How do you handle unwanted door to door sales people?

March 22, 2010 by Tricia

I was just saying on my other blog how much I hate door to door sales people … well at least the ones that are trying to sells services or items that are an obvious scam!

We just had a guy at the door trying to sell us a service to repair our brickwork … but believe me he looked like he should be buying a ton of acne medicine rather than wasting his time trying to scam us on work we don’t need done to our home.

Our dog just freaks when someone comes to the door too. She barks her head off. Of course she just wants to make friends with whoevers at the door, but they don’t know that because she looks like she means business.

Maybe next time a solicitor comes to the door we’ll just let the dog bark and bark and scare them away?

How do you handle door to door salesmen? Do you talk to them or just leave them standing outside?

Hey= concerning your post LAST YEAR entitled-
    “Itching and hives oh my!”
How long did they last (the hives)

I ate shrimp and almost immediately broke out also (as a kid i had a shellfish allergy).

    It’s been about 35 hours!

Krista I think my hives lasted four or five days. When they first came out (about half an hour or so after eating the shrimp) there were hives on top of hives on top of hives. It was really bad! I immediately took two benadryl and I had to keep taking Benadryl regularly for three or four days until the hives went down.

I’d been diagnosed with a shrimp/shellfish allergy when I was in my teens but I’d eaten them without any kind of problem for years until that day last February. The attack was so bad that I’m really careful to look at all ingredients in things now and ask at restaurants that serve shrimp if the food I’ve ordered (say chicken) hasn’t been cooked in the same area as the shrimp. I think if i have allergic reaction due to shrimp it will be a really bad one since the one last year was so bad.

yeah my hives today are really really red. Not itchy anymore though 🙂 But just sporadically all over (only the right side of) my body.

Every online forum I go to says “hives should clear within 24 hours” but that ain’t happenin’…

Thanks for getting back to me. I may hit a clinic if they stay around til the end of the work week… but let’s just say I AM NOT looking forward to waiting around at a Toronto Clinic!

Krista did you try taking some Benadryl? It’s really one of the best things you can take when you have hives caused by an allergic reaction.

I’m an ER nurse and while yes, most hives will go down within 24 hours it’s possible for them to last longer. It all depends upon how severe the reaction was and what measures you or a doctor took to reduce the reaction and how fast those measures were taken.

By all means go to a medical clinic if your reaction is continuing. I’d definitely recommend calling your family doctors office (if you have one) and letting them know about your reaction and possibly making an appointment to see your regular doctor. You might ask your regular doctor to send you to an allergist for more testing just to see if you are allergic to anything else. For some reason our allergies change as we get older.

I do believe that if your reaction/hives is starting to die down that the doctor at a medical clinic probably won’t be able to do much for you – other than to recommend taking an anti-histamine such as Benadryl until the hives disappear. However if it suddenly starts to get worse again go to a doctor as soon as you can.

I hope you feel better soon! Avoid shrimp and maybe other shellfish too from now on. I know that might be hard if you enjoy them, but it’s not worth feeling this awful after eating them or risking an even worse reaction.

I’m fortunate to say that I haven’t had someone knock on my door though they do leave stuff on my mailbox and door. Maybe they are knocking and I don’t hear them!

Even though I’m on the ‘do not call’ list, I get phone calls every day it seems. Thank goodness for caller id!

I agree with you that sometime this can annoying.

For most of the time, I do not open the door and the salesman simply leaves after several minutes.

At time when I open the door, I will simply reject them on the spot as I usually don’t buy products that I never heard of.

Wow! We don’t get as many door to door salespeople as we used to get. I think maybe they heard about my reputation. LOL!

Anyway, I think these folks have tons of courage and drive. Most of the time, I use the avoidance approach….I simply do not open the door. If it’s a little kid selling candy, I’m usually a sucker and will buy.

Then there are the pushy kind that I just cut off and go on about my business. Now it you ever decide to write a post about telemarketers let me know…because they are a different breed all together.

I am sure those door to door sales people will be coming around as soon as it warms up. I just really hate the magazine and cleaner ones.
I know that their is some fat cat reaping all the rewards by having these kids do all the work.

I had two young wanted door-to-door sales men visit me at my home in missouri and I felt sorry for them

instead of simply saying no to them or slamming the door in their faces, I took the time to find out from them their stories:

    1. it turns out that they were recruiter by a company as they tried to pay their way through college. It seems that the company would move them hundreds of miles into un-familiar or un-known territory where they would have to sink or swim in a bid to make sales and pay their way through college

Needless to say, I didn’t want to add to their misery and so I did the best that I could do for them!

there is more easy way to handle them.. I just say I don’t need these things.. Sorry, so they dont ask for 2nd time..
its better to refuse before than refusing about wasting their and yours time..

We just don’t open the door and pretend there’s no one home. But since we have 3 dogs outside, salesmen really don’t think of coming near our house.
