This past Wednesday, there was a storm moving through at night. I had gone to bed just after I put my son to bed. And can you believe it I was asleep before 9:00 and slept through the storm and power outage.

The last MAJOR outage was, as you heard on your side of the lake, was the BIG storm of February 12. That was the day of the storm, where that night the plane crashed as it was approaching the Buffalo airport. We were one of the major towns effected when a tree fell on a transformer pole and knocked it down, thereby knocking out power instantly to about 1500 households in our area. That day all across the state there were upwards of 30,000 households without power. That day, the power went off around 6 am. AND it was freezing. It was off for a good 13 hours, back on for one hour, then back off for a couple more. We dressed in layers. Ended up taking some of the refrig stuff outside onto the porch to keep cold. Put some things in bags and in the snow. YES seriously.

Then there was the October surprise storm of 2006 where some places just nearby lost power for about a week. We were spared that time.

We’ve had power outages around here, mostly a couple of hours or less. Usually we unplug the computers, satelite tv, etc. And just ‘hunker’ down till the storm blows over.

Growing up in another state, we had power outages often. We’d fill the bathtub, extra pails, and jugs with water so we could have water. We lived WAY out in the country, and it often was difficult for the power crews to find the cause.

What to do during the outage: depends on the season. The above mentioned February storm…we crowded into the kitchen dressed in coats, mittens, etc, and hubby boiled water to warm that room a little.

If its summer, we could go outside on the porch, relax. Winter time, its mostly huddling to keep warm.

SOOOO glad that your power outage was short lived. BTW, from experience, chest freezers, without opening them can last about 24 hours. The automatic defrost freezers a little less. Test the ice cream. If its soft, then you’ve got problems.lol. What would we have done 100 years ago, I can’t even imagine. Hope you have a good weekend.

Yea tell me about it. No TV-s, internet, computers, WI-FI. It’s kind a spooky.

In the evening, when it’s dark, I kinda like it.

It happened a few times last winter just before diner time. We took out a cooking set that worked on methanol, placed about 20 candles in the kitchen and had diner without being disturbed by TV, telephone, etc. Was really nice. When you don’t need to get some work done.

As far as PC’s are concerned, the integrated battery is one of the big advantages of a laptop.
