Safe with Momma

This weeks theme is SAFE

There’s nothing safer for a baby than being with it’s mother.

I believe I can safely say that babies from all species raised by their parents feel this way. I love this photo of the baby elephant and it’s mother. It looks like it was taken at sunset.

Don’t you think this photo should be a poster?

Don’t forget to visit Odd Planet – there’s a great photo for the theme there this week!

Red Sox Spring Training Camp?

October 28, 2006 by Tricia

Since I seem to be on a family kick today, I might as well tell you what just occurred to me. I think I might know another reason why I’ve been thinking more of my family this week and reminiscing about them. The World series has been on!

My father was never a big baseball fan, but my mother – she was a huge baseball fan. My brother that’s coming over sometime this weekend is also a very big baseball fan too. So much so that he’s attended Spring training camp games for a few of his favorite teams.

When my mother passed away a few years ago we – the 5 children – decided that each year we would have a family get together. Whether that be in one of the cities we live in, or as a cruise or tropical Island vacation we get together every year. This past year we all got together in the city of our births, Ottawa, to attend my aunts’ 80th birthday party.

We are still planning what we are going to do in 2007 but the topic of a baseball themed get together has come up. My brother was thinking that it might be interesting to go and see some Boston Red Socks spring training games in Florida. The Red Sox do their spring training in lovely Fort Myers in an open style stadium. I think I’d enjoy going to Florida for a vacation, family get together and perhaps to see a few Red Sox games too.

When I see my brother I think I’ll ask him if he wants to do a baseball get together next year, and if he does we’d better start looking into getting some Boston Red Sox Spring Training tickets. I’d love it if we could get some box seats, because I think that would be nice for us if we are going as a large group. There would be at least nine of us, more if some of the nephews and nieces come along too.

I’m liking the idea more and more. I think we should go for it. What do you think- should we?

More comedy shows please

October 28, 2006 by Tricia

I was just flipping channels on the TV and I came across Married with Children. I haven’t seen that show in ages. Peggy and Al always cracked me up. LOL

This episode happened to be a particularly good one. I came across the show after the show had already started so I’m guessing that Peg must have entered a decorating contest. She re-did the main bathroom all in pink. If you ever watched this show in the past you might remember that Al liked his bathroom time. Well, he simply couldn’t use the washroom when it was all pink so he set out to get the bathroom back. On the day that she was showing the washroom to the contest judges Al loaded himself up with a combination of Tabasco sauce, tacos, refried beans- the works, and while the judges were viewing the bathroom Als meal kicked in. We don’t know exactly what happened up there, but everyone ran out of the house. I’m pretty sure that I can imagine what happened. Ewwww.

Al got his bathroom back after that. LOL

This wasn’t the best comedy show but it was funny. I found that last year there were very few good comedy shows on TV. The only really memorable one that stands out is “My Name is Earl”. This year a number of comedy shows have begun and I hope that a few of them make it through their first season. I think we’ve been over run with reality shows, murder-mystery, medical and detective type shows over the last few years. We need to get some good comedy back in the mix. Our lives are stressful, and nothing relieves stress better than a good laugh. Ok there’s a few other things, but laughter works well for most.

What comedy shows do you like? Are you enjoying any of the new comedy series that have started this year?

Missing my family

October 27, 2006 by Tricia

I’ve been thinking about my family a lot lately. I’m not sure why, perhaps it’s just the time of the year. My sister, and one of my brothers live in the Toronto area but I hardly ever see them. That will change tomorrow or Sunday though, because my brother is going to come over and bring my scanner back. Two bonus’ there – I get to see my bro and I get my scanner that I’ve barely been able to use since I purchased it back. Yeah!

I have two other brothers. My oldest brother, who was almost 20 when I was born is turning 60!!! in a couple of weeks. I can’t believe that I have a brother that age. It’s always seemed more like he should be my parent given his age rather than my brother. He’s worried that he’s turning into an old man but I keep telling him that you’re only as old as you feel.

My final brother, currently lives in Vancouver. I say currently but I think that’s a permanent situation. He loves it there. He’s traveled all over the world for his work as a geologist. He’s lived in the Dominican republic, Africa, and even Spain. I think he enjoyed Spain the most of all the places he’s lived. He’s even talked about buying a property in Spain once or twice in the past. I don’t know if he was serious, but if he did I’d certainly try to visit his “villa” every once in a while.

As I said I’m not sure why I’m thinking of family so much lately, but I am. We’ve already had our thanks Giving here in Canada so the next big time for all of us to try to get together will be Christmas. Unless of course my brother from Vancouver happens to come to town for business- then we all try to get together for dinner.

I guess I’m just missing my family. Do you get that way some times?

Sticky Buttons

October 27, 2006 by Tricia

No that was sticky buttons, not sticky buns. Geesh! You people amaze me with your dirty minds!

We’ve been struggling with our cordless phone for the last few months. No scratch that – it’s had a few problems for about a year now.

It started with us no longer being able to turn the ringer off – that was about a year ago. I don’t know about you, but when you work shift work there are times that you just don’t want the phone to ring, because, of course, if it does it’s usually just after you’ve managed to fall asleep. Ok, well, then, if we don’t want this phone to ring I guess we’ll just unplug it.

Then some of the buttons started to stick every now and then. Often the numbers 6 and 9. It wasn’t too bad at first but over the last couple of months it’s gotten worse and worse. On Tuesday it was so bad that I had to use my cellphone to check our home phone messages because I’d already tried to put in our password 7 times on our cordless phone without it working. The buttons either weren’t working or when I finally succeeded they put in two or three of the number I’d been trying to punch in.

I’ve got a cordless phone that can be used to answer calls but forget dialing most numbers. It doesn’t work half the time. Is there an orphanage or retirement home for phones like this? I think I need to send ours there.

So on Tuesday amongst the many other things that I did on Tuesday we went phone shopping. We ended up getting a Motorola cordless phone. One of those ones that has two extra handsets. We only have TWO phone jack in our house. Yeah, we should have had more put in when we got the house but I guess we figured two would be ok.

Our tiny house now has 5 working phones! A corded phone in our bedroom, a cordless in the living room / dining room – both of those use the phone jacks, a handset in the kitchen, and the other extra handset is in one of our spare rooms upstairs right now but I’d like to move it to the basement ’cause if we do we’ll have all the floors covered. The fifth phone is the cell phone.

No more sticky buttons! The only problem now is that if we don’t want the ringer to wake us up we have even more phones to silence. I’m sure there will be times that we’ll forget one or two of them. *groan*
