Give the dog a bone

This weeks theme is Heavy

I should have looked at what the Photo Hunter theme was before I posted that last photo!

We bought our puppy a large beef bone (roasted bone?) about two weeks ago.

We were desperately looking for something that would be safe for her to chew that wouldn’t end up breaking into little pieces quickly. Labs are real chewers and I guess they must have strong jaws and teeth as it seems they can go through just about anything very quickly! The only toys were buy her these days are nylabone – a tough plastic – or ones that are made of very thick heavy rubber.

She loved the bone! You can see here that it’s more than half the length of her body!

I’m not sure how heavy it is (or was) but I’d guess that it was at least 8 lb when we purchased it. There isn’t much missing yet so it’s probably still close to that weight. Our puppy’s last vet visit was at the beginning of January and she’d only just reached 20 lb at that time. I doubt she’s even 30 lb now, so the bone is probably close to a third of her weight. It’s heavy!

She tries to pick it up every once in a while, but she doesn’t get too far! Mostly she just drags it around when she wants to move it. She has however managed to pick it up a few times and get on the couch with it. That’s a wasted effort though as we don’t want her chewing a bone on the couch.

It sure keeps her occupied! Before we got her the bone she was quite the attention hog, but now she’ll noisily chew on her bone for hours at a time. If it weren’t for the grinding grating noise (especially when she’s got the bone on the floor instead of on her doggy bed) it would be almost peaceful around here.

Please visit two of my other blogs that are participating in the Photo Hunt – I’ve got some snow damage to show you at As the Garden Grows and if you want to see just how much snow we’re dealing with here in Toronto visit My World!

Is that a bone or is it not a bone? Great photos for the theme. Your dog has such shiny, healthy fur. Have a great weekend.

Waht a gorgeous pup! I brought 2 black Lab puppies home last year, but after a week my cats made me bring them back. Really, she’s just spectacular!! Of course that bone is too heavy for her, but not for long!

Can I just say I love the red collar against Midnight’s black fur! We used to have a mini dachshund who had a big bone like this…it was a hoot watching him try to move it around the floor! lol!! And now, I’m off to play with the slogan generator thingy…did you really have to post that??? I’ve got a ton of other non-bloggy things I need to do, but now I have to go play with that! gee whiz! lol!~

I’m not a dog person but my daughter is. And I am always fascinated how bones can keep them busy for hours and hours. It sounds boring, doesn’t it?

That heavy bone will give her a lot of enjoyment. That is great for the sake of her health and your sanity.
