White Flowers

I love the simplicity of these white petunias. They seem so clean, so fresh.

My garden is full of color. Pinks, oranges, yellows, reds, purples and a few blues. There are also a lot of green leafy plants around to balance out all that vibrant colour. However, I try to always have a smattering of pure white flowers here and there- Petunias, Datura, White fragrant Four O’ Clocks, Jasmine, Nicotina and White Phlox. I find that the white flowers that I’ve chosen all have a lovely scent, and many of them bloom and have their greatest scent output at night.

I love the white flowers, not only for their scent, but because they light up the garden at night. Often they are the only flowers that can be scene clearly in the semi-darkness as we sit at our patio table and have dinner or relax.

I guess my garden leads a double life, colourful by day, and black and white by night.

Gardeners, Plant and Nature lovers can join in every Sunday, visit As the Garden Grows for more information.

Strange noises at night

September 2, 2006 by Tricia

The other night I was up late. Actually I had fallen asleep on the couch while watching TV with my husband. I awoke at a little past 4 a.m. to find that Chris had abandoned me there. Silly husband, I guess he prefers sleeping in bed.

I was groggy but I knew that I wasn’t ready to go to my real bed yet so I turned the T.V. back on and started to watch what came on. It was the end of Saturday night fever. Man, I haven’t seen that movie in ages. John Travolta’s hair was so stiff looking- probably hard with hairspray – that it looked like a wig. It’s kind of weird to revisit old movies that were part of your younger years. I think I was 10 or 11 when it first came out.

I was so out of it that I kept watching T.V. when Saturday night Fever ended, and ended up watching Smallville. I’ve never seen a whole episode of that show. I guess it was ok, but it’s not the type of show that I would set time aside to watch.

As I watched T.V. I kept hearing weird noises.

Was that a strange banging noise in the driveway? Or was that noise further away?

Klunk. Sounds like something fell down in the basement?

Then, at 5 a.m. I heard it. The creepiest noise of all. I heard what sounded like someone trying to open our front door. The lock gave a distinctive click or clunk.

Lying on the couch, perhaps 12 feet from the front door, I was frozen in fear. After a minute or two, with no further sounds coming from the door lock, I slowly sat up. Should I walk over to the door and take a look? Uh huh. I’d be tempted to open it and what if someone really is there? Ok then, I’ll peek out the front window.

It took me a few minutes to work up the guts to even peek out the window. No one inside the front porch. No one on the sidewalk or street. Whew that’s good. So I walked over to the front door and tested the lock. Secure.

I still felt nervous, and surprise, surprise I wasn’t the least bit sleepy anymore. I went on the computer for a while to check my fan mail e-mail. I eventually went to bed, to the safety and security of being near by husband, but until I nodded off to sleep I was listening for anymore strange noises.

Now, I’m often up very late at night, so I’m used to strange noises the house makes when all is quite. None of the noises I heard between 4 and 5 a.m. sounded familiar to me. It was a cool night so I suppose it’s possible that some of the noises were house cooling noises, but I don’t think so. I’m pretty sure someone was on the front porch and that they tried the door.

Less than two months ago someone came into our enclosed front porch in the middle of the night and tried on all of our running shoes. Odd huh? Well, they didn’t just try them on, they stole a pair of Chris’ and left their old decrepit shoes. Yuck!

I didn’t tell my husband about the strange noises until Friday evening when I told him I’d probably make a post about it. I said I was going to call the post Noises in the Night (but I already did one with that title before), then, as if on cue we both sang “Noises in the Night” to the tune of “Strangers in the Night”. Yeah, we’re weird.

Tell me about your experiences with strange noises in the house. Has anyone tried to break in while you’ve been home? Do night house noises give you the creeps?

Talk to me.

Chicago Road Trip

This Weeks theme is On the Road, which is a perfect theme since I just traveled back and forth from Toronto to Chicago this past weekend, and of course I took some pictures with from the car as we were driving with my Nokia cell phone.

BTW the Nokia is the Multimedia Smart phone that I received for free back at the end of June just for being a Toronto area blogger. It’s a Nokia 6682 and I’m very pleased with most of the photos that it takes. Some of the ones I take while the car is moving don’t turn out the best but it sure is handy!

Ok here goes:

I took this one last Saturday night as we were driving around trying to find the Old School House on Lincoln North, this was before or after my quick change in the car, see the post prior to this one for that story!

Driving in Chicago

This one was taken later that evening after we left the concert. I love the blurred effect. It looks like we were speeding along but we were actually driving at a fairly low speed:

Blurred cars driving down Chicago street

And finally, we saw this sign when we were traveling on Interstate 69, going through Indiana.

dealingcokesign

We found this one kind of funny, because I’m sure that each state and each one of Canada’s provinces could have whole fields full of signs just like that.

Happy Saturday, and have a great long weekend to all that celebrate Labour Day.

Quick Change Artist

September 1, 2006 by Tricia

Do you have any special skills?

A unique, yet possibly quirky talent?

I do! I’m a quick change artist.

I don’t remember exactly when I realized that I had this super power. I think that acquiring super powers is something like getting a headache. It’s not there, it’s not there, BOOM, Oh my gosh do I ever have a headache. Curiously headaches seem to leave the same way too don’t they?

But I digress, back to my talent.

I can completely change my top in public without anyone being able to see any parts that I don’t want seen. Ah, I know, not much fun for those watching ’cause they probably want to see what I’m trying to hide. Tough.

How did I acquire this hidden talent? And why? Well, I think it had something to do with having a cottage as a child. Huh?

Well, we used to go up to our cottage in the late fall, and early spring, sometimes we even went in the winter. Do you know how cool cottage bedrooms that are far from the Oil heater or fireplace get in the cool months? They’re freezing!

As a child I was forced to master changing from whatever I was wearing- usually pants and a top and perhaps a sweater, into my little nightie or flannel pj’s (depending on the time of year) without actually baring any flesh to the frigid air. This was the only way to avoid massive goosebumps, and a case of the shivers that often lasted 2 hours or so.

So it makes sense that I developed this talent out of necessity as a child, right? But I still use my hidden talent on occasion. Sometimes it’s necessary.

Take for example my most recent quick change scenario:

Last Saturday, while we were in Chicago, we were rushing to find the concert hall that we had to be at before 8 p.m. after leaving the downtown area. We were lost. We’d left the downtown area at about 7:15 p.m. after our afternoon of sightseeing and picture taking, knowing that we were cutting it close. By 7:45 p.m. my husbands brother realized we were lost and finally stopped for directions.

I had a feeling this might happen. I had wanted to change from the t-shirt and shorts that I was wearing while touring downtown Chicago into a nice top and some jeans prior to the concert. Just before we left our parking space I’d grabbed my top out of the the trunk and brought it into the front passenger seat with me. I had a feeling that I would need to do a quick change scene.

Knowing we’d only just get there in time to get in and find our seats before the concert started I decided to change my top. I don’t think I’ve ever done this before while moving slowly through crowded city streets, in the front of a car with the window down and the sunroof open. If I made a mistake, not only would my friends and family get an unexpected exposure, but so would complete strangers who were passing by our car as we drove the crowded streets, or when we were stopped at a set of lights.

I was also trying to be a good law abiding citizen and keep my seat belt (lap and shoulder strap) on while completing this quick change. This complicated matters, as did the fact that I was trying to change into a tiny little tank top with multiple holes for my arms or neck to make a mistake poking through.

It was a struggle! It was probably like watching someone struggle out of a straight jacket. At one point my arm was stuck in an awkward position behind my back, in the tank top that was under my t-shirt. I thought I might have to dislocate my shoulder to complete the act, or be forced to bare it all. Finally, my arm slipped into the right place and the tank top was in place. Off came my t-shirt to reveal the cute tank underneath.

I didn’t know what the concert would be like, dressy, casual or what. So I decided to put a nice open shirt over the tank top. Unfortunately I was still wearing the shorts. What I was wearing on top didn’t quite go with the shorts I was wearing, but I’ve yet to master changing into tight jeans while in a car. If they’d been baggy or looser jeans yeah, I probably would have tried. Oh well.

Since I have these unique super powers I decided to take a test to find out which Super Hero I’m most like:

Your results:

You are Spider-Man

Where does Spiderman change anyway? Doesn’t he always just appear in costume whenever he’s needed? Yeah, he must be a quick change artist too. As you can see I’m also 80% like Superman and we all know he changes in telephone booths, right? Kinda like me changing in a car.

So which Super Hero are you, and do you have any hidden talents or skills that match your Super Hero persona?

Come on, talk to me.
