrote that out so that others would know that sometimes common tests that are performed thousands of times can go bad and that complications can develop afterwards. The medical tests are important and they could save your life, but things don’t always go smoothly. I was in a potentially life threatening situation – it could have been a bowel perforation that I suffered from after the tests, instead it was a bowel obstruction. Both are very serious. Luckily I’m getting better and finally starting to feel more like myself.

One other thing before I step off my tiny soapbox (and probably fall!). I talked about my cartoon header earlier. I’ve been reading on some sites that people “hate” blogs with cartoon headers and some even go as far to say they won’t read them, or vote for them in battles etc. I’m sure those people haven’t read this far so perhaps my point is falling on deaf ears, but I just want to say that it’s very unlikely that my header will ever contain a picture of me.

I use a ‘toon to represent me in order to protect my privacy and that of my husbands. I work in a huge hospital yet I know almost everyone that works there. Regular patients also know me and would recognize me if they saw my picture on a blog. While I’m not totally hiding my identity I really don’t want to make it easy for someone to connect this site with me.

My ‘toon reflects my life – nursing, plants/gardening, music (that’s my husband and my stalker neighbor in the photo), and my work in herpetoculture (see the iguana on the couch?). I don’t really look like the cartoon me – but I do have auburn hair – cut short and layered, I’m tall, have long legs, hazel eyes – on which I wear contacts or sometimes glasses, I’m on the slim side right now due to my illness, and I’m very lucky that I take after my parents and my siblings and look younger than my age. My nose is a little bigger than hers though. I likely wouldn’t dress quite as she is dressed, but the way she’s standing kind of reflects my klutzy nature. LOL

So I’m sorry if you don’t like cartoon headers, but as you can see I did that for several reasons and I tried to make my ‘toon reflect my life and looks as much as I could. All she needs is either a garden trowel or a syringe in her hand and she’d be just about perfect.

Ha ha, all this for one bad comment that really didn’t bother me. Really. I just thought that given this comment perhaps my readers should know a little bit more about me and this blog.

I finally got ’em:

No wonder that monkey on my back was so heavy! There were two of them.
