Things that make me Shake in My Boots

May 18, 2006 by Tricia

Thirteen Things Tricia is afraid of

1…. Thunder! Yes, Thunder, not lightning. Well, yes, I do have a healthy fear of lightning, but why on earth do I want to crawl under the covers and hide my head when it thunders? My brother brought back a Rhodesian Ridgeback dog from Africa, back in the 80’s, and that dog was terrified of storms. I used to hide under the table with him!

2…. I was told that when I was a young child a motorcycle drove by and I went into hysterics over the sound. Perhaps that’s why thunder bothers me.
3…. If I could choose how I might die drowning wouldn’t even make the list. I’m not a strong swimmer, and the thought of sinking and not being able to get back up scares the heck out of me. I do however love canoeing and whitewater rafting. Go figure!
4…. I’m afraid of heights. Even standing on a chair bothers me.
5…. Even with my fear of heights, I find myself up on ladders more often than I’d like to be seeing as our house is in a constant state of renovation! Plus, I used to rock climb. I haven’t done that for years but I bet I still could.
6…. I don’t like bridges very much either. That’s probably a combination of the fear of heights and maybe even the fear of drowning thingy.

7…. Does a bridge make a loud noise when it falls down? If it does then bridges might also be on my thunder list. They do rumble when you are standing on one and a big truck drives on it. Are you following my logic or have I totally lost you?
8…. Fear of falling! Just take a look at what happened to me a month and a half ago to know why I fear falling. Oh my chin and jaw!
9…. Hey I’m a klutz. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, so it’s only natural that I fear personal injury due to my klutziness!
10…. Speaking of being a klutz, and injury, I just burned the top of my right index finger and the bottom of my left middle finger while trying to take a hot pizza off the pan. What can I say, the pan slipped, I grabbed it. Stupid!
11…. Fear of fire. When I was 5 our old farmhouse cottage burned down with my brother inside of it. I remember standing outside with my mother and grandmother calling for my brother for what seemed like hours. Fortunately, unbeknown to us, my uncle had run into the house and rescued my brother shortly after the fire started.
12…. I fear for my husband. A year and a half ago he passed out at work, right at the triage station in Emergency. His ecg was altered, so they thought he had a rare sudden death heart arrhythmia called Brugada Syndrome. He was thoroughly tested, something like what they did on HOUSE last night, and they weren’t able to find any problems. But, his ecg is still altered and he still feels faint and shaky at times and when he does I worry over him. He’s too young to die, we have a lot to do yet.
13…. Pain. I fear pain. I have constant chronic pain in my abdomen and it always gets worse at night, worse if I lie down. So I don’t sleep, and when I don’t sleep I have more pain. Ow.

So Am I a wuss or what? I think most of my fears have a rational basis, but maybe I’m wrong. What do you think? Do you have any fears?

** Update** From some of the comments I think some people think I’m sitting here living in fear. Nope! I’m not. I’m not quaking in fear all day everyday. This list is for fun. Everybody has fears, I’m just opening up and listing a few of mine.

Oh and please check out my Wordless Wednesday post below as well! Thanks!

Nahh, you’re not a wuss, I have some of those fears too. I hate thunder, heights, crowds, and lots more.. Hmm nice idea for my next weeks TT!
    Thnx for sharing 🙂

Rollercoasters. Ain’t no way I’m getting on one.

And flying, although not flying specifically. I have a half finished post about it. I better get that done.

  3. Harley says

    May 18, 2006 at 6:16 am

Drowning.. yep. I’m not a strong swimmer either. What really freaks me out though is just water in general. I’m freaked out that I could get eaten by a shark or crocodile or Nessie or a rather large trout. Then there are things like storms and big waves and under currents and I’ll stop now before I pass out. Interesting list thanks for being a wussie too 😀

    Hell I’m afraid of stairs…now that’s lame 😀

Arrgh I knew I was missing something last night and I couldn’t figure it out and it was House :/ Now I’m gonna have to download the episode to watch it. Loads of fears but not really from nature. I love storms. I can’t swim but yet I’m always in the water as well – too many beaches not to be. Heights don’t bug me. Bridges are way cool to go over really fast and bridges to make noises when they come down because our city is blasting 2 of our old ones down now that we have our new one up (so that ones verified) 🙂 I am always freaked out when my little dogs barks/howls out in the backyard because it sounds like someones killing her and when I get out there she’s freaked over a cat. That’s a wussy dog.

I enjoyed reading your list. I’m scared of thunderstorms, too – and I’m probably MUCH older than you. It hasn’t gotten better with age. I hope your husband feels better soon.

You’re not a wuss! I’m afraid of a bunch of stuff too. Lately bridges have been bothering me – heights started bothering me when I was about 18. 🙂

    I hate thunderstorms. HATE them.

  9. carmen says

I don’t think you’re a wuss. We all have fears. (And I’m with you on the thunder thing)

  10. Dariana says

    May 18, 2006 at 8:27 am

We are complete opposites on #1. Thunder doesn’t phase me at all. But lightening scares the bloody heck out of me. Happy TT!

I’m SO with you on the fear of bridges. Ever since I had a nightmare about going off one in my car (with the two kids in back…trapped), I have had bridge fear. A couple of years ago, I was driving over a bridge in New York (over the Hudson) and had a panic attack when I was surrounded by trucks on the bridge!

  12. Margie Mix says

    May 18, 2006 at 9:14 am

Not a wuss at all, I have many of the same fears. Great TT. -Mix

  13. Andrew says

    May 18, 2006 at 9:16 am

My advice to you: Don’t ride a motorcycle across a high bridge that is on fire and over water during thunderstorms, and you should be just fine.

    Your # 4 is my biggest fear…I’m a klutz too, btw. *s*

  16. Jackie says

    May 18, 2006 at 10:33 am

I wonder if your stomach pain is just because of all those fears. I’m afraid of something bad happening to the people I love, and falling. (Not heights, just falling.)

Tricia says: LOL no, I don’t think so. It’s not like I’m sitting her every day thinking about my fears and worrying. No, when I started this list I really had to think about it to come up with things. As you can see from the comments a lot of people have similar fears and many of mine are based on things that have happened in the past that have caused my fear- fire for example. Imagine watching a three story house burn down and thinking your brother is inside and not knowing he was ok for perhaps 3 or 4 hours?

No, my abdominal pain is caused by inflamatory bowel disease … they just haven’t decided if it’s crohns or some unknown disorder. I have fevers, I have life threatening bowel obstructions and many many other unpleasant side effects that go along with this illness that I prefer not to discuss on this site. Fear does not cause this illness, nor does stress BTW.

If your that afraid of water, I def wouldn’t recommend seeing the new movie Poseidon. It’s a fantastic movie, but of course there are a lot of water, holding breathe, and swimming scenes. You might just want to skip it.

I share your fear of heights and drowning. I do hope your husband is better soon. I understand your feelings. I don’t like it when my hubby is sick either.

I am afraid of spiders and stepping onto an escalator that is going down – don’t ask me why – I can go up them ok it’s just stepping out into space. The worst one though is losing someone you love. My first partner died in a car accident so I always worry I will lose people.

What an interesting list. The things I am afraid of aren’t tangible. Example: I am afraid that in the end, I’ll become just like my mother!

  30. Karen says

    May 18, 2006 at 1:41 pm

    water? check
    bridges? check
    thunder I love.
okay, I just noticed that’s a lizard on the back of the sofa in your header- I’ve been wondering for a while who the boys in the band are on the back wall? I assume hubby?

Tricia says- LOL you are the first to comment on the lizard! Maybe the first to notice. That’s my beloved iguana Napoleon who passed away last year at the age of 13. Personality wise he was cross between a good cat and a dog. Really, great pet, but very specialized. The picture in the background is of my husband and my neighbor Sofie (my stalker neighbor). He put a guitar in her hand and I took a picture of both of them looking like they were rocking out. 🙂

The header contains a lot of the things that I love and or talk about on my site. Thanks for noticing. 🙂

I’m afraid of thunder, heights and fire too!

  34. Susan says

    May 18, 2006 at 3:24 pm

I am not afraid of thunder, but I am afraid of loud noises. I can’t handle fireworks, balloons popping, or loud thunder. So, what I fear is the “noise” so to speak. It bothers my ears.

You’re right, we all have them…and it sounds like you have tried to conquer some of yours by doing the thing that makes you uncomfortable.

    My TT is up.

  35. Sherri says
