Anyone else having trouble getting food for your dog?

July 5, 2008 by Tricia

The last few months we’ve been having a terrible time getting a steady supply of the two brands of dry dog food that we feed our Labrador Retriever puppy.

The first few months were ok, but by March one of the brands that we were feeding our dog with a sensitive tummy became unavailable for a while. It was Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy Chicken and Rice dog food. I guess the company was having trouble getting one of the ingredients for the dog food and it messed up their whole supply until June.

Luckily we were also feeding her another dog food – Nutro Natures Choice Large Breed puppy Lamb and brown rice dog food. However now whenever we go into get pet supplies we have trouble finding this particular brand.

Chris went to the pet store early this morning specifically to look for the two brands of dry dog food that we feed Midnight and they were out of the Nutro again! A Nutro rep happened to be in the store and she told him that they are having trouble getting a supply of lamb for the food. I guess they get their lamb from New Zealand and there’s been a drought there that’s affect the livestock.

Naturally she suggested that we switch to one of their other products, but as I said earlier our dog has a very sensitive stomach so I really don’t want to start switching her food every time I need to buy her a new bag of food. I said it that way because I suspect that if we switch to one of their other products or even another brand that we’ll run into supply problems again. That seems to be our luck lately.

Are any of you having trouble getting certain brands of food for your dog? Or is it just us having terrible luck picking a company that can keep our dog supplied in healthy food?

I’m sorry to hear about your dog food woes. I guess this is a time to be glad that our kitten is robust and will eat virtually anything. 🙂

We make our dog rice and veggies with some egg and vitamin supplements. She loves this more than the food we purchase from our Vet. However, she only receives this 1x or 2x a week. However, we were also told by our Vet that we can supplement her regular food with Peas or Potatoes as she is very sensitive as well. Hope this helps! 🙂

    Much love, xoxo-pm

I feed my 2 dogs and 3 cats Innova Evo and Wellness Core and haven’t had any problem getting supplies of either. These are 2 highly regarded all natural formulas of kibble with real meat as the first ingredient, and no byproducts, fillers, chemicals, etc. These are grain-free formulas, because my dog Abby has an allergy to grains, which a lot of dogs with stomach upset, skin allergies, ear problems etc actually have I found out. Even though the cats don’t have any allergies, I feed them the grain-free formula because from what I’ve read, cats don’t eat grains in the wild and really shouldn’t have them – it causes digestion problems in them too.
I received a list of the top 9 all natural dog food (kibble) a while back, based on the writer’s investigation of ingredients in many commercial dog food formulas, and he rated the top 9 as far as having the most real meat (not meal or byproduct), no chemicals, etc. Your Blue Buffalo formula was on the Top 9, but not Nutro. Here are the foods he recommended in no particular order- maybe you can find one of these more easily:
    APD Select Choice
    Blue Buffalo Co
    Canidae
    From Family
    Halo Purely for Pets
    Holistic Blend
    Natura Innova
    Newman’s Own Organics
    Wellness

Good luck and I hope your pup’s stomach problems go away.

We have a Border Collie X Lab puppy, and he tends to respond best to a couple “Natural” brands of dry dog food – hates canned dog feed.

We are also able to buy “no name brand” spaghetti very cheap here, and cook this up and mix with a bit of “dog meat” (scraps from the butcher), which he loves. Probably a bit fancy in some respects (we spoil him), but it works out much cheaper than it sounds and isn’t that much work!

I’ve been having back issues for years. It’s no fun. I had back surgery a year and a half ago and I’m still having issues. I’m working at getting better though.

We found that our wirehair fox terrier is allergic to beef, barley & brewers yeast. The only food she can have is WD canine from our vet. She seems to do great on that.
