Planning a Jamaican Getaway

June 28, 2007 by Tricia

I haven’t had a real vacation in a long time and I think I need one. Everyone deserves to get away every once in a while don’t they?

One of the places that I’ve considered visiting is Jamaica. I’ve been to a few of the Caribbean islands – mostly Dominican Republic because my brother used to live there – but I’d like to be able to say, at some point in my life, that I’ve been to all of the major Caribbean islands.

We have several friends that are from Jamaica and they are always talking about life back home, the foods, the culture, and the attractions that we should see if we ever do go.

I almost feel like I know the island already after talking with or friends about life on the island so much. Even so, when I do begin to plan our Jamaican vacation I’ll be visiting the Jamaica Guide at http://jamaica-guide.info/ so I can plan what we’ll do and see while we’re on vacation.

I know that when we do go to Jamaica that we’ll want to see some of the local arts and entertainment. I love Reggae and Ska and so does Chris and I think it’d be fantastic to listen to this music in the area that it was created. How could anyone go to Jamaica and not want to listen to the local music?

When we do go to Jamaica perhaps we’ll time our vacation so that we’ll be there when our friends make their annual trip home. There’s nothing better than visiting a new area and being shown around by someone that knows the city or country.

Have you been to Jamaica? If you have I’d love to hear what sites I should see when we visit.

Do you ever wonder …

June 28, 2007 by Tricia

When I was making breakfast for my husband I went to pull his bagel out of the toaster oven with my bare hands and of course it was hot so I dropped it.

As I touched the bagel and quickly pulled my hand away I yelped “Hot!”

Do you ever wonder why we yell out what’s happening when we’re shocked when it would be obvious to anyone watching?

Everyone does it.

If someone were to touch you and their hand was freezing cold you’d probably yell out “cold, brrrr!” Right?

But why?

I think it’s weird … normal because we all do it occasionally … but strange too.

Another thing that gets me is when people bump into something and they say sorry. They didn’t bump into a person … no, they bumped into a chair, or a wall and they still say sorry. I don’t know, maybe that’s a Canadian thing … but it’s funny as hell!

I’m not saying that I don’t say sorry to walls. I’m pretty sure I do, but why?

What other strange things can you think of that people do for no good reason when it’s obvious what happened?

Entertaining friends at home with a friendly game of pool

June 27, 2007 by Tricia

When my husband and I used to live in our apartment we lived in a very active area of Toronto. We were within walking distance of night clubs, fantastic restaurants, small retail stores that sold everything from gift items to beautiful antiques, and a no less than four bars that had pool tables.

If we weren’t out with friends, our friends were at our house often enjoying one of my gourmet dinners. We enjoyed entertaining. We still do but we do less entertaining lately.

Now, I’m not a very good pool player. I believe it has something to do with me being left handed, but I could be wrong about that, I just might be bad at it. Still, I enjoy playing, and I enjoy watching my husband play. He’s very good.

When we lived in the apartment we’d go to one of the bars that had pool tables approximately once a week. We’d walk over with a couple of friends, have a few drinks and play a few games. It was fun and I have good memories of those times.

There is a pool hall and a really nice bar with pool tables within walking distance of our house, but I’d say we only go out to play pool once a month or less these days.

As I’ve said before Chris and I are in the process of renovating our home. One of the areas up for renovating is our basement. It’s not finished at all. We’d like to make the basement into a rec room or den which may or may not contain a bedroom.

When we’ve talked about what we want out of the basement when it’s finished one of the things that’s come up a few times is my husbands desire to have a pool table. He wants to be able to play darts too but the ceiling is so low it’s dangerous! I think a pool table would be fine down there though. Our friends would certainly enjoy it if we had a pool table since our home is still considered an entertainment hub amongst our friends.

I’m discussing pool tables right now because I’ve just visited BostonTables.com and they have a lovely selection of well made pool tables. Take a look at this beautiful model:

Boston Tables specializes in Pool Tables, Game Tables and accessories. They are actually a national company that operates in multiple States. They ship throughout all of the United States via their Columbus Ohio distribution center.

If you’ve ever considered getting a pool table for your home it might be a good idea to take a look at their selection right now as they are having a sale. Almost all of the pool tables that are shown on the page that I linked to earlier are priced under $2000.

If Chris and I were to get a pool table I’d certainly want one of a similar design as the image above. Isn’t that gorgeous? I love the shape of the legs and the beautiful wood that’s been used. It would actually suit the style of our 1927 house and the way I’ve furnished some of the rooms.

It’s too bad that we don’t already have a pool table. One of our old friends will be staying with us this weekend and some of the best times I’ve had with this guy have been while playing pool with him. He’s quite the character.

Actually we’re going to have guests all summer long. Chris’ brother and one of his boys are coming from Chicago the in a week, and in early August his other two children will be coming to stay with us for a couple of weeks.

Now wouldn’t it be great to have a pool table to entertain our guests?

It’s certainly something fun to do, and staying in rather than going out to bars to play pool would save some money too. Actually come to think of it, with the money that you could save by going out less often and entertaining at home instead the pool table would practically pay for itself in no time.

Hmmm the idea sounds more and more appealing doesn’t it?

My Comment Policy

June 27, 2007 by Tricia

In an earlier post I discussed the fact that all of our blogs, my own and my husbands, are do follow blogs. This means that you’ll get a real link when you leave a comment.

I’m doing this because I’d like to build up my readership and give a little something back to those who leave comments regularly.

Each comment takes a tiny piece of my sites Page Rank with it though so I appreciate getting decent comments. Comments that look spammy or look like someone is just advertising their own sites or products are not appreciated.

By decent comment, I mean that if you are taking the time to reply to a post on any blog please don’t say “nice post” or “Nice blog” or “Nice picture” or “Funny ha ha”. Yes, sometimes comments like this are real, but most of the time when someone leaves such a short comment they are just commenting for the sake of commenting.

Since I’m giving away free links- each one taking a tiny bit of my sites PR with it – please don’t make me regret my gift to you. I can tell when people are following the do follow blogroll or other do follow lists that are out there because these people will hit all my sites and leave similar comments on each one.

Write a comment that adds to the post. Did it touch you in some way? Do you have a similar experience to share? Have you used the site or product that I’m discussing in my post? If so what are you thoughts on it? If you haven’t used it does it sound like something worth trying?

If you really don’t have anything to say about a post don’t feel that you have to comment for the sake of commenting. Everyone loves getting comments but I enjoy getting comments that are little more than “Hey there, nice blog, come and visit mine.”. I bet you do too.

If you leave extra links in your comment do they really relate to the post or are you advertising something?

I’ve taken to removing extra links if I don’t feel that they contribute to the post or that the person is taking advantage of my dofollow policy.

I’ve also deleted comments that do not add to the conversation.

This may sound harsh, but if I feel that someone is abusing my blog to get backlinks why should I allow it. Would you?

Real Estate as an investment

June 27, 2007 by Tricia

Almost all my life I’ve heard people talk about real estate as being an investment. Some thought of it as a personal investment, while others were interested in real estate as a business related investment. It just depended upon who I was talking to and what year it was, as to which form of real estate investment I heard discussed most often.

When I worked in the jewelery trade, with people that had money to invest, real estate was discussed as a way to earn extra income. Whether it was to be in the form of purchasing houses or condos as rental properties, or because of the real estates location.

For me, investing in real estate is personal. I took the steps to purchase a house because I knew I would own something that would grown in value with time. I also invested in property because I wanted to have more space and the freedom to do what I wanted, rather than living by someone else’s rules.

I lived in an apartment for over a decade before we purchased our house. All that time I was paying rent for a space I’d never own. A property that I’d never have a say in how it was run or managed.

If you’ve been considering purchasing a house or condo you might want to use this site to compare mortgage rates. I think it’s always a good idea to find out how much you’ll be able to afford to pay for a mortgage each month and what the current rates are before you start looking for a property.

If I were going to invest in another property I’d likely buy in an area that I’d want to vacation in and one that might also be popular for others to vacation in so that I could rent the property out whenever I didn’t want to use it.

I’m not sure where I’d look for such a property at this time, but I keep hearing about Ashevile Real Estate, and how Asheville is a growing community in the Blue Ridge Mountains area, so I suppose that that might be a great are to look into as far as real estate investing goes.

Have you invested in real estate? If so, was it for personal use, or a business related purchase?
